gotta email keefe and showcase your displeasure for keefe benching nylander in a game against the habs.

clearly keefe needs to up is coaching/60

:sarcasm:

Its not an either or issue.

Nylander deserved that benching. But that doesn't change the fact his play on the wider sample of the season so far has been pretty good, mixed with a few lackluster games.

Nylander isn't the only Leafs to have had a bench worthy game this season. Guys Like Rielly and Tavares have also had bench worthy nights but guys like that will never see the bench due to position/status.

I liked Nylanders game earlier that game but then it really fell off. Consistency is the biggest thing with Nylander. If he can be a consistently great player than he can be a superstar in the league. He has the tools to do it.

The problem is that "bad games" for Rielly and Tavares are typically things like poor decisions, bad giveaways, bad positioning, etc. Benching somebody for trying their best but making mistakes doesn't exactly put them in a good head space and improve their play. Would actually often accomplish the opposite.

But for Nylander, it's lack of effort and laziness. Look at that gif posted in this thread, prior to Nylanders benching. For players like that, benching is a good wake-up call.

This is a good point. Marner has been a lot more consistent this season, but the funny thing is Marner's struggles were a lot worse then Nylander's are right now. The difference is Marner was given every kind of excuse, while Nylander gets brought down for every mistake. Marner's effort level was attrocius.

If there's one set of words I would never expect to see next to Mitch Marner, it's "effort level was atrocious". Even when he's not producing, Marner is still TRYING... Now, you can argue that his trying is counterproductive, but not trying?

OTOH, I still see periods where it looks a whole lot like William Nylander just doesn't care about anything but scoring. And yeah, his annoying tendency to react to losing the puck by going for a change is starting to grate. Reminds me of Game 6 of the second series against Boston a few years ago...

Point is, there is a bias in which these players are viewed. Nylander much like Marner will bounce back.

I know you think that but it isnt true just like Berkshire was wrong when he called Marner over-rated more than a year ago and said Timo Meier was more productive.

He can’t even spell atrocious, so...

isn't he just trying to cover the point here?
When he commits to the player down low he gets in trouble for leaving point open. As soon as Nylander charges him, Drouin is sending that to the point.

Not sure why Drouin has so much space curling out anyways. Seems like a team issue. Not a Nylander issue.

I shook my head when Nylander passed to Toffoli and had to do a panic back check and then got dangled. That was pretty bad. Definitely deserves some roasting for that.

But then Mik and Engvall put up brutal turn overs in our own zone not even 30 seconds later.

Of course the 3rd liners get to keep playing while Nylander sits on the bench. Good luck with that against real teams Keefe.

Tavares has been crap and the line as a whole is running dump and chase instead of letting Nylander run it like last year. Singling out Nylander so hard is bullshit especially when we're 14-3-2 and can keep stuff like this private right now instead of giving the media food to play with.

Tavares has been coughing it up every game during his slump but because it looks like he skates hard he's allowed to lol. What a jokeeeee

I didn't remember this but at first I thought he was forechecking, then it shows that he's in the d-zone. Wow, that is bad. Lazy and dumb, that's not how anyone should play hockey.
Was this the play (or non-play...) that prompted Keefe to bench him?

If so, that would be completely justified.
Agreed, a disgusting play that isn't the first time he's been egregiously lazy and easy to play against. It's why I can't stand Nylander. Of course he's supremely gifted offensively, when he wants to show it, but to me it's not at all worth his salary or his poor influence/impact on this team. At least Marner shows some defensive effort.

Not sure who I heard it from this morning but Keefe has been hard on Nylander since their Marlie days. JT has been a turnover machine but he does not need a kick in the ass to put in the effort.

Agreed and why I would move him. Many say he has a great contract. Sure if he put up 3 years like last year. So far it is year 1; shit the bed after being made whole; year two -excellent; year 3; shitting the bed

Nylander will get hot any minute now and it'll all be forgotten. It's odd the media spent time today speculating on a Nylander trade. They are not moving him because of this.

He son pace for 60 points (less goals but more primary assists vs the previous year) and his line is on the ice for considerably less goals against than the previous season.

Maybe this is an exaggeration on your part?

Friedge has some interesting takes on Nylander tonight after 4 pm on Fan590. Could not find the clip but he said something to the effect that Leafs are going all in and they need to know if Willie is with them (not his exact words so do not quote me on it).

Certainly not as bad as he was after he signed, but you cannot tell me he has been as good as he was last year. Yup he is on a 60 point pace but if he keeps playing as he has, he will not keep up that pace. Personally I would like to see him step up and drag Tavares and help him get out of his slump but he keep leaves his fans wanting.
Let's see what he does tonight with the team missing a few key players.

Skill without will. He reminds me so much of Kovalev. Kovalev was even better player when he tried, but their attitude to the game is the same. 70% of the time they don't even bother to try. 30% of time they try and are beast.

If he was rookie you could teach him to better ways, but he 25...

Obviously not. He is the obvious player to move though if they decide to make a move.
