Who will get the captaincy?

Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. Trouba is clearly the best candidate in my opinion. With that said, I wouldn’t be in a rush to name someone from last seasons locker room situation. I’d rather wait and see if Fox or Lafreniere can grow into that role over time. I just don’t want to see Kreider’s name mentioned again. I’d don’t think he or Zibanejad have the mentality for it. Lindgren is still young and I don’t think he’s enough of a core player to be in the conversation. I can’t see vet stars going to Lindgren, although I’d like to see him wear an A.
I also think whose wearing the C matters more to the fans view of the team image than it does to the players.

Trouba should be bought out, not named captain. That's disgusting.

Consistent performance, leadership, and a future with the team that doesn't involve looming contract issues. Naming someone who is massively underperforming their contract as captain is just begging for drama and distraction.

I do think Trouba still fits the bill for the captain. Is he overpaid? Yes, but not that much in all honesty when you look at his value for the team. I would prefer Trouba to Kreider.
While I'm not in a hurry to name a captain myself either, if we don't name a guy now we are waiting another 3-4 years. Because no, you are not giving it to Fox or Laf this soon. No f***ing way.
There are too many people in NA who think a captain needs to be a great player. No he doesn't, he just needs to do well in the locker room and give his all on the ice.

Trouba is being paid like a #1 but he isn't a true #1. He's a good, solid #2. No shame in that. That's not Trouba's fault. Bought out? The dead cap space would hurt the team more than his overpayment currently does.
Trouba has enough trouble being a top pair defenseman. I’d rather Kreider got it. He’s been a long time and loyal ranger, a mentor to a lot of players. He strikes me as the type to play better with the C.
I never thought about how the extra weight of wearing the letter last year might have contributed to Trouba skating in mud. Probably a good idea to take away the A.
No one has really deserved the “C” since Callahan. McDonagh was a meh captain. Really no rush for this. Maybe one of the younger players will be deserving in a couple of years. I honestly have not really thought about this as of late. Getting used to just having “A”s. I just want to see a competitive team on the ice and they make the playoffs again. Don’t need a “C” for that.

I suspect they’ll announce at the end of training camp. Would be shocked if it’s not Kreider or Trouba.

It should and likely will go to whoever is a major locker room leader and presence both on and off the ice. Someone who is respected by their teammates. I can't imagine contract status will play any role at all, unless the team has already decided they're getting rid of a guy next year or whatever.
The whole "player X isn't worth his contract" thing is something that concerns the fans, but to my knowledge that's not really something the players themselves care about. You might get the odd player who is resentful, but otherwise most players are happy for their fellow guys when they get the big contract.
I have it as a toss up between Kreider and Trouba, based on what I've read about the team's makeup and have observed over the years.

Fox is getting an extension either way. He’s going to be a life long NYR, there’s no concern over him walking pretty much ever. Dude risked his credibility by forcing his way through two teams to be here. The lack of extension won’t be the difference between him getting or not getting the C
Kreider is the player I see communicating the most on the bench and seemingly trying to motivate guys. He's also a veteran here. I've always thought it should be Kreider....then again, I can only see so much from my living room tv.

Fox will get it eventually. Not not now, not while the team is loaded with high profile vets. It really should go to Kreider. Definitely not Trouba

Same. Kreider is a friend of a friend, so I certainly don't know him but have heard that he's a good guy off the ice as well. Take that for what it's worth. I'll also say, winning breeds winning. Kreider is basically the only guy left from those teams that were basically as successful as you can get without winning a cup. That matters, he knows what the culture of the team was during those years.

Kreider is said to be extremely intelligent off the ice. And he has given thoughtful comments and interviews in the past. He's emotionally balanced and level headed in public. I think it's long overdue that he got the C.
