He played three games because they gave him no chance.
30+ teams had a chance to sign him in the summer as a UFA, he only managed a 2 way deal. He wasn't very good.

He's done well with Vegas, doesn't mean he'd have the same success elsewhere.

Is he playing in the Top 6 in Vegas?

Lol, it's not the Leafs, it's NHL coaching overall. If a player somehow doesn't fit the system, an NHL coach will never bother to get the best out of him and rather let him rotten in AHL or trade him. It's true about 80% of NHL coaches...

And then the player becomes a star on another team.
That’s not just limited to the NHL either. That’s every league.

There’s only 1 puck to go around and 60 minutes of ice. Hard to succeed when you only get 8/60 minutes and no power play time.

Mason Marchment is on pace to break career highs in both goals and points in Dallas.

He's developed into a solid top 6 player who brings size, old school physicality but also a great offensive toolbox with decent hands, good defense who looks to be capable of 20 goal, 50+ pt seasons if healthy.

He's turning 29 in June but a player Toronto would likely crave at this point of their year no?
How did they fumble this so bad?
He was traded to Florida for Denis Malgin in 2020 who played 30(?) games for the Leafs and overseas now.

Still missed by Panther fans, he's found a great fit in Dallas. Fun player to watch.

**Feel free to discuss about other players who've bloomed late and fell through the cracks of other teams**
The bolded means that he did not fit Dubas's phylosophy... Maybe if he was soft like butter they would had kept him.

Part of it was Mike Smith and Bob Pulford thinking they were the smartest guys in the room (Smith was a Pulford protege).

If we're talking about late bloomers, why on earth did Smith let Kris Draper hit waivers and the Wings bought him for a dollar? There are a lot of places in the history of teams where they gave away good players for nothing.

Belfour had firmly established himself as one of the best goalies in the league, so I don't fault Smith & Pulford for trading Hasek.

People will say he didn't look like anything here but also he was never given the chance and he looked real good in the few games the Leafs decided to give him. I thought it was a bad trade then when it happened too, his skillset at the time was something the Leafs desperately (and still) needed and they barely gave him a shot.

Well, not sure about American leagues but in European ones coaches have way more power about getting or not getting players. So if a coach has a player he'll either let him go immediately because he doesn't like him or he'll try to get all the best from the player.

A better question might be “how does Toronto develop talent so well” while Florida Floridas?

Why did the Leafs let Marchment go?

Why did the Leafs let Hyman go?

Why did the Leafs trade Kadri?

Because Kyle Dubas doesn't know what the f*** he is doing.

It was odd how good he would be at finding skill and just bad at finding gritty skilled players elsewhere.
I still say his best trade was Muzzin.

Tallon was all about truckulence and avoided skill for most part.
Funny how some GMs value certain type of players and not having enough balance?

Marchment-Jarvis-Verhaeghe... an entire line costing less than one of the big 4, that the Leafs (Dubas) pissed away for nothing.
Verhaeghe was Lou. There is zero way to know if the Leafs would have picked Jarvis with that pick.

Marchment is all on him

More crucially, how did Florida ever let a solid top 6 who brings size, old school physicality but also great offensive toolbox with decent hands leave via free agency? At least we got Denis Malgin back, what can you say?
agree a mistake for sure IMO

IIRC Marchment (who really should have been given more than 4 games) wasn't waiver exempt, and I believe the Leafs had someone coming off of the IR which needed a roster .. rather than risk losing him for nothing, they traded for someone who is waiver exempt. Not that I'm saying it was the right move, but those were some additional circumstances around it.

Moore was used as a chip in the trade for Campbell, to stabilize the goaltending. I wouldn't say he was just thrown away.

The Leafs didn't want to go an extra year and 500K for Hyman from what I recall was reported. At the time of that contract, I don't think anyone thought that the contract was particularly good and it could age horribly. But Hyman has gone against the grain and elevated his play, making the most out of playing with McDavid and Draisaitl. He wouldn't have had this level of success if he were still with the Leafs IMO (a lot of it is because of the lack of PP time). And he wasn't a particular standout in any post season games with the Leafs.

Shoulda got one game in
Cap space issues and Yandle having a NMC (Zito apparently never asked him to waive it) but most Panthers fans wanted him gone so Marchment could stay.

A little 3 card Monty. Damn. Didn't know that extra context. Thanks for that.

Crazy thing is that Hasek was left unprotected in the next expansion draft (1993) and both Anaheim and Florida passed on him.
