Remember when Tanking meant picking up big talents on ELCs and taking advantage of an artificially low cap hit?

Slafkvosky is so special, and such a unicorn, that we’ve basically forced to accept the inverse. “Sure, it seems likely to continue coasting and generally being disengaged for years to come — he’s tall, you can’t expect a tall player to play hockey like players slightly shorter than them —but I bet you by the end of his eight year contract he will probably be worth his salary!”

Poor kid is only in his third NHL season. He’s practically a fawn. A baby. He has no bearings, no help, nothing. We need to rally together and never, ever expect him to play like a good hockey player. That’s just cruel + bad fans expect such things.

He's quite an enigma. After playing miserable for first 1.5 seasons, he looked like a real deal. A genuine power forward talent in full bloom. Suddenly he's reverted back to old bad habits. What we saw and what he was paid for does not justify a return to the former goals, where it was nice if he ends up as a 45 point version of Josh Anderson.

It is proven that he can be a very good hockey player with a potential to become great. But why is there such a huge gap between his performance levels and what causes it?

It was clear from day 1 at camp he had a low hockey IQ, people laughed at me that he needed time in the OHL and AHL.

no one sees Slaf as a no1 OA, 45 pts for a guy his size is terrible imo, specially at 8 mil a year.

but maybe with Demidov he will learn a thing or 2 about hockey and get better

He got his money; now he can retire while still working and cripple the team.

I don't think he is that type. He is his own worse critic. Gorton talked about that yesterday.

I cringe when fans evaluate young players on points only. Points come and go and we are clearly managing his development in a way where we create a competitor.

One of the things I might recommend is a shorter stick on the PP. He's a big boy and has a big reach and I find the puck is far away from his body and he gets jammed by the opposing teams stick a lot when he shoots. His time is less because his stick is long and when he brings it close to his body, it's awkward and limits him. He has to look down and takes away from his overall vision. I think his long reach works 5/5 but I'd try something a little shorter on the PP and see what results come from it.

He improved. He's on sensational 1.33 shots per game.
And with his shooting% of approx 12 it gives him an estimated nr of goals of around 13 for the season. That is a serious issue.

He needs to shoot more but at the same time have more dangerous shots either by shooting better or by shooting from spots that have a higher chance for scoring. Its like an oxymoron.

Honestly this is exactly what I expected with Slaf. People need to understand this is the type of player he is. He will be a 50 pts player.
I've said it even before the draft (if we exclude Wright, my assessment of the draft was pretty spot on.

42 in 47 is a generous interpretation of PPG.

I’m happy I’m going to war these playoffs with Slaf and not a stringy whippet that would downsize our already small club.
God, imagine if Slaf had 42 in 47? The statue would be up already.

I see the usual suspects are back to posting their usual idiocies.

Was one game all it took ? He was playing well in the previous games.
He isn't scoring as much as we'd all like, but he's playing very well of late. Winning puck battles, making great passes.

Hopefully the scoring will come, but he's still on a 47 point pace. It isn't ideal by any stretch but he's doing a lot of things right.

Absolutely. One’s a power forward… For me to be gushing over a lightweight center, the goal production at his age would need to be closer to Matthews’ (2nd in the NHL) than where Cooley’s actually is (85th in the NHL).

Slafkovsky is not a power forward. He’s a powerful forward, but he doesn’t play the body and it doesn’t come to him as a natural extension of his game.

Part of the strangeness with Slafkovsky is that nobody seems to define his game the same way as the next person. He’s not a Rantanen or Tom Wilson or Chris Kreider. Stylistically the Jagr comps were more close to the mark: powerful (heavy) forward, a playmaker… not powerforward.

Was one game all it took ? He was playing well in the previous games.
Slafkvosky should stop criticizing himself and his game, in your opinion?

Wow the detractors sure are getting bolder in here.

Can't wait for all of you to be proven wrong. Slaf silenced you last year. He will do it again.
Including Slaf, what a hater he is saying when he’s not in motion he sucks.

This kid will get xp and be a very useful player, his tools and size are too good. He’s a huge read-and-react player, and it’s ok. That’s what a winger usually is. He seems engaged, he just looks lost when he’s trying to be Suzuki. Be Slaf, Slaf lol.
