Nah I know theses pros aren't quitters but his honor is on the line.
He projects at 16 goals this season, to beat the record he would still need 55 after that. So that is at least 4, if not 5 painful season projecting a inevitable decline, and let's not kid ourselves here I am being nice, in reality it would be a gong show where he would probably have to stack up a couple of +/- 10 goals seasons until his near mid 40s while still eating top line minutes and prime PP time.
I said earlier I had gut feeling the guy was going to hanging them up mid season out of a shameful guilt trip, but with WSH winning so much he will stay for the playoffs. Ovi was an inspiration for most of us kids growing in the 2000s, it would suck to see his invincibility aura take too much of a hit.

The green papers aren't everything bro, and the gr8 surely doesn't lack in that department. Don't know the guy personally but a competitor like that must have a strong sense of honor and somewhat of an ego, the image people will have of him in his last few seasons in the NHL must surely be important to him.
But again the guy might score a hat-trick next game, which I kind of wish just to see all the lions here who must been waiting for god knows all long to post their told you so in this thread
. Would be great for him to, for his legacy to not be tarnished too much.

Yes LeClair retired leaving a lot of money for the legacy reason so it is possible, but not that kind of amount.
As for not lacking, I am sure you build the narrative that it is not for you, imagine all the good you can do, for cause X, your hometown, extended family, great grand children, et.c..

It's getting a little concerning. It's like he's not really driving plays and creating chances like he normally does. He looks okay mentally but seldom gets on his horse these days for those chances. I can't really put my finger on it. He doesn't look injured either. I hope it's just a really bad slump. I wouldn't say he's playing terrible, though. He's still getting assists and the Caps are winning.
Ovi hasn't driven play in years. He's not even a quarter of the player he was, but I don't believe his shot is gone completely. The goals will come, somewhat. The goal scoring is a bad slump I'm sure, although he may now only be a 20 goal scorer. What is gone and has been gone is his ability to drive play. I haven't seen him do that in years

In the present, Ovechkin's legacy may be tarnished if he keeps playing sub-par hockey for a long period of time just so he can catch Gretzky.
But 5-10 years after breaking Gretzky's record, nobody is really going to remember how he did it or talk about how he hung on far past his prime.
In the future, all that people will look at is Ovehkin's totals and not how pathetic he may have looked in his final 1-2 seasons.

Maybe not driving the whole play oneself but that's rare for any player. But even last year he was frequently involved in passing plays in the neutral zone, cross-seam passes, forechecking, and occasionally being the triggerman.

Bryan Hayes at TSN took a lot of criticism for leaving Ovechkin off a Top 50 Players list at the start of the season. Watch this video and Jeff O'Neill was killing him for it.

You have posted time and time again in this thread about 'what Ovie wants" and that he'll "play until he breaks the record".
Blah blah blah - you have nfi what he is planning on doing.
Ovechkin has come out several times and stated that Gretzky's record is one he wants.
It isn't a product of my imagination.
He's done. Time to retire.

Of course he wants that record. But as somebody said a few posts back, there is a matter of honour and dignity etc. If this is all he has left I personally don't think he'll play for another, what? 4,5 6 seasons to get the record??
What is most likely (imho) is that he needs to change his diet, drop some pounds, go to the net etc.
I am sure he is having conversations with coaches, trainers, etc. He is probably stubborn as f*** and has been telling them the goals will come like they always have, but sooner or later he has to realize that something has to change if he wants to still score goals.
Atleast ovie doesn’t have to make an excuse for missing the all star game this year…

If so, don't be surprised to see him voted in by the fans.

Ovi is nowhere close to the player he once was, but he’s still 2nd in points on the Caps. 2nd in assists.
It’s not like we’re discussing Chris Chelios in his later years playing in the AHL.
