If you really want to do that, then Ovechkin is going to have to score 1098 goals. That's the worldwide professional scoring total of Gretzky, everything international, the WHA, plus what he scored for Team Canada.Why?

It's not even the record, anymore. That belongs to Jagr who scored his 1101th goal in February of this year with his NHL and European and national team totals at the age of 51. If Ovechkin decides to play for Russia after his NHL days are done, which has stated he wants to do with Dynamo Moscow, he'll probably destroy that record.
