Stamkos almost doubled his peak assist total as a 32 year old coming off multiple serious injuries, did he suddenly learn how to playmake after over a decade in the league or is it maybe driven largely by where the coach puts you on the transition and PP?
He improved significantly as a playmaker with more offensive tools around him and his goal scoring having been reduced after his major injury in 2014ish
You were previously pretending that panarin and tavares gap was usage and PP role. It is not simply where a coach puts you, you have to be able to create and balance being a shooting and passing threat to be a very dangerous and valuable offensive player.
Stamkos playmaking took off from 2016.
2008 - 2015 (peak goal scoring window for him)
492 games, 276 G and 222A for 498 pts. 46G + 37A per 82. Very good in low scoring league window (2008-2017)
2016 - 2024 (when he became a dual offensive threat) 590 games, 279G & 360A for 639 pts. 39G + 50A per 82.
Similar jump in playoffs as from 2011-2016 he had 35 pts in 49 games good for 59 per 82
While 2017-2024 he had 66 in 79 good for 69 per 82.
His ability to playmake and facilitate made him somewhat valuable in the playoffs as his goalscoring fell off hard routinely pre and post injury.
Elite playmakers can break the game down and be able to open lanes and find seams for their teammates.
Matthews pass on the PP yesterday was an elite look he got through. Usually he holds on too long, skates out of a nice cross seam position or doesnt drag a defender towards him to create a clean look for nylander or sometimes marner.
Play making requires patience and ability to chance pace to confuse a defense. Along with great passing precision and often elite hands.
Goal scoring requires precision and ability to postion your body to beat set or moving goalies. Along with great shooting aim and power
Playmakers usually win most of the major awards (hart, lindsay, ross, smythe) while goal scorers usually win the rocket alone
2008-2010 OV was one of the rare exceptions where an elite goal scorer was also a strong enough play maker to contend and be 1st in ppg for 3 years in a row.
