How about not from wild’s perspective. Wild don’t need a dman, free agent to be in Nelson,

Kaprizov is not being traded before the Wild have an opportunity to re-sign him.
As much as I like Dobson, Kaprizov for me is more valuable than him. Don't know enough about the other guys in the deal to judge it overall but if Kap is willing to stay with the wild, I'm not trading him.

To Wild------Dobson, Nelson, Pulkkinen, 2025 1st.

To Islander--Kaprizov, Rossi.

Probably cost what you posted even if you removed Rossi entirely. Kaprizov won't be traded at a rental price. He'd cost the farm and I say that as a massive Dobson fan. Anyone trading Dobson for Kaprizov only does it with an extension in place so I think it's top dollar trade value or he isn't even considered to be moved.

Rest of the package, Nelson is 33 tomorrow. Islanders always find a way to fight in the standings so this isn't going to really high 1st and Pulkkinen don't know much about him but a recent 2nd rounder these aren't adds even to tip the scales moving Kaprizov for Dobson when they already have a top pairing RD in Faber.

Dobson is a legit stud so he is obviously a high end piece to add. But I don't see the Wild doing this. They will go right to the last minute to keep Kaprizov.

I understand why you want to make the move but it’s not necessary. Let’s fix the 4th line RW first and then go from there.

I think it’s a decent proposal

But I think wild focus should be resigning kaprizov

And I don’t think islanders should be moving dobson

Kaprizov is a top 5 winger in the league
Dobson might be a top 5 dmen in the league, if he’s not too 5 he’s certainly top 10

I'm guessing the Kaprizov situation will go one of two ways.

The Wild gaslight Kap into saying they will be a SC contender within a couple of season and extend him long term.

-or-

The Wild become stubborn and hang on to him in the futile hopes Kap will sign a pity contract. In his final contract year BillyG will call it "their own internal rental" for their high hopes/low results playoff run of 2026. Then trade his rights for a 3rd round pick.

Wild owner Craig Leipold did say no team can offer more term or will offer more money than the Wild. To his credit, Leipold is not adverse to spending money if he think it will improve the team. Only I don't think Kaprizov primary goal is money. He's a gamer, he wants Cups.

With Kaprizov my strongest memory of him is his first Wild training camp. He was practicing with the B squad during camp. He told the coach that he didn't come to America to play with shit. He was practicing with the NHL group after that. I believe it was in a Russo article. That told me a lot about him. He's a winner that wants to surrounded by the best.

Without Dobson and Kaprizov signed long-term this is a head-scratcher and that's before you put the Isles first and Rossi in there.

Favors the Isles by a lot. Even with Dobson signed long-term at 9.5 it still favors the Isles though who knows what Kaprizov is going to want on his next contract.

The loss of Kap and Rossi far outweighs the gain of Dobson on a Wild defense that already features Faber, Brodin, Spurgeon.

What about a trade surrounding Nelson & 2nd round pick for Rossi? It'd have to happen at the deadline, but if the Wild are serious they could take the next step by adding Nelson. He's from Minnesota so he'll most likely re-sign since he's a UFA. If the Isles fall off they could definitely move him, but it'd have to be for young players instead of picks.

Obviously the Wild don't do this
Why not? If the Wild turn out to be a real playoff contender, why wouldn't they want to trade for a tru 2C, probably low 1C who is a constant to get you 35 & 35 every year. His play will age well and he's from Minnesota so he definitely wouldn't oppose it. Trading Rossi is tricky, but if you don't believe he a huge piece to build around then going for it while also getting a pick back is reasonable. Nelson on his own would get a 1st + a decent player which is probably around Rossi's value, and the pick covers the future risk you take, even though you get better

Rossi is still on a nice upward trajectory and already fills a 1/2C role well for us. He’s not flashy and his numbers aren’t gaudy yet so he will be a reasonable bridge or maybe we lock him up to Ek like value long term. I’d like to sign Rossi to a 6x8 deal because he’s the most hungry kid I’ve seen. He’s motivated and coachable and wants to be the best.

Nelson is a great player but I don’t want to get older when our window is likely starting to open next year and will last as long as Kap is here.
