Matthews contract choice

  • $12.8M x 3 years

  • $13.8M x 5 years

  • $16.7M x 8 years

What’s your reasoning for these numbers?

Poll should be flipped:

16.7 x 3years
13.8 x 5 years
12.8. 8 years

As years goes up, yearly cap hit should come down.

Now you making 12.8 x 3 look even better :)

But in general I agree with your logic.

At the same time, 3-year deal means another 4 years of Matthews. And there is no way in hell he can command 16.7 4 years from now.

Imagine signing him to 16.7 x8 just to have him on LTIR by year 2.

If only a doover ...

Connor McDavid signed an 8 year deal as the best player in the NHL at $12.5 mil = $100,000,000 mil total.

Matthews signed a 5 year deal at $58,195,000 mil total at $11.639 mil AAV, which should have been 8 years in length even at that rate = $93,112,000 total.

If you take option A now of $12.8 mil X 3 = $38,400,00 total (a doover to correct for 8 years) + $58,195,000 mil (current deal) = $96,595,000 total.

That means over the course of 8 years comparing both contracts 1-1 then Matthews would have come in ($3,405,000) less than McDavid on term

The current AM contract was a ($96,595,000 - $93,112,000) = + $3,483,000 mil mistake or +$425,625 AAV/year on average.

However "Best Case Scenario" picking Option A: $12.8 mil X 3 as a doover would still bring AM below CM on 8 year term for both.

Then when McDavid signs his next contract, you can autocorrect again to bring Matthews back in line and below Connor AAV, based on comparable stats and achievements and accomplishments.

$12.8M X 3 YEARS

Because it's the only deal that makes sense. Matthews is starting to show wear and tear and we don't know how well his wrist is going to hold up, it's been a problem for a while now. Any contract longer than three years at this point in time is not a smart move. It's going to look stupid in the long run if his wrist is no longer an issue but I think you need to play it safe right now with three years.

Plus three years gives you enough time to see if they can get it done and make progress in the playoffs and then you can decide if you want to move him or not.

The past 857 years weren't enough evidence that Auston Matthews is a mercenary with nagging health issues and erratic playoff performance?

None of the above. they are all overpayments given the term attached. Absolute madness

Also this

I just pass.

It's a given a 1C is a prerequisite to do anything in the NHL but at the same time, if you f*** up your cap structure this much, you're not winning anything doing that either.

I'd rather he just say he doesn't want to play in Toronto.

Show me another team that would pay 16.7M, seriously. Show me.

Dubas level bad. Let’s hope Treliving is bright enough to not even contemplate a number like that.

What did you expect the AAV to be when this was the production the last 4 seasons?

It's just funny to watch people say that Dubas would have handed out a bad contract to Matthews.

Treliving's worst characteristic from his short GM career seems to be terrible signings.

those are his last 10...

Just hoping he has learned

Any of the first two would be fine with me. Voted the 2nd because he will still be one of the absolute best players at 30 and 31, after that it gets trickier depending on how his health holds up and just too much money anyway.

Which one is the bad contract?

Blake Coleman I could kind of understand but outside of that, all those players get those contracts all day.

Plus factor in the "Calgary tax"

5 years is ultimately the most desirable term. It gives the leafs the majority of Matthews remainibg prime years and doesn't carry any long term risks.

Huberdeau was the 3rd highest scoring player in the league for several years before that contract. Ahead of Marner and Matthews.
