Who Would Make Canada's Roster If There Was Olympics This Year?

Marchand and Stamkos are still elite players and putting up numbers, but I get what u mean. They’ll be stale by 2026. Agree with you on Crosby. I would still have him at centre because of his face-offs, poise and vision. But he’ll likely centre the 3rd/4th line with PP time. He may even pick up some PK responsibilities here and there too.

Konecny and Reinhart are good 4th line options. Reliable penalty killers, consistent producers and can be trusted defensively. I feel like our bottom 6 is missing that “woww” factor. For example, Nash and Toews provided that offensive firepower in our bottom 6 in 2010 while providing a strong forecheck. Im hoping Celebrini changes that and the way McTavish is playing, he may very well be Canada’s wildcard.
Its really only the age of Marchand, Stamkos and Stone that concerns me. I just think they'll be too old and in decline in 2+ years time when we announce our roster for 2026.

Good callout on Reinhart. He's a veteran at this point but because NHL players haven't participated in the last 2 Olympic cycles (or been able to organize a World Cup), players of his calibre haven't had an opportunity to get a look at the best-on-best level.

Guhle will make it if his development continues the way it’s been going

Possible. I think Byram and Power are better younger options right now. You’d also have to imagine that guys like Ekblad and Chabot may bounce back and will be entering their prime years. Chychrn would be in the convo as well. I think Toews and Makar are locks. Pietrangelo likely makes it too just based off his versatility, poise and previous Team Canada experience . Theodore and Morrisey are also likelies. Whoever fills those last 2 spots is a toss-up of who’s hot at that moment.

Agreed on Power, I think Guhle overtakes Byram very soon

The question is more like why they haven't played for Canada for all these years, is there a reason behind it, because obviously they are stars in the NHL (Letang and Fleury), btw I would still consider them as good options to make the team now.

Fluery represented Canada at the Olympics - I don't believe he ever played / he was the 3rd goalie. Posters can correct me if I am wrong.

He also played for Canada at the World Juniors in 2004. He was amazing and the reason we won. :eek3: Oh wait... I might be MIS-remembering that one. :(

I know Letang represented Canada at the World Juniors in 2006 and 2007 - IIRC, he took a penalty against Jack Johnson in OT in 2007 that ALMOST cost us the semi final win. Thank you Carey Price for saving the day in O.T. and the shoot-out.

When Letang's stick hit Johnson's face in O.T., I remember Pierre McGuire saying, "Oh no!". Johnson tried to sell 5 minutes but Letang only got 2.

I mean the Men's NT, not Juniors, but okay, my theory is that those star players who's teams usually are in the playoffs, don't want to play for NT because they want to rest after those rare seasons when they don't make the playoffs

As you know, it's hard to get Canadian (and American) players to play for the NT at the World Championships - they simply do NOT want to go.

I looked it up. Other than the World Juniors (and U17 / U18), Letang has never played for Canada internationally - he was always on the cusp of making a Best On Best teams but never did.

MAF played at 2 WJR's and was the 3rd goalie at the 2010 Olympics. Nothing else.

**

MAF might be an option for the next Best on Best but he's OLD and MANY people still remember his melt down in 2004.

As for Letang, I'm sure Canada can do better than a late 30's D-Man.

Don’t forget about Fleury’s chokes on the Penguins from 2010-2014 and how Matt Murray bailed the Pens out on their 2016 run. New kids and people gloss over this by saying “he has 3 cups.” There was a time where Fleury’s starter job in Pittsburgh was challenged and taken away from him on many occasions. Also the one game he started last in season’s playoffs for the Wild show why he’s not Team Canada material. Same People like to say how Luongo was a choker when he led Canada to a Gold medal and put up 2 shutouts in the Stanley cup finals. Fleury is another level of choke artist

Sorry, I miss read the thread title. Those are 2026 ages. I obviously just went with current pairings. AP might be a little long in the tooth by then.

That said, this is totally hypothetical as there isn’t actually Olympics this year. So I think that you should include Makar in the conversation

It's just sad that we have to wait till 2026 to see best on best, it will be nearly 10 years without best on best, I think that's the longest drought in my lifetime lol

There has to be some younger options by 2025 / 2026.

12 of the top 20 defensemen scorers are Canadian including younger players like Chychrun, Dobson, Bouchard, Durzi. Also, players like Kaiden Guhle, Jordan Spence, Bowen Byram, Kevin Korchinski and Arber X will have a chance to grow into something special in the next couple years.

No need to worry. If you want something to worry about, concentrate on our goalies.
