Where are McDavid and Draisaitl when it matters?

You forgot that Klefbom is a top 2 defenseman and RNH is a great 2 way player!

Also, Yama and Pulja have taken immense strides forward this year.

It's apparently a deep team.

And simultaneously

A 2 man team.

Incredible.

Klefbom has missed the entire season + playoffs, and may have to retire due to a shoulder injury.

Puljujarvi has been the best forward on the Oilers these playoffs so far. Yamamoto was great last season but has done f*** all this year

RNH sucks

Orr, Howe, Crosby, Lemieux, even Gretzky all suffered playoff defeats while still in their primes. But they all won multiple Cups anyways. As you say, this is a team game and depth + talent+ strategy will trump one or two generational talents. McDavid will get his Cup(s), just not this year.

No other team in the NHL has even one player as good as McDavid. Arguably, the same can be said about Draisaitl (although MacKinnon would give him a run for his money). But when you go up and down the line-up, the Jets are the better team. The series isn't over yet, but instead of blaming McDavid, credit should be given to the way the Jets have played. And unlike the Sportsnet pouters, non-calls have gone both ways (this isn't directed at your post, but in so many other posts in other threads as well... oh, and at Cassie Campbell and Ron Maclean).
Agreed on all points. People hate bringing up other sports analogies on here but Dan Marino is arguably at top 10 QB of all time and never got a ring. Can't do it yourself.

He's still almost a point per game in his playoff career. Obviously that doesn't match the gaudy totals he's been putting up the last few seasons, but he'll get there. He still hasn't actually played all that many playoff games, so he's probably still got a few things to learn/adjust to - it really is a different game in the playoffs.

9 points in 15 games is no where good enough for McDavid

He gets paid 12.5 million dollars against the cap

There are a lot of things to dislike about this poor roster construction and depth of this Edmonton roster and it's not like Winnipeg is blowing the doors of Edmonton - a couple of different bounces and the narrative may be more like "Edmonton is able to win close games even when the top guys are not clicking at 100%".

So with all that as a base line - McDavid and Drai are absolutely not above criticism at this point and they are certainly not playing with the type of leveled up drive and physical intensity that define playoff hockey. Criticizing them is not saying "they are overrated schmucks". McDavid is the best player in the league, full-stop and Drai is up there in the top tier. They have lit the last few regular seasons on fire. But nobody with eyes can watch playoff hockey and not understand there is a difference in style, forechecking pressure, defensive scheming and physicality. It's all on these guys they can bring the absolute best of their games to the playoff tournament.

And they can. And they most likely will at some point. Heck, they could blow the doors off the Jets in the next few games and nobody would be surprised. But they aren't kids anymore...their whole "well they lack experience and are still learning and their team sucks and yadda yadda yadda" - it's starting to fall on deaf ears. These guys are hockey gods...what they've shown so far doesn't cut it in regards to their very own standards. Pointing that out doesn't make you anti-McDavid. Nobody knows that what they've shown so far isn't good enough more than Edmonton fans themselves. They more than anybody expect more from the dynamic duo.

Fact is that McDavid and Draisatl (especially McDavid) are so good that they cover the biggest flaw of the Oilers: lacks of good depth.
But once a team commit to stop them, they can kind of declaw the Oilers.

That's how the Habs had success againt the Oilers: Julien/Ducharme threw Danault at McDavid.

The Oilers are a couple of B or C players of being actually really good, but I think that, despite their records, they are the 4th best team in the North.
If they can get rid of some bad contracts and getting good depth tho, they could do a lot of damage in the future.

Just as threads about Crosby being over the hill are dumb so is this one!! Can't supposed hockey fans enjoy all the talent in the league during the playoffs and have normal discussions without stupid posts showing ignorance and laziness just to stir nonsense up.

Yes, I know this is HF!!

How about we watch the series to the finish before making these type of threads?

For all i know they both put up 3 points in the next game.

Let's just close the forum until Finals are over and then discuss what happened weeks ago :help:

I mean it's both...they need to be better and Edmonton's roster construction and usage is poor. I'd be hoping that Tippett tries do mix things up and shuffle the roster up a bit but I wouldn't hold my breath. When guys like Archibald and Khaira are playing 15 minutes a night and a blueline with too many absolute stiffs - there's no imagination or outside the box thinking going on. Not to mention RNH has regressed into an absolutely useless player. Completely ineffective offensively and absolutely charmin soft. If I'm an Oilers fan I pray they just let him walk this off-season. I can't imagine watching him play this year and thinking to myself "yeah, more of that please".

So far McDrai need to find that playoff gear they still seem to be giving a regular season efforts I see no real urgency in their game and hardly any second effort! Jets are doing a real good job giving them no space snd time McDrai going to have to fight for every inch of ice out there and elevate their 5 on 5 games they can’t just produce on the PP or 4 on 4!

Does this push McDavid out of the top 5 best players in the league?

Pretty long list of players I’d take above him when the games start to matter.

Think it’s time to put Drai and McD to separate lines
McDavid trying to make fancy plays in the POs
Does not work against tight checking teams.

McDavid is the most explosive, talented player in hockey. It doesn't translate to cups however. Those are team and leadership accomplishments. Will he win a cup some day? I would think so, but he needs to gain experience in what it really takes to win a cup. First it is a commitment to be the best player over 200 feet, not just 90.

you’d trade your entire team for McDavid.

Also for hockey fans, y’all sure forget that 66% of the game McDavid is on the bench and not much he can do.

try blaming all the average at best players who get put in better positions to succeed when teams focus all their energy on Drai and McDavid.

Marino did make it to the Superbowl and his offense put up a ton of points. My favorite QB of all time even though I am a Steelers fan. I really don't see the comparison with the sports. In football you are not playing both offense and defense like in hockey. Marino could put up 40 points and still lose because his team gave up 41 points.

Marino was a much better talent than Brady but didn't have the team around him. I think that part is the same with McDavid. Kind of like the Pens when Mario started in the league. If Mario had Gretzky's team when he first came in the league he probably hits 250 points. When the Pens finally built a team around Mario he already had a debilitating back injury and couldn't even lace his own skates before games. He still helped lead them to 2 Cups but was a shell of his late 80's self. Mario with that bad back and a day after missing a quarter of the season because of cancer treatments he still had 160 points in only 60 games. Imagine what a healthy Mario would of done with those teammates. Mario had 199 points playing on a line with Rob Brown who was a career minor league player in his prime years and Bob Errey who was more like a 3rd line player. As in all sports it matters who you are surrounded by. That 80's Oilers team was an all-star team. Unfortunately for McDavid he is more in the Mario situation to start his career. Hopefully he stays healthy and can still be able to be at his best if and when the Oilers surround him with a good team.

I didn't see game 1, they looked a bit listless in game 2. Wouldn't make any big judgements yet though. Winnipeg has also done a good job at clamping down on both of them.

Aren't the Jets missing two top 6 players right now? Crazy how a team that didn't have that great of a record and missing 2 of their better players still has more depth than the Oilers. That just shows how far away they are of a Championship type team.

He has 18 in 19 in the playoffs. Obviously not exceptional, but decent numbers for 99% of the league.

If you count the covid cup play-ins sure. The Oilers "missed the playoffs" but McDavid got point totals toward his playoff stats... i don't even count that season tbh

but in actual legit playoff games McDavid has 9 points in 15 games (and only two at even strength)

I said this when McDavid was blowing the doors off of Vancouver in the race to the 100 point mark and people were speculating if this current version of McDavid has surpassed Crosby in his prime. True greatness comes when you are able to combine ridiculous point totals in service of team success, so as amazing as those regular season numbers are, it's still a work in progress.

Still not good enough for a generational talent like 97 also do those totals include the play ins from last year? Hard to take those as serious playoff points even though the league says they are

If he had terrible stats in those play-in rounds I'm sure people would include those games.
