Him changing sticks shows that his current goal-scoring slump this season is starting to get to him mentally.
he hasn't used the same stick his whole career. Young Ovechkin was sponsored by CCM
Caps-sign-Ovechkin-to-long-term-deal.jpg

By at least 2012 it was Bauer
Ovechkin-2.jpg

and frankly since then it looks like he's jumped between them because you can find versions of both:

Here's an image taken from an article forecasting the 2017-2018 season with a Bauer Supreme:
ovechkin62.jpg

and then a 2018 finals photo with a CCM again

alex-ovechkin-game-3-scfjpg.jpg

So it's not the first time, it's just something he does likely related to his sticks that we'll never really get a good answer for

edit: damn, it didn't seem to want to actually load any of those photos despite showing them to me in the pre-post window but... I'll leave it up in case that's just something I'm seeing and let the rest stand for itself.

Fair points, but you have to admit bailing on his contract would not be retiring with grace. If he needs to sign some 1-2 year money tour for the record after this contract then I would agree with you.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’m talking about

OV getting assists still but goals arent there

Much rather he have 18 goals and only 4 or 5 assists at this pt

He is chasing 99s record and so close.

Pt wise he isnt going to move up the all time list much. Not likely to get past 1700 pts while 900 goals still doable

Will break it only 64 goals to go 32 each next 2 season . This number Will come Down . Lets say he only score 10 more goals . Its 27 goals each season he has left on his contract. If he can score 20 more its only 22 goals for 2 seasons
You talk like 27 goals per season is trivial. He got quite a drop this year (so far) in his production, no guarantees getting even older will see him get more production in the next two years. If he breaks the record, it will be with him playing in 3 seasons minimum, maybe 4.

And once we start to talk about 2026+, we need to assume there is no work stoppage for the next CBA, with how much things can change for the value of live TV products, not so sure... what percentage of post 1990s CBA got signed without any work stoppage ?

Since the 1992 NHL strike

1994 lockout lost 34 games.
The CBA was intended to expire in 1998, but was extended until 2004.
We lost 82 games in 2004-05
The 2005 CBA expired in 2012 and caused a loss of 34 games.
The 2013 CBA was supposed to expire in 2022, but was renewed with COVID until 2026.

So, we've had extensions go forward without game loss. But in terms of actual new CBAs, they've all caused game loss. The 2020 return to play is a unique case, where it is kind of a new CBA, but the game loss wasn't from a lockout.

I fully expect a 48 game season in 2026-2027.

Look, I still think he'll get the record, but doubt certainly starts to creep in. When you suggest if he scores 10 more this year he'll only need 27 goals the next 2 seasons.....but if scores 10 more he'd finish with 18 goals this year, so scoring 27 next year and the year after doesn't seem like a lock. At current pace, he'd only score 9 more this year. So....before too much doubt creeps in, I want to see what he does the rest of this year. Assuming he keeps the same pace, doubt starts to get noisier.....however, the remaining wild card is playing beyond the current contract.....but then you are looking at season at 41 years old and if he didn't get the record by then, he clearly didn't do too well in the few seasons prior so will he still be playing at 41?

So, not sure if I'm on the fence yet, but I'm getting close to grabbing on and starting to climb.....currently, I'd stay close to the side of the fence that has him getting the record, by the end of the year I may step further away from the fence or further toward, but doubt either would be by much. Even if he doesn't score another goal this year, I don't think I'd change my position drastically, the only possible scenario that moves my position more aggressively is if he goes and scores a ton of goals the rest of this year. If he scores 30 more goals this year, for example, nothing is set in stone, but that "doubt" would almost be gone.

It's crazy how it went from almost being inevitable to realistically not happening in one off-season.
Still not writing ov off yet, something tells me he comes back next season ready to play

He needs 65 tucks to get the record. This season, he’s averaging a goal every 4.75 games.

If this is his new normal, he’ll need to play another 309 NHL games. Uh oh….

He will play 500 more games if that is what it will take.

He won't stop after coming this far.

I have no doubts that the Capitals will continue giving him contracts too until he breaks the record.

Honestly, that puts him at retiring at 43. Same as Selanne.

Could be a ploy so he keeps getting contracts and extends his career :naughty: he does love playing though

One facet of the game where Ovi can still work to the positive for his team is as a coverage magnet, meaning teams are still scared of his shot so they put a little bit extra attention there, leaving other guys more open.

Old man Ovechkin….. is going to break a hip getting out of bed to take a pee in the middle of the night and miss his window of playing enough games to catch Gretzky.

Hey Gordie Howe played into his 50s….. so ovie may be able to catch Gretzky.

But Ovie is not Howe as sure as Ovie is not Gretzky! Ovie can’t a hold either of their jock straps in the big picture of hockey accomplishments!

I mean, given the fact that he passed Howe last year, he certainly can.

That all cements Ovi as the most selfish player I can think of. Sending out a washed player for (at least) 3 more seasons would be embarrassing.

"Washed" players don't lead their team in points. (Nevermind that he had 42 goals last season and 50 the year before).

I realize you didn't create this hot take and you are just parroting someone else but just know that it's gibberish.

And here's your "selfish" player. Again, not something you invented so don't take it too hard, but whomever you are parroting here has led you down a pretty bad path.

You can be washed as a goal scorer but still set guys up. Happens often.
