So don't address our d situation? Have you been paying attention for the last decade and change?

Or you gonna use Kappy and AJ to get us the D man we need? Cause that won't do it.

Our defense is fine after Muzzin comes back, even with Rielly out. The only upgrade I would look at is on Ceci and a backup goalie. That's not expensive to find.

Muzzin - Holl
Dermott - Barrie
Sandin - xxx (I.e Kevin Miller type)

You are in dreamland. Muzz and Holl are a 2nd line pair I give you that one. No 1st line defense and 3rd pair is wet behind the ears. Very very hard to win with that group.

I like Muzzin. It'll be interesting to see if we can get him resigned. Ceci might get picked up for depth I guess but his value is pretty limited imo as a trade chip. I like Holl. But the dude has what? 50 games in the NHL and we have him 1st pairing? You wouldn't try to move Barrie at the deadline?

Yeah I think even if Ceci can be our 7th D that'd be fine, if we can squeeze it in somehow.

Justin Holl will have 95 NHL games under his belt by the time the playoffs start (6o so far).

In comparison, Charlie McAvoy on Boston Bruins had only 63 NHL games when he played 1st pairing minutes in the playoffs. His pairing with Chara was great, a true experienced vet. Similarily, Holl is paired with Muzzin, a true experienced vet.

Muzzin-Holl are the ideal shutdown pairing, not a 2nd pair. They were amazing in their shutdown minutes together this season. Even with a healthy lineup, I have those two ahead of Rielly-Barrie.

If you don't think Muzzin-Holl are a good shutdown pairing, then Boston is screwed with their Chara-McAvoy pairing

If we're thinking about playoffs, then Rielly will be healthy. Let's give it a comparison:

Muzzin - Holl = Chara - McAvoy
Rielly - Barrie > Krug - Carlo
Sandin - Dermott* = Gryzelck - Moore

Truth be told we have to pull the trigger for someone at the deadline. I'm still very curious about what they're going to do next year about the defense, all this talk about 4 inexperienced D-men being permanent fixtures next year doesn't sound good. Would make sense to line up your solution right now while Rielly is injured.

Chara is a pretty big variable there :p

Yeah LOL, I wish we had someone massive like Chara but oh well :( . But either way, I've valued Muzzin more than Chara in recent years (Chara is still great though, and will still be going strong in the playoffs this year at 43 years old holy).

Even though both got recognized highly among the league, I still think to this day that they were underrated during their peak years. It's insane that Chara only won 1 Norris trophy IMO (deserved more), but it makes sense considering Lidstrom was dominating at the same time. I also found Muzzin underrated as well. He was the 'analytical darling' that those analytics people found super underrated and just as impactful as Doughty during their deep playoff years.

Beauty goal Saturday, great shot.
His recent play has moved him past Tavares for me as far as performance goes but he still has a ways to go to catch Matthews and Marner.
I'd still slot him behind Tavares when you consider his overall value to the team though.

Lets hope he keeps it up. No reason to expect that he won't.

Holl has been amazing this season and he deserves to play shutdown minutes as long as he keeps it up. I don’t care how many games played you have, if you can play, you should play.

Can you imagine where they would be without Matthews, Tavares, Marner and Nylander.

Without those players TO would be the perfect team for Babs to coach. The NYI have 4 more points than TO, their top scorer has 40 points which is less than those 4 Leaf players and the Islanders have a game in hand.

During the 2016 season when Toronto finished last place overall that was basically the team Babcock had, if you ignore the 22 games Nylander played when he was called up.

Very true and Babs had that team nipping at the playoffs, only 4 points out at Xmas then magically JVR got injured for far longer than his injury warranted, Kadri was suspended, TO tanked deliberately by design, P.A. Parenteau and the boys probably would've made the playoffs.

The Leafs were never that close to making the playoffs that season. You must be thinking of a few years earlier when they were in contention around Christmas and completely went into a long losing streak. I believe that was the 2014-2015 season and around the time Randy Carlyle got fired. I remember because I was on vacation and it started with a loss to Carolina and than Philadelphia.

I remember distinctly TO being that close, I, all of us thought it was a year TO should tank and we were wondering why would TO bring in such a well regarded coach who might and almost did screw things up.

I think you're talking about the 18 wheeler year, RC was canned even tho TO was actually in a playoff spot when he was canned.

I remember that Toronto was in a playoff position when Carlyle got fired, however that's when their losing streak started before Christmas which I previously mentioned.

Also and this is easy to say with hindsight if Toronto had started losing even earlier that season maybe they finish behind Edmonton in the standings, have their spot in the draft lottery and they get Connor McDavid. Toronto finished with 68 points and Edmonton finished with 62 points.

TO fired RC because they could see the team was going downhill, they fired him because they thought that might enable them to make the playoffs, that wasn't ever viewed as a tankable year.

In order to be worse than Edmonton TO would've needed to remove players like Kessel and Phanny from the team even tho they had just signed that year.

If Toronto was still serious about making the playoffs in 2015 they wouldn't have named Peter Horachek as interim head coach.
