If they had better stability I'd have no problems in Arizona, but they don't have stability. They'd be a popular UFA destination I think if they had a Jeff Vinik type running the show.

Everything else would center around the state of the team but if I were a fringe player or a young prospect I'd make do with the Winnipeg/Edmonton/Ottawa type markets and then make a decision when UFA status is available.

Canada. And have you noticed a slight uptick in activity on the TTC?

I hate Canadian politics for a lot of reasons. What I'm saying is players with wives and daughters may be slightly hesitant to move to a country where they can't defend themselves without significant legal repercussions.
Wow really, you think that women and children would prefer living in ths usa because they could be victim of a violent crime but because its canada they cant defend themselves?

The f*** you smoking....

You do know violent crimes in the usa are insanely happening more per capiata that in canada.

Also canada is 7th per capita for gun ownership, so yea we also own gun, but we dont pray to them.

Easy. I'm not saying people wouldn't have preferences on either side. I'm saying with all other factors taken into consideration, some may prefer the US where they can defend themselves should something happen vs Canada where they can't defend themselves should something less likely to happen, happens.

I also don't recall ever even bringing guns into the equation. Maybe it was implied on my part as within the realm of self defense, but I'm saying you can't carry anything that could be considered a weapon in self defense in Canada, which does a massive disservice to those who are less able to defend themselves hand-to-hand.

Again, not denying that - just saying that should anything occur (and it does seem to be happening more frequently up here), some may prefer those they care about to have a reasonable means of self defense.

Depends on the means, I suppose. Making it legal and socially acceptable to have more weapons on the street would likely just lead to even more violence, but it would depend on the means you are referring to and also the control over said means. If you're just referring to things like pepper spray like you mentioned earlier, then sure, but the whole 'let's make it okay to carry a gun to the grocery store' just perpetuates further violence.

I have never in my long life heard or read about someone not willing to move to canada for safety or self defense, now weather, taxes and smaller towns i would understand.

I think we're probably on opposite ends on this, since I would on a personal level disagree with the last statement (maybe not disagree with the fact of it, just disagree as far as the restriction of it), but I'm glad we can agree on things like pepper spray being a fairly reasonable precaution to allow for some self-defense.

It's not often the case since most people wanting to come to Canada will probably have different priorities and different views on it - but I do know several Canadians who have considered moving or have moved as a result of that.

On the flip side, I could totally understand Americans wanting to move away as a result of laws or events there. Just depends on priorities.

1) Winnipeg - City + weather + team quality
2) Calgary - Same deal
3) Minnesota - Weather + I hate them
4) Vegas - went for a long weekend and would like 2.5 days of my life back, also the heat
5) Toronto - The pressure. City itself would be good though
6) Buffalo - Don’t want to live there
7) Columbus - Don’t want to live there + team quality
8) Blues - Don’t want to live there + team quality
9) Arizona - What a gong show
10) Edmonton - Would be number 2 if McDavid and Drai weren’t so good it makes up for the City

Winnipeg - lived in Regina for a few years, very cold
Edmonton - Winters suck here
Calgary - same as Edmonton and Winnipeg
As an NHL player you play what three games every week? Most of those weeks include at least one away game. It's not like you will experience much winter going from your home to the arena to airport and back every second day.

I HAVE to get a 10 because I don’t want to waste it all on Canadian cities lol. Not a nationalist kinda thing, but all those little day to day differences in life in a different country would probably get to me more than the big differences. I like my familiarity. And warmth.

1-3 in no specific order: Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg. Too far from civilization and or cold, and at least 2/3 are perpetually stuck in the mediocre middle of the league making all of that even less worth it.

4. Canucks: poorly run and people say it’s super expensive there. Even on a big contract I’d like to spend as little as possible before I retire. I wanna win and or be able to buy more with less.

5. Arizona: Assuming I’m in my prime, I’d love to play in Kachina jerseys in a non traditional market IF the team were competitive. But they’re rebuilding.

6. Blackhawks, rebuilding

7. Anaheim, rebuilding and I assume expensive but I don’t mind other aspects of California.

8. Sharks, rebuilding and I don’t think they’re as close to finished as some people think.

9. Habs: rebuilding and intense market.

10. Toronto: media, market, they probably couldn’t afford depth

I mean I'm sure you already take plenty of precautions in your day-to-day life. Probably wear a seatbelt, lock your doors, etc. It's really not a huge step to carry something (without even getting into firearms) like pepper spray just in case.

Small canadian towns with awful weather and people will know who you are as soon as you leave the house

Winnipeg
Edmonton
Calgary
Winnipeg

Arizona pee wee arena no fan base

Places with zero appeal to me

Minnesota
Buffalo
Columbus
Carolina

If I were given 10, I'd probably block playing in Canada. I probably would be fine with Toronto or Vancouver if not for the going to Canada part but I would just strongly prefer playing in the US. The other Canadian teams I probably would strongly consider blocking off regardless. For the 4 remainings, Arizona because of uncertainty and the small arena, St Louis and Detroit because of biases, and maybe end it off with Columbus because I don't think I'd want to live in Columbus if I'm not attending Ohio State lol.

1. Buffalo -- too close to home, cold, and not going to win anytime soon.

2. Winnipeg - been there once, not ever want to go back. Plus, does anyone even know what they're doing? I think they are even aware that they don't know, and just don't care.

3. Minnesota - hate em, plus its cold. Plus they were a thorn in the avalanches side for years, and they aren't going anywhere.

4. Columbus- meh. Nothing exciting going on there right now.

5. Toronto - Wayyyy to close to home, and I don't see this current core getting it done.

6. Calgary

7. Vancouver

8. Montreal

9. Ottawa

10. Arizona - how do they still exist?

It's a shame so many canadian teams are so horribly run. Other than Edmonton and Toronto all the rest have no realistic shot at a cup right now, and Toronto and Edmonton aren't exactly proven playoff teams either.

I prefer to list my YMC teams- assuming im 23-25 years old, pre-married/kids

NY- Best food in the world, hottest babes. Give me a short contract so I can start a family somewhere else
ANA/LA- The areas the players actually live, cant beat it. More best food in the world, more hottest babes
NSH- Go see Shania Twain in town and go back home to your peaceful ranch.
COL- I have a friend who lives here. I could call him up, see what hes up to
SEA/VAN- I like the islands up there

All the other teams, im cool with too. Except maybe AZ or Winnipeg

Its always funny seeing people list cities they've never been to because of things that they heard or seen on the internet lol but to each their own.

My NMC list would be

1-Chicago - Personal dislike, also still mad about the Beach situation and lack of real punishment.
2-Arizona - Too much uncertainty.
3-Winnipeg - Too cold.
4-Pittsburgh - Mainly just personal dislike of the team. City is beautiful.
5-Ottawa - Personal dislike.
6-Montreal - Too much pressure and constant media attention. Also cant speak a lick of French.
7-Toronto - Same as Montreal, minus the French.

As for cities I would play for?

Detroit - (Duh) I live twenty minutes away from downtown, team will be on the upswing soon imo.
Nashville - (Also Duh) Beautiful city, warm weather, fans are loud and passionate. Fun place.
Seattle - Im surprised theyre on people NMC list. Beautiful city and area. I've had a blast everytime i've been.

And honestly, any other team not listed i'd likely play for as long as im getting paid handsomely to play hockey.

As someone who loves to golf Arizona doesn't seem all that bad. My golf game would improve tremendously.

This brings up a good point.

NHLers really seem to like golf. I'm sure some pretend they do and others don't care at all but I browse through Hockey twitter a lot and will see plenty of content of players/teams golfing while on their off-day or while on the road, especially when in Florida or Vegas or other warm-ish places. Arizona is one of the few places in the league where you can golf pretty much year-round.

If they could get competent ownership/management they'd be golden.

"I dont want to play in those cities because of the winters" Some of you must be nba players never seen so much whining about the weather. They wont go play in Toronto because of the cold but will go play in Chicago or NYC who get basically the same winters Toronto gets. even Kawhi whined about the cold in Toronto. Last time I was in Toronto during the winter was December 2011. There was green grass and it rained.

I'd suck it up and play in Edmonton if it meant playing with that guy McDavid and his buddy Draisaitl

Yes yes i know I get it, its a broken record "the winters are the shit" in "Deadmonton" the nightlife is pretty good. The river valley is friggin amazing. You dont have to stay here year round. Can always go somewhere in the summer etc. 4 hour drive to Banff etc.

I'm curious if it's a weather thing, or if Americans actually hate Canada that much even though it's basically a better version of the United States?

The seven Canadian teams.

It's a lovely country to be in but it's not a country I want to play hockey in.

I have no interest in being famous. My top places to play would be New York, LA, or a non-traditional hockey market where I can just be a guy.
Now this I get.
