It's actually quite simple, we will feel a crunch for one year while Tavares is still making 11 million. Then, when he's up we have Matthews/Marner/Nylander being the guys making 10+

Leafs also have a good amount of young forwards coming up now too which will help mitigate the impact felt by Nylander's deal. Knies, Robertson, Minten, Cowan all look like they are and will be making contributions on ELCs
I agree with you. But you won’t win with that much salary up front. You need to spread it out to D and G.

But please don’t listen to me !!

I think it's possible, but it needs to be the right group of guys up front. The Leafs haven't lost due to defense for a few years now, it's usually been a lack of offense

I did too, until he had the puck in the O-zone for a scoring chance in OT and just gave the puck away to avoid a Gudas hit.

He's just like Matthews and Marner
Horsesh*t. Nylander is a super player.

And that's why the Leafs can't succeed in the playoffs. When you let this lazy floater refuse to break a sweat in his own zone, how can you hold the rest of the team accountable? He's setting the standard and it's simply not acceptable for an NHLer. You don't succeed as a team when your best players don't care about winning.
This comment seems to be inaccurate and horsesh*t.

I always knew Nylander was a star, put up very impressive numbers throughout his career.

But this season I truly believe that Nylander has taken another step, not just offensively, but defensively as well.

25 points and 16 games is extremely impressive on top of it.

He seems pretty special, and a lot of people might think this is a hot take( or not) but I believe this year he has been the best Toronto Maple Leaf, going toe to toe with Matthews as the best player on the team, And truly reached superstar status for the first time in his career.

He's a superstar in Canada. But is that a little like saying someone is "world famous in Poland"?

Stop making threads based on TSN topics.

When labeling hockey players with such as semistar, star, superstar, franchise players etc, it is of course within the sphere the said players plays, in this case NHL. I thought that was consensus around here.

All semantics of course but to me he is a star and not a superstar, the latter is also above franchise player in my world. Or putting it differently all superstars are franchise players but only some stars.

If Nylander leaves the Leafs in the off season, it'll because he wants to. It won't be because the Leafs can't afford him.

No team in the NHL values cap space more than a ~100 point guy. They value it more than guys that put up 30 goals and ~60 points or less.

The Leafs will murder hobos in order to create cap space for Nylander if needed and not only will it be approved by the general population, the Ontario Government will probably adopt it as a solution to homelessness.

"Ah shit, one of our players scored 104 points, 50 goals and finished top 5 in scoring in the league. Guess we're gonna let him walk because we need that cap space to sign worse players." - No GM ever.

A career year as his contract is expiring. A tale as old as time. I pity the team that gives him Matthews type money.

This isn't a contract year out of nowhere though. Hes been improving each season.

It’s such a f***ing stupid narrative

Even if it’s a contract year…what’s the point. He looks like arguably the best player in the league right now.

I guess any shlub can flip a switch and be the best player in the world if they want to… as long as it’s a ‘contract year’

Hope it isn’t the case but in the back of my mind I just keep thinking “contract year”.

I could easily see him sliding back next year after the cash in.

If Nylander has the value that HF thinks he does the Leafs should seriously consider trading him

Meier got 2 1st's last year. What does Nylander get? 4 1sts?

You could say that. You could also say that this is his third straight season trending upwards. Maybe it just took him longer than the other guys to really find his game?
The only difference I see in him this year is more consistent effort. He didn’t magically get better at hockey over the summer.
