Where are McDavid and Draisaitl when it matters?

He can have 4 points next game though. I wouldn't call him a choker after only 2 games.

I agree, it is kind of ridiculous.

McDavid is a great player but has been thrust into a situation like Mario was when he came into the league. Mario was the greatest player in the league in the late 80's but didn't have the team around him to get the job done. Once he did he won two Cups before injuries shortened his career.

McDavid will be fine. If he doesn't win any Cups it is his GM and coaches fault for not being able to build a team around the current best player in the world.

The reactionary posters on HF never disappoint.

I've watched bits of the first two games and I think you have to credit Maurice for this. They've kept McDavid and Draisaitl to the outside, and I don't think I've seen a situation where an odd-man rush can arise. They have their neutral zone set perfectly. They're sacrificing some offense for defense but these low scoring games favor Winnipeg.

Maurice has been a genius. Everyone here makes it sound like it's easy to shut down McDrai, it's not. This is 2001-02 Carolina Hurricanes Maurice hockey and every Jet has bought into it. He prepared his team really well whereas Tippett has done nothing to prepare his team. They were off for a week thinking they were just going to coast and win this series.

The Jets TEAM is out playing McDavid and Draisaitl. It's a TEAM game not a 2 person game. The shock isn't the play of the Oilers stars but rather that the Jets are suddenly playing like a team.
I think the demise of the Jets was greatly over exaggerated. They have a deep and skilled set of forwards and one of the best goalies in the league. They looked very, very good until the last few weeks of the season. I would favour them over Montreal, and with Tavares out I’d probably favour the Jets over the Leafs as well.

Anyone who watches the Jets on a regular basis can see that they are playing a very different defensive system in they're own zone when defending the rush. During the regular season they would play strict man to man and try to chase McD and Drai all over the ice. There isn't a team n the league that will succeed against the Oilers doing that. Here in the playoffs the Jets have seamless transitions between defenders on them and when defending the rush with McD and Drai they are getting multiple bodies involved and being physical with them. The Jets are playing a pretty good playoff system. There is a reason Helle only had to make a couple highlight reel saves in game one. Good team defense against two of the best. In game two with McDrai put back together full time as a line the Jets did the same things and were able to neutralize them all night. To the Oiler's credit they did create many more opportunities with this setup, but the Jets in game one and two played textbook playoff hockey. Smith played great in both as well, but he got Vezinabuycked.
Obviously I hope the Jets keep the success going, but I think game 3 will really define this series. If the Oilers can find another gear and a strategy to break the Jets down this series will go 6 or 7. If game 3 mirrors games 1 and 2 this could be over in 4 or 5.

It’s more indicative of the garbage team that the Oilers built. The Leafs top two centres aren’t as good as McDavid and Draisaitl, and they make more combined, yet the rest of the lineup is still good. The Oilers lineup is really bad after those two and Nurse.

The Leafs get to put Marner and Hyman with Matthews, Foligno and Nylander with Tavares. If McDrai are separated, you have what, Nuge and Pulju with McDavid, Archibald and Kahun with Drai? That is f***ing abysmal.

If McDavid and Drai had the ability to make their linemates that much better like Crosby and Malkin and MacKinnon etc, then they would almost never play together except on the PP. Unfortunately they don't have the ability and their linemates just aren't good enough.

RNH would be a third liner on a legit contender.
Kahun? He wouldn't even crack the roster on any other NHL team, yet he's McDavid's RW a lot of the times.:laugh::laugh:
kahun was playing with crosby not long ago actually lol

The refs allow a gazillion penalties in the playoffs. This neutralizes a lot of talent. The game should be called the same. (Also, I am tired of seeing crosschecks to players heads not being penalties.)

I am not even an Oilers fan. “Let them play” equals a very dumbed down version of the game.

Nope, constant whistles and 15 minor penalties a game kills the flow of the game and makes the game dumbed down. The reason the NHL calls penalties loosely in the playoffs is because that's what viewers want. Makes for more exciting, more authentic playoff hockey and draws better ratings.

So how do you explain his ability to dominate in the regular season?

Great players produce regardless.

Don't forget Kassian and Chaisson used as top 6 wingers. They're good!

Oilers shouldn't have gotten rid of Matt Hendrix or Pat Maroon. They were very good solid players for them who played their role very well.
As a Jets fan, I would be very happy to see Matt Hendricks dress and play big minutes for the Oilers in this series

Because teams have less time to plan. You go from playing slow and unengaged Monahan to having to face the fastest and most skilled player in the NHL, it’s going to catch you off guard. Not everyone buys into every single minute of the regular season, but everyone is working their tails off in the postseason. There’s a few reasons.

Sidney is a much different player than Conner. Sid is more like Peter Forsberg. A combination of great skill, and 200 feet of high compete, whether puck on stick or not.
Conner is the best with puck on stick, providing he has time and space.

I disagree that is what the fans want. I am sure they rather see a fast clean game with tons of skill. The NHL is just run by neanderthals. NFL and NBA made rules to enhance offensive production and protect it star players. NHL does the opposite.

Wouldn’t be a McDavid thread without you Dick Beddoes-ing it up with Crosby.

McDavid has to start wowing again or he will be viewed as a playoff choke.

I saw a couple plays where he played conservative off the rush and I really don't remember seeing that all season - he's always been attack, attack, attack. He needs to get out of his head and play his speed an instincts again.

I can't really hate on Connor/Leon for their team being down 2-0. Smith has done his part, but otherwise there are 10 other forwards and 6 defencemen that are paid to produce as well.

And this all may be a moot point if they come back to Edmonton and take the next two. So kind of early to be labeling anyone as chokers, but no doubt they will be facing some harsh criticism, at least some of it justified, if the Oilers don't turn this series around.

Stanley Cups are not won by depth. They’re won by star players who actually perform. The Oilers are perfectly capable of winning a Cup IF McDavid and Draisaitl perform.

The team lacks depth beyond them. Surround them with a halfway-decent supporting cast and suddenly the "underachieving" label will disappear.

Playing two star players 25 minutes each only accounts for 1/6th of the 300 possible skater-minutes in a regulation game.
