Did you watch the game? Edmonton was dominating the play, the devils cashed In on every chance they had. Tatars goal was pure puck luck, amd great hand eye don't get me wrong. Amd the Skinner mishap took away any momentum Edmonton had.

I think you only watched the powerplay sequences of the game where Edmonton was "dominant". Or maybe the powerplays made the game seem more competitive and even to the observant eye?
Because at even strength, Devils were just skating rings around the Oilers.
You don't win a contest 5-2 by being dominated by your opponent.

I think that it’s not just as simple as saying the reason for the turnaround was improved goaltendi h and adding a top 4 Dman.
It was that PLUS removing Ty Smith and Subban on the back end. Not to crap on them too much but they were terrible last year. Subban was “ok” I guess as a #6 but what we have now is miles better.
#1-6 is substantially better this year than last year.
Ya B Smith is nkt the sexiest D man in the world , but he is good in the locker room and provides needed veteran leadership.

What I think is the largest reason for improvement ( besides getting good goaltending ) , is the subtraction of Naz and Recchi and addition of Brunnet and the other assistants.
Tins of little things has greatly improved this year. Gap control , breakouts (short quick passes ) defence setup , stick checking , back pressure , generating offence from the defence , offence off the cycle instead of majority off the rush , strong identity and structured roles for every player .

You have been consistent in your criticism of Marino but I don’t think you give him enough credit for his new environment. He is fine down low and against the boards for NJ. I think the difference is how they ask him to defend. Whatever he did in PIT may not have worked at times but at least so far it’s worked well for NJ. He’s not getting manhandled or pushed around on the edges or down low. Is he perfect? Of course not but your critique just doesn’t seem valid at this point. Maybe he will fall back to old habits maybe not.

Luckily as we’ve went over, there is zero statistical evidence for him struggling in the playoffs. “I watched da games” isn’t convincing to me.

Marino was our worst regular defenseman at keep the puck out of the net over the last two seasons. 47.26 GF%

Same in the playoffs. 44.44 GF%.

Yes, these all strength numbers, yes these don't include xGF%. Neat. The team was better without him given the performance he put up in two consecutive regular seasons and playoffs. And yes you can make that argument for the majority of the Penguins defense in the last two playoff runs.

Oh look, more bullshit.

Marino has a GF% of 50% over the last two playoffs, the same number as Crosby. His xGF% is 65.5% in that time. Sorry your goalies suck shit and can’t even put up .900 SV%.

And are you expending Ty Smith to contribute in the playoffs? Good luck.

At 5v5. As we've discussed multiple times. The Penguins play systematically well for 50+ minutes and then get sunk by the 10 bad ones. Marino was a big part of a PK that went great in the regular season then got absolutely worked by the Rangers.

Anyways. I get it, Marino is the greatest Penguins defenseman and we shall all cry at his altar as he leads the Devils to the promised land.

I'm good. I just want to watch my team play hockey.

There's no narrative switch. Marino was the worst regular defensemen for the Penguins over the past two seasons at keeping the puck out of the net and getting the puck in the other net.

Player Season Totals - Natural Stat Trick
