Seems each year the trend is towards folks not wanting to live in Canada. I mean, there are obviously many good reasons that the US is preferable for those with income, but it's something I think is accelerating still.
Political reasons, quality of life, climate, tax rates, better organizational leadership….. the list goes on and on

Bad team more often than not:
Arizona, Columbus

City I dont want to spend 8 months in:
Buffalo, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Ottawa

Bad Ownership:
Calgary, Vancouver

That is a lot of nice locations on the west coast!
I think the "meme" of west coast California is "nice". Reality no longer matches up. Last time I was in Seattle, it was as bad as Portland. SJ may be okay but high cost of living and the influence from the northern bay area is horrendous. I stopped servicing the SF/Oak/SJ area about 2 years ago. Refused to send to people there.

New York for many of the same reasons. Buffalo might be okay though but I have other hobbies that would get in the way.

But but but but but but...free healthcare (that I quietly pay a 50+% tax rate for to get 2nd rate service)!!!

The only teams I wouldn't want to play for are MTL/BOS because they're a rival for my team (TOR) and DET because that is literally the worst city I've ever been to.

Pittsburgh - No way, no how.
Rangers
Devils
Islanders - Don't want to live in or around NY, also rivalries.
Dallas - Don't want to live near that many Cowboys fans.

Don't really have any hard nos after this point, but if I get to control my destiny, I might as well use it.

Chicago - still not OK with the org after the Beach incident
Arizona - too much instability; they'd be off the list if I knew they'd be staying

OK, time to get frivolous.

Hurricanes - still mad they're not the Whalers anymore
Predators - too much yellow
Boston - I might waive for the Bruins, but they're still a rival. I'd prefer control over this one.

Hopefully I'm not the only one that would have his favorite team on his NMC list because otherwise that's embarrassing

For me it would just be places I don't particularly like to be. Of which there are very few, but:

Florida
Tampa
Columbus
Anaheim
Boston
(and maaaaaaaaaaybe Dallas)

when I visit Edmonton and Calgary I'll decide if they're on that list or not I guess. But even still, I think I could have an enjoyable life making, at bare minimum, hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in any North American city.

If I had a full NMC and could choose my destination? Probably: Seattle, Vancouver, Denver, San Jose, Pittsburgh, Nashville. Could tolerate Chicago, Philly, Toronto, and most other places. Never been too keen on living in LA or NYC based on my own economic reality, but I've also never been a millionaire, so I think either could be be fun for a few years if I had lots and lots of money. As far as the truly huge cities go, Montreal probably tops my list.

At the same time I have cousins that moved to California in the last 5 years and say how much they love it there. They make a lot of money and live pretty nice lives, though.

NHLers won't live in high crime municipalities that allow homeless to roam free.
Yeah you mostly hear how bad things are from people who either have never lived here or lived here 10 years ago and hear made up stuff. I make a decent living and it's expensive, but it's nowhere near any sort of chaotic wasteland of homeless people stealing your car and eating your kids like they want it to sound like.

Anyway, to the point of the thread:

Arizona - directionless and who knows where I'll actually be playing in a couple of years.
Winnipeg - Too cold in the winters for me I think
Dallas - Too hot in the summers and just not a fan of the city itself. Kinda boring and beige.
Anaheim - Personal bias being a Kings fan.
Buffalo - Similar to Winnipeg. Too cold for me probably.

Other than that, send me anywhere. I'd totally play for Toronto or Montreal. If I'm a top player, I'd LOVE to help one of those cities win. You win a cup as the man in Toronto and you're gonna get a statue and be a legend in that city forever.

Strikes me as odd that people wouldn't want to be a wealthy person in a big city like NY or LA too. All the amazing things to do around these places and you're concerned because you're going to only get $8 million a year instead of $8.8 million a year? The pearl clutching is amazing.

Plenty of reasons to not play in Vancouver and, of course, to each their own. But I think I’ve seen a couple people note “cold” as a reason not to play there. That’s… odd. I sometimes feel like people see the Celsius readings and get confused.

Anyways, my choices would be to exclude the teams based on the following priorities:
- travel time over course of season (less is better and east coast teams are LUCKY)
- city population size (larger probably better than smaller)
- probably not Florida

The tax issue is really overblown here. And when it comes to evaluating team decisions, some people seem to overestimate the significance of winning to the players. We don’t want to hear it, but everybody works a job. Family considerations, lifestyle, etc. likely count for way more to people who have secured their position in the league.

Give me privatized over free any day of the week

It would all depend on where I was in my career, money made, team success.

Let's say I am a top 6 guy, mid/late 20s, made good money, and want to win.

Arizona
SJ
Anaheim
Detroit
Columbus

If I have had success and made a lot of money,

Toronto
Edmonton
Calgary
Winnipeg
Ottawa
Montreal
Vancouver
Detroit
Buffalo
Minnesota
