Ask any random person on the street to name a hockey player; i'm betting 8/10 will say Gretzky. The guy hasnt played for 23 years.

I'm thinking his legacy is and will be fine.

Ovechkin has earned the benefit of the doubt to go through an entire season like this before we can draw any real conclusions about how he’ll play from here on out.

I’m not even sure how bad “this” even is realistically.

Seriously it's not like he is getting any younger.

His start to last season was a mirage and he is aging naturally and at 37 he just really isn't that good of a player anymore and his production versus his usage is downright embarrassing but his contract and status as an icon demands that he will get the usage that he really doesn't deserve if people are being honest about it.

I saw the same situation with the Canucks only this usage is ridiculously sheltered.

4 goals in 9 games is good, no?

Bwahaha scored 50 goals and 90 points last year and was the best player in the world for the first half of last season.

Typical Crosby fan trying to rewrite history.

Will Ovi breaking Gretzky's goal scoring record change or influence his legacy?

Let's say if:
1) Ovi retires immediately & finish his goals total with 780
2) Ovi plays his remaining 4 seasons scoring at least 115 goals breaking Gretzky's record. And retires with 900+ goals.

Will breaking goal scoring record & finishing with 900 goals will change his legacy?

I don't get the question.

What do you mean change his legacy.. what's his legacy right now?

Like, yes it will change his legacy?

Or no, it won't change his legacy?

Either way, it's yes or no.

Is it just a yes or no question?

Lol. I don't get it

I already consider Ovechkin the best goal scorer ever, and him breaking the record wouldn't in any way reduce how I view Gretzky, so imo the answer is "no".

Only thing Ovenchicken breaking Gretzkys record would be, that no one would be calling him anything but Alexander the Great. Just one goal short will leave people liking Lemieux as the best.

Ovechkin is the best already and it doesn't matter if he breaks it. He will be the best for at least 50 years. Maybe longer. He is that good.

Not really given his usage and the big hit the capitals take on the ice when he is out there.

He might get 40 goals this year and still be a horrible player given his TOI, usage and sheltered MPG.
Well I agree he's gonna get all the "junk" goals the Caps can give him.

He scored more goals than 99% of all NHL players and led the Hart race for the first half of the season. What are you talking about?

Who cares what he did last season? This is about him now, and how he does moving forward. He's simply not going to continue to do what he did last season, or any season before that.

The poster i was replying to was talking about last season.

Will Ovi decline with age? Yes.

But you should probably have a look at his goal and point totals for this season.

He's essentially a PP/EN specialist at this point in time. 75% of his goals so far this season either on the PP or in the empty net. Also 4 of the points against Canucks horrid defense. I saw the Caps up 2-0 yesterday against NSH with 3 minutes to go, on the back of their great 4th line, and had to roll my eyes because I knew that Ovi empty net goal was coming.

I think he'll score somewhere around 35–40 goals this season just based on deployment/ice time/PP/EN goals, but he's far from a dynamic presence out there. Can't really blame the guy too much, he's old now and had a long career.

There has been a trend in Ovi's career that's been downward the first 2 months were an aberration doesn't change that fact.

People saying that he was going to have a Hart caliber season last year based on 2 months were delusional.

His usage is obviously sheltering the decline but he will get his goals as the Capitals are all in on that train but it has nothing to do with his play which has been pretty lousy so far this season overall.

You just don't watch the games.

Ovie's been ringing the posts like crazy this year. The goals will come.

Can you show this trend? Ovechkin GPGs
2016-17 =.40
2017-18 =.60
2018-19 =.63
2019-20 =.71
2020-21 =.53
2021-22 =.65
4 years upward trend, then injured bubble season in toughest division, then up again.
Where is a downward trend?
