I don’t think it’s very important, I think the NHL has become an obsession with cap over hockey.

I’ve learned to just ignore the cap, the league will never allow an NHL team to be over the cap, whatever shenanigans needs to happen, will happen.

I do think the NHL will be massively inequitable in the near future unless the NHL fixes their cap. Meaning the stars will make more than 10x as much as the rest of the league. Mid-level contracts will disappear, and the very few will make 50-60% of the cap while the rest make peanuts in comparison.

I’ve just learned to ignore the cap and enjoy the talent
Amen to that.
My buddies and I agrree with your line of thinking. When talking hockey and the NHLs chase for the cup.
If somebody brings up the "cap implications " ....we jokingly get told to go play fantasy gm with Friedman

He will start mailing it in next season. This year's 100+ points to next year's 75, then a perennial 50 point player. It's in his genes. He plays for money. And there's nothing wrong with that, of course. Leafs will look like geniuses if they trade him.
Like father, like son.

Always knew money was his biggest motivator, not surprised this is happening in a contract year. Can the Leafs afford to keep him?
Yeah, that definitely explains why he's been probably a top 5 bang-for-buck player the previous two seasons leading into this one.

As much as I'd love to have Nylander on the Wings (should he make it to FA)... it's hard to not be leery of a guy having a monster year at the end of a contract. FA is generally the last place you want to be getting key pieces because it's always going to be at top dollar.

Player turning up their level of play in a contract year. Yes it's never happened in the NHL before.
I'd love to see how many career best seasons have happened in a contract year vs non contract year. I bet it's wildly in favour of non contract year. Players can't just up and decided to play like a top 10 player when they feel like it.

Also, how does anyone explain back-to-back 80+ point season from Willy while making only 6.9 million? Not like this came out of no where. He's been trending upwards for years.

Haters always going to hate.

People need to realize he's 27 (around the age where most guys hit their peak) and has increase his offensive totals the last two years. Went from a. 60 point player, to 81 points to 87. So what he's done this year is just natural progression, especially for a bluechip talent.

As much as I'd love to have Nylander on the Wings (should he make it to FA)... it's hard to not be leery of a guy having a monster year at the end of a contract. FA is generally the last place you want to be getting key pieces because it's always going to be at top dollar.

You're not wrong, but he's steadily increase his point totals the last couple years.

Leafs have plenty of money over the next few years, and unlike before, the cap will actually be rising.

Just don't hope for another pandemic.

Time to replace Superstar by Supernova or Hypernova* status

*Scientists think a hypernova occurs when stars more than 30 times the mass of the Sun quickly collapse into a black hole. The resulting explosion is 10 to 100 times more powerful than a supernova
