Fox is getting an extension either way. He’s going to be a life long NYR, there’s no concern over him walking pretty much ever. Dude risked his credibility by forcing his way through two teams to be here. The lack of extension won’t be the difference between him getting or not getting the C
you say that as if the Rangers are ready to drive a $72M contract to Fox's front door. Because that's probably what the extension is gonna look like. You might be right about it won't be the difference. I just see that the Rangers would want that in place first to make things tidy.

Again, Fox’s extension doesn’t change a thing of whether or not he’s getting captaincy. I would agree if it was literally anyone else

If I were a betting man, I'd bet on a decision that's entirely up to me too!

I am a betting man. Black Jack is my poison, lol, and I think there is a good chance Kreider gets it. But I tend to lose at the Casino so don’t take my word lol.

After watching the presser id say Kreider gets the C, it feels like they already picked the captain and with Zib unsigned I'd guess Kreider gets it, Trouba is a possibility too.

Kreider is a long-time and career long Ranger. He's been a part of the most significant core this franchise had in probably a couple decades before it. He came into the league under Rick Nash, Dan Girardi, Marty St. Louis, Brian Boyle, Ryan Callahan, Marc Staal, Brad Richards, and obviously, Henrik Lundqvist. He's had three vastly different coaches, been to a Stanley Cup final and on several deep runs (with this franchise). He is reportedly respected and depended on by young prospects of any status in the organization. They signed him to a 6 year deal with move protection as a 29 year old. You don't do that because you expect a player to match or surpass that value on the ice, not exclusively at least, for the life of that deal.

It's not important, but to me it just seems obvious that Kreider is the only real candidate, other than maybe Mika (who's a pending UFA). To not give him the C--moreover in favor of Trouba--just feels disrespectful and misguided. What has Trouba accomplished in this league? More importantly, what has he done for this franchise and as a Ranger. I don't dislike Trouba, and I don't know him personally at all, but frankly the answer is not much.

I was warming up to Trouba, but when you put it this way it's kinda hard to argue against. Well said.

Could also be that i'm missing hockey so much that i'm forgetting how frustrating CK can be, but all your points still stand!

Throughout this past season it’s been clear that Trouba is a big influence in the locker room, and despite his rocky first year he’s got the kind of clean-cut image and level of experience that an NHL team would want in a leadership role. Making him captain could also help the Rangers gain some control of the narrative around Trouba’s contract by implying that his value lies in no small-part with his pull among team-mates.

Kreider is a good option, but he honestly seems to be more introverted with a fiery side, which is better-fit as an alternate. He doesn’t need the C for anyone to respect his tenure or influence, but he’s also never been a foundational piece.

From everything I've seen, Kreider is A leader and a great guy as well. Tremendous team guy and does what he can as a mentor. My concern with handing him the captaincy is that I tend to think his game suffers frequently and for extended periods from just being inside his own head way too much. All that intelligence and insight seems as though it gets misapplied. I think one quality wanted in a leader is to help ensure consistent effort from a bunch of disparate individuals night after night. Given his own struggles in this regard I'm not clear he's an optimal choice, and I think the extra responsibility would just magnify his performance issues. Which is a shame because if he'd been able to overcome the "where's Chris" syndrome more successfully I'd be 100% on board with him as obvious captain.

That all said, we could certainly do worse, though I do suspect the buzz around Trouba is correct. If nothing else, there's also the failure to name Kreider captain for the last three years running to consider.

I'm not wild about either Kreider or Trouba...but if those are our final choices, it's Trouba hands down.

Kreider or Lindgren would be my choices for now as captains., Fox or Lafy in the future within the next few years.

Kreider really should be the guy and the fact that they didn't name him captain last year after signing his extension is more of an indictment about Quinn's indecisiveness than it is proof Kreider shouldn't be captain.

As noted on here, and in the occasional news coverage, any hesitations about naming Kreider captain were not a Quinn thing. They existed before anyone here was even talking about Quinn and the discussions have continued now that he's gone.
