Heard he got benched, and I'm sure he deserved it (he's kind of a lazy player after all but with a ton of skill) so I wanted to see how he did tonight. From the looks of it, he constantly got the puck into the O-zone, cycled and created a few chances, while the top-line consisting of yours gods, did squat. Matthews been great so far and can't be good every game ofc, but I was listening to Ray Ferraro (ugh, hes hard to listen to), and whenever Nylander did something good it didnt get a mention, but as soon as he lost a puck you got to hear it a few seconds later. Ray NEVER, at least in the 2 periods I watched, said anything about either Matthews or Marner, or JT for that matter, but they were completley awful this game. For example, in the 5vs3 PP, Nylander got shit on when the Leafs didn't create anything, but not Marner or Matthews that had the puck 24/7. In the scenes before the PP, when Toronto got their PP's, he implied that the Flames player was not happy with the penalty that was called on him when he tripped Nylander, "not happy at all, weak penalty", but when Marner went down for no reason by the boards, and Lindholm was even more infuriated than the other Flame, he said squat. Don't you people recognize this?

It's quite clear that the media have decided who to blame, and that seems to always be the case in your city and with your journalists.

It's easy to look at Nylanders game and see flaws, but I had hoped that more people following teams etc had better knowledge than letting play-by-players or experts color their judgement like they do in Toronto.

Lots of NHLers can cycle the puck. He has 1 goal in the past 10 games (a pile on goal in a blowout). He is supposed to be the secondary scoring to support the 1st line. He hasn’t done squat to help. Time to move on from him.

Stopped reading after, Ferraro is hard to listen to.

For all you "either/or" types: Nylander and Tavares have BOTH been sucking a little. You can have more than one sucker at a time!

Funny you mention Lindholm.

Now that's a player.

Talented offensively, responsible defensively, all situations centre-wing...

Nylander is far from being that type of player and it has nothing to do with talent, it's simply will-power.

Why are people mentioning Tavares in a Nylander thread? Go talk about Tavares in the Tavares thread! Nylander is struggling, but it doesn't make him any better when you mention that Vesey is struggling as well.

You don't even watch him every game yet you come in here and tell us we're all brainwashed by the media. Quality post.

Sure, but there's not that many players better than him at getting the puck into the zone with possesion, leading to said cycle. And why are you giving him shit for scoring "garbage goals"? I remember Leaf fans being angry that he DIDN'T score those goals before?

I do think Nylander is the odd man out, if any, on that roster. Think he could be used better elsewhere.

Ofc I dont watch every game, but longer highlights are available, and I've seen at least 5-10 of them. Are you saying that Ferraro didn't pick Nylander out yesterday?

No, I don't. All I see is Nylander losing the puck, being weak on the forecheck, not getting to the dirty areas in front of the net like last year and generally sucking just like Tavares. Those two are a big reason this team didn't win last night. Can't expect Matthews and Marner to do everything every night.

For the record, I don't dislike any player nor do I care what Ferraro thinks and the vast majority of Leafs fans on this board don't base their opinions on commentators either. We can see with our own eyes.

Fair enough!

Nylander was probably the Leafs best player last night on the ice. Puck retrieval and speed with the puck was above everyone on the team. Anytime he was on the ice, which was alot. Something was happening offensively. Chances happened.

Although Matthews and Marner have been crazy good. They took a back seat to Willy last night.

Willy needs to learn to take a man on the backcheck instead of just skating around with no purpose.

Willy looked like he had his legs last night, Only complaint was his play on th PP when, as Ferraro pointed out, he had time to take the puck to the front of the net but chose to go in a diferent direction. Many thought he could replace Simmonds' role in front of the net on the PP but he is not that guy.

He was better from the very beginning of the game. Tendencies to remain in his comfort zone was specifically qualified when the season started. Keefe asked everyone to play better defensively and maybe do things differently and come out of the comfort zone to be tougher to play against as a team. Nylander for me has done nothing differently except look even more indifferent.

I’m incapable of finding any positives in expecting better from him. He actually has become less of a fit with a improved defensive team. He has to be traded and he has great value. I’m not sure Management completely knows what they want in return as a need.

Nylander is not a fit going forward. The sooner he gets us a return we can use the better.

Agreed. Nylander cant form chemistry with anyone, super talented, soft, terrible compete level and bad body language, awkward interviews talking about the team....sounds like Phil Kessel.

Typical week for Nylander and the anxiety he gives his linemates despite his talent.

Monday, Nylander shows up, competes hard. Uses his strengths to carry the puck, use his puck protection in the offensive zone, use his shot, be a speedy playmaker at the root.

Wednesday, Nylander looks hungover, no effort, doesnt want the puck, slumped over skating, flyby's, etc.

Friday, Nylander is similar to Monday but more of a puck hog, looking off his linemates, resetting the play to the defense, looks interested in skating with the puck by himself but doesnt want that to turn into a scoring chance. Seems in his own world.

Rinse Repeat every week of the season. They will never say it in the media but Matthews and Tavares HATE playing with William Nylander.

No intensity and the optics of his body language likely is less important to me than his sample size on the whole to this point. I don’t care what Dubas said about not trading him. Let that be a lesson to him to never make a statement like that in the future. Nylander needs to be traded
