Where are McDavid and Draisaitl when it matters?

Took Ovie and some ridiculously stacked teams 13 years to get over the hump and shake the leadership crap after years of first and second round exits. Guy is only 24 and people are talking like he's done nothing but disappoint repeatedly in the playoffs over his career when he really doesn't have much of a playoff career at all. McDavid has 19 total playoff games to date and has 18 points and it's pretty frequently said that two players carry the whole team. Of his two prior runs one was as a sophomore and they were a hair away from the WCF and the other was the covid cup so it's not like he's never helped his team succeed either. People can compare all they want and talk about how he's not a leader and blah blah blah. That doesn't mean it has any weight or makes any sense.

If by the end of his career he still hasn't lead a team to a cup then this stuff actually has merit.
There can be blame placed on OV for the Caps failures this past decade, although the Caps were quite unlucky to lose so many game 7s, but in his prime he was an absolute terror in the playoffs. I felt like he was a threat anytime he was on the ice.

It must be eating and gnawing at him inside that he hasn't scored a single point. He's a super competitive guy.

McDavid was actually ok this night. Created some chances and he could have ended up with 2 points.

That being said i still can't get my head around people not understanding how the flawed his stats is from this season. I remember in 2012-2013 when eastern teams went for a long road trip and faced Kings, SJ, Ducks etc. Teams that actually played hard and had great defence. There is no way McDavid gets 105 pts in 56 games in a season like that.

He needs to adapt his game in the playoffs. If they lose vs Jets it doesn't matter if he scores some points. Massive underachivement for him and it really puts his season in perspective.

McDavid is an incredible player; but he needs to learn how to play playoff hockey. In the playoffs you get far more clutch and grab go uncalled and teams will strategically plan for specific players from the outset.
In the regular season a team will try to shut down McDavid but will generally stick to their more general team strategy. When the playoffs come around the teams change their entire mindset; they will now look to erase McDavid and Draisital by any means. Even if it means literally sacrificing your top line's offensive output to do it. It's no longer a long term play, its a short term one.

5+4=9 in the 15 actual playoff games. The rest of the points came in pre-playoffs against the worst team in the division, the story of this season too really. By the same age Ovechkin was 15+15=30 in 21 games.

The Caps were loaded offensively though, you couldn't just play the Caps and throw your entire defence at stopping Ovechkin. The Jets are playing a full on trap and basically their offence has gone to crap in the process too but they're eeking by with just enough.

If the Oilers actually had a 2nd line they would be up 2-0 in the series, but given they don't Maurice is 100% doing the right thing for Winnipeg, throwing everything at the McDavid line and turning the series into a full on grind.

One big reason is their efficiency on the PP and lack there of in the playoffs.

Rules change, whether refs want to admit it or how, there is obstruction, clutch and grab, hooking, etc and nothing gets called. Most penalties I've seen in the playoffs this year are players accidentally flipping the puck over the boards.

If you take away the Oilers PP, they are not nearly as effective as a team.

That said, they did have 3 power plays tonight and were not able to generate anything. They looked bad tonight on the PP.
This is actually not true, playoffs have the same amount or even slightly more pp opportunities as regular season. The difference is that little things don't get called, but at the same time teams play much harder, which makes it harder for speedy skill player like McDavid

Even McDavid can’t win 1-on-3 or 4, who guard him strictly and play trap. It also helps when you have a former vezina winner who plays great.

Playoff matchups, when you’re a one line team you’re gonna get shut down. Happens every year.

Crosby has 1 goal in his past 11 playoff games.

Also Hellebuyck playing at a .985 SV% has something to do with it.

Crosby is also 33 and has 4 finals appearances, 3 cups and 2 Conn Smythe trophies. McDavid's currently at his peak.

I don't fully blame McDavid for his playoff struggles, the fact that the Oilers are so shallow makes it much more difficult for him, but he has absolutely been a dud in the playoffs so far.

I get that Crosby has had playoff success.

That said, the double standard with him and McDavid is absolutely hilarious. When Crosby goes games without registering a point everyone points to his defensive play and dominance on the ice. McDavid's been more dominant on both sides of the ice, generating tons of chances and playing well defensively.

I mean Crosby's also doing stuff like this:

And he doesn't have the luxury of playing with Leon Draisaitl, at least not right now. Rust has been horrid in the playoffs since 2018 and Guentzel looks injured out there.

If they get swept here and don’t really produce, it will be fair label them chokers.

who would have thought that Jets - Habs could be a thing.

No, it doesn’t. What it does invalidate your post is this false narrative that Zetterberg shut down Crosby and was this world beater. Actually back in 2008 SCF, Zetterberg had 2 ES points to Crosby’s 3... Zetterberg might have shut Crosby down, but Crosby shut him down too... Wings insane depth came to the rescue...

Tippet is trying to kill Draisaitl. He’s out there every two shifts. A playoff shift is taxing enough, being exposed to it for half the game will drain you.

I’m sure he’s not complaining and he loves being out there all the time but Tippett needs to.... manage his team. What a concept. These aren’t quality minutes, they’re minutes being played by a great player that can only give so much energy.

9pts in 15 playoffs games for McDavid (against actual playoffs teams).

4pts at even strength in those 15gms.
Thank you. This isn't just about these two games. He didn't elevate his game last year nor in 2017 or whatever year that was. Drai at least had a monster playoffs that first year getting 16 points in 13 games then 6 points in 4 games last year.
