Congratulations to Wayne Gretzky!

Wednesday, december 27th 2023, Wayne passed Ovechkin in goals per game!

Gretzky .601
Ovechkin .600

When asked for his secret, Gretzky said chocolate bars and soft drinks were a more nutritious hockey meal than carbonara and vodka.

Man this is too funny, somewhere we can all hear someone screaming right now eh?

he was invisible against the rangers last night. a couple of nice little touch passes that was about it. looked like a 38 year old going up against much younger and faster players out there.

That's the part some people are really overlooking and at this point it seems like age has caught up and at this rate 67 more goals seems like a huge mountain to climb.

I think the 67 goals will be conquered but at a slower rate than most expected.

The worry with him is they are paying him almost $10 million for two more years and he is nowhere near that price tag anymore as a complete hockey player.

if he hangs around enough seasons he could do it, but if he looks like this at 38, what is he going to look like at 40?
He is pacing for around 15 goals this year.

Does he play another 4 years like this?

I mean if he just hangs around to beat Wayne and looks like this it really doesn't help or add to his legacy does it?

I think the story for Ovi has been written as second best player since the lockout (will be passed by McDavid sometime soon and as the best goal scorer of all time or certainly a strong contender and maybe 10-20 best player of all time and a top 5ish winger of all time for sure.

Something is wrong- be it sh*t conditioning or injury, drive. etc.

I know he always said he would finish with the Caps. Kinda wish he would go play for someone else, but his cap hit is crazy and he won't move from DC.

Something needs to change if he wants the record.

I think his best chance to break the record is staying with the Caps. Nowhere else is going to have the loyalty to him while his play declines with age.

I have always thought that Ovechkin would break out of his current slump and start producing more goals this season.

I have also always thought that Ovechkin would play as long as it takes to catch Gretzky's goals record.

But there sometimes comes a time when a professional hockey player's skating becomes so slow and so weak that they can't get into scoring areas quick enough or can't create enough separation from defenders in order to score.

For anyone watching a lot of Ovechkin this year, does Ovechkin's skating seem to be approaching these non-NHL calibre levels?

It would be such an Ovechkin thing for him to score 13 goals this season and then for him to come out and score 35 next year.

It will just be another "wtf was that season about?" When looking back at his career.

He needs to stay with the caps, because they will keep gifting him ice time even if he doesn't deserve it. Even this season, he's getting far better opportunities than he would deserve with his play alone.

He's snake bitten. Last time everyone wrote him off he ended up getting like 4 50 goal seasons in a row after 😂

Hes like an old truck now. No acceleration, fine once it gets moving, knows what he can and cant do anymore and makes decisions accordingly.

If he gets the puck at a stand still = shot or immediate pass, he does not even attempt to try and accelerate and carry the puck

If hes carrying the puck into zone w speed .. he's like an out of shape 38 year old carrying the puck into the zone w speed

His passing has been a lot more creative this year as he is actually looking to pass first sometimes and hes done more slapper passes to the front of the net than I ever seen him do.

Hes slowing down but also unlucky so far this year.

Ovechkin said he doesn't expect to break Gretzky's record.
That implies he's not gonna hang around as a sub-par performer just to beat Wayne.
