I'm just worried he gets his superstar money and reverts back to being a really good player for the next 6-8 years. I hate that he's taken this leap in a contract year, many before him have done it and reverted.

He can float as much as he wants if he puts up these kind of numbers.
And that's why the Leafs can't succeed in the playoffs. When you let this lazy floater refuse to break a sweat in his own zone, how can you hold the rest of the team accountable? He's setting the standard and it's simply not acceptable for an NHLer. You don't succeed as a team when your best players don't care about winning.

We cant afford him so relax. He's gonna be somebody else's overpaid problem.

He's been much better than Matthews both last season and this season, and since Matthews makes 13.25mil and Nylander got lowballed on his last contract, I expect Nylander will want 14mil+.

Matthews is a 60 goal scorer. Nylander wont make more than him.

I wouldn't call him a superstar yet. Is he playing like one right now? Absolutely, but I want to see it for longer than just a stretch of 15 games.

I agree that Nylander will have some off years under his new contract. Most likely the first year. Like is 7 goals in 54 games run.

But Nylander has 31 , 34 and 40 goal campaigns under is belt. Nylander is a true top line scorer. Horvat is a 2nd line player on an average team. And even that he doesn't do very well because he isn't a checker. The Horvat deal is special bad.

& he got paid 8M.

What if Nylander gets paid in the 11M range?

I don't think the Leafs are going to give him 11. But they do need to go to double digits that's for sure.

Superstar is a grading of player level. Not level of celebrity.
Yeah but the best handful of players in the NHL are well known. McDavid, Matthews, MacK. They put butts in seats and help close revenue deals. Nylander just isn’t that guy, despite being a very good player.

The leafs best players really don’t put winning first, and that should be obvious. Here’s the order of importance for many NHL ‘superstars’

Give me my money $$$
Give me my minutes so I can get my stats
I’d like to be on a winning team

How often does a superstar hit free agency? They'll go over the cap in the summer before they let him walk, I just hope it's worth it.
Marner has a NMC. And Matthews is signed. JT we can't do nothing with until hes done. And Willy has priced himself out of Toronto.

It's over. We either use him as a rental and get nothing for him after another lack luster playoff performance or we trade him for pieces somewhere along the season.

But unless Willy comes in at a reasonable ask. 9. Which he won't. He's gone.

Keep him as a rental. He’s going to be a Kadri 2.0, everyone knows it and so his value on the market is only as a rental

Yes he’s the best player on the team and they should give him the biggest contract too, please give him the biggest contract
he should prob get what he wants here in Toronto or on the open market. actually likely more on the open market. I think he wants to stay here but he's going to get what he he deserves.

I would love to keep him but not sure its possible unless MLSE makes a tough decision and finds a way to either convince Tavares to accept a trade then finding the team interested. or moving Marner.

chances are Nylander is done in Toronto after this season
