The "Capitals are selling out for the goal record" narrative continues to look stupid as they win without Ovechkin producing.
Just because they are winning really has nothing to do with the fact that they have and continue to do so this season giving Ovi elite usage and pedestrian results.

I would suggest being more thoughtfully when throwing out the stupid phrase, especially when it doesn't apply.

I don't watch Cap games too often so I might be way off base here, but the one thing that gives me optimism with Ovi still is that he is shooting at just 5.6%. His previous career low is 10.5%, and he averages around 14%. I know he has lost a step, but that still seems unsustainably low.

There are 296 Forwards in the NHL with at least 30 or more SOG so far. Ovechkin is 271st among those skaters by shooting %.
The negative view you can take on shooting % and not expecting it to increase too much is back to the decline thing....he's not generating or getting as many chances so he's shooting more at times he wouldn't before because it's not as great a scoring chance, but the chances are fewer so he has to shoot when he has the opportunity and shot isn't as good as it was, so........that said, that's a bit of a reach, I don't necessarily see all that.....but at the same time, I'm not overly optimistic either of the shooting % all of a sudden increasing a lot

The bad news is: Ovi is slumping.

The good news is: The Caps are in a playoff spot.

As I suggested a few years ago, Ovechkin's reaching the all-time NHL goals record probably depends on how good/bad the Capitals are. Nobody wants to be the ex-superstar, now 12 year older than teammates, on a losing team that's going nowhere. But you do want to be the slightly faded superstar on a winning team that's competitive. It's fun when you're winning.

I’m not sure that’s actually good news for caps fans. They need some top prospects back in their system again. They won’t win any round with the current team. Very unlikely they make it but if they do hard to see them go anywhere.

They’ve got Pacioretty returning in a few weeks and should have a chunk of money available with Backstrom sitting. They could probably add some help if they want to take a run at it this year.

It is interesting to talk about some star goalscorers if you enjoy their game, do anybody really enjoys the way this untalented bag of meat played?

The issue isn't how many he'll score this year, it's how many more years he'll have to stick around after this one. Unless he's just gonna be a 4th liner who only gets PP time for the next 3+ years I don't see it happening.

As a native of a non english speaking nation i have some advice:

Perhaps before using cool derogatory terms like bag of meat, learn proper english. It will serve you better in the long run when you're acting like the BMOC online.

I imagine some would, he was quite the star power-showmanship to his game

A run at what, a playoff spot?

I still think Ovechkin will end his slump this season and put up a decent amount of goals. Maybe not 50, but around 30-35.

However, even if he is now a 20 goal or less player, then it won't impact him chasing Gretzky.

He will play as long as it takes to get to 895 goals. The Capitals will continue signing him to 1-year deals for as long as it takes to catch Gretzky.

I don't see Ovechkin declining to the extent that Marleau had declined when he was chasing Howe for the games played record.

But, even if Ovechkin declines to Marleau's level, the Capitals will keep sending him out on the ice until he breaks Gretzky's record the same way the Sharks kept sending Marleau out on the ice until he caught Howe.

They're not doing anything different than what they were doing the last oh I don't know decade back when nobody thought 894 was reasonable.

They are devoid of offensive talent, a guy who has scored 50 goals 9 times is going to get ice time in the offensive zone. The talk has been that they were losing games but okay with it as long as Ovechkin scored. It's been the exact opposite and nobody is angry.

Marleau was a fitness freak who took ice baths between periods and was still scoring at his career average rate at 37-38. Ovie has very noticeably fallen off and was never known for fitness. And lastly, playing a game is easier than scoring a goal during a game, let alone 25 for 3 more years after an already noticeable decline.

Before this year I thought Ovie would do it. Now I'm pretty sure he won't.
