Matthews contract choice

  • $12.8M x 3 years

  • $13.8M x 5 years

  • $16.7M x 8 years

If it's three years, there should not be any trade or move clause.
Actually I would not want an 8 yr deal, sounds too much like JT issue.
AM decline last season when 2 guys from Edmonton took over the league is concerning. While I loved AM before, paying him long term after a down year is suicide for the Leafs.
He must re-establish himself as a top 4 or 5 player.
Extend him for 1 yr would be best team option.
After last yr you could argue MM and WN were more valued.

Same. An 8 year deal is playing with fire.

Not correct at all. Even at a big discount there would be no justification for Matthews only getting $10M. We’d all love it obviously, but it wouldn’t have to be that low to be a demonstration of taking less for the betterment of the team
You don't think that him taking $10M would be a big discount and show that he wants to help the team win?

I’m saying the post you agreed to specified he’d take $10M specifically if “Matthews wants to win and be a team guy”. There’s a range still going a good deal higher than that which would say the same thing

13.34 on an 8 year deal. Otherwise anywhere between 3-5 years it shouldn’t be more than 12.5 per.

He didn't say it would have to be that low.

Other than that, you're correct too.

That ship sailed on July 1st. It's a sign for ransom or lose him for nothing now.

Blank check ready at this point.
Yuck, unfortunately you're probably right. You don't think we would be able to trade him at this point though? Even not getting fair value back would be better than losing him for nothing or signing him to one of those deals.

5 years. That's reasonable, although at that money I'd rather it be at least 6 years.

That last option is absolutely gross. I'd want Treliving fired on the spot if he agreed to that.

$100M 8 year deal like McJesus and MACK signed .. period .. and he should feel lucky to get that $$$ those 2 get cause he is nowhere near as good a player

In the event Matthews drags it out and walks out the door as a free agent next summer, at the very least the Leafs will have almost $12 million to reshape their franchise and put to bed a non committal franchise building block and peace of mind. I’m not saying this is the preferable or they’ll be better off in the short term but it will flush clean a lot of the tension with this team and put to bed the notion that a guy won’t even let us make him the highest paid player without so many conditions.

I can't see how. unlike Nylander who got limited NTC - submits 10 teams he can't be dealt to, Matthews would have to agree to any trade.

At the same time, you need to consider the buyer.

No one willing and capable of signing him long-term would also trade away draft picks to get him a couple of months sooner.

Maybe we could get a couple of 1st round picks from teams like Bruins(or maybe especially Bruins since they lack C and cap space for this year)- potentially making another cup run if we retain salary?

How badly do we need those picks?

if he plans to go to Arizona we can get something from a potential contender for 1 year rental.

The best part is, no one wins in this scenario.

Imagine being Boston/any contender in this situation- you'll be out in the first round with Matthews looking stupid and your picks are gone. Because this is the same playoff Matthews we had.

The conditions couldn't be better on their previous contract. The amount of frontloaded money they cashed out in a year broke them.

Don't blame the players we spoiled. Everyone is trying, but it's getting hard to find more mustard for deserving players! I'm not even joking at this point, what else is there?

Both Mitch and Auston got $30,4 mill in 357 days thanks to a signing bonus. No more tax talk, the odds are they spent two weeks a year in the tropical tax heaven and paid 0 tax on it.

I would tell him that if you sign for 8 years with a decent team discount and play out the full contract as a Leaf you will likely go down in history as the Greatest Leaf Of All Time. He will obliterate the Leafs goals record.

Gaining that status is no small feat and will come with no shortage of endorsements. You're not getting those in Arizona. Might have to take a million less for 8 years now. But he'll get 40 years worth of 100k for a 30 second commercial. Him and Marner are already #1 and #2 in endorsements in the NHL.
