Will Ovi breaking Gretzky's goalscoring record change or influence his legacy?

Why?
If you want to add something add everything.
If you really want to do that, then Ovechkin is going to have to score 1098 goals. That's the worldwide professional scoring total of Gretzky, everything international, the WHA, plus what he scored for Team Canada.

It's not even the record, anymore. That belongs to Jagr who scored his 1101th goal in February of this year with his NHL and European and national team totals at the age of 51. If Ovechkin decides to play for Russia after his NHL days are done, which has stated he wants to do with Dynamo Moscow, he'll probably destroy that record.

Does it include his junior national team? From wiki Jaromír Jágr - Wikipedia Jagr's totals 1106 goals.
Ovechkin's totals 1049 goals, so he need only 58 goals without even breaking 894 and playing in Russia.

so. I still rank Nic and all his Norris trophies ahead of OV
It's sad that Ovechkin didn't play vs Lidstrom entire his career.
Ovechkin numbers would be about 1100+ goals and 2000+ points.

OV might have been able to play against Lidstrom in way more Games......if only The Great 8 and Caps could have got past the 2nd round more than once in his entire career .
Guess we will never know.

cheers

meh, If Ovi had Fedorov (peak), Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Yzerman, Hasek, he probably never left the PO.
Those guys have zillion trophies together.

Gretzky scored 70 goals for the Soo Greyhounds in the OHA, Jagr scored 5 for the Czech U-20, but junior tallies are not included in professional goal totals. When Gretzky scored his last goal, it was reported as 1098 in the media, and Jagr's latest, 1101.

In Russia, playing for Moscow Dynamo, Ovechkin scored 2 in 2001-2002, 8 in 2002-2003, 13 in 2003-2004, and 13 again in 2004-2005, plus the 2012-2013 season where he put in 19. That's a grand total of 55 in the KHL, and I'm allowing the 10 goals he scored as a 16 and 17 year old. In addition he also has 43 goals for the national team: 8 in the Olympics, plus 35 for the World Cups representing Russia.

All of which when added to his NHL totals of 894 leaves him with 992 to date.

So he still has 110 professional goals to go, or 120 if you don't count his teenage KHL goals, plus whatever else Jagr scores.
