Protecting Samsonov is most important, but protecting the others is also important and since there's no reason we can't protect them all, that's what we do.

Well there is a reason you can't protect them all.

The reason is somebody needs to play the next 3 games, that means somebody has to risk injury.

But that person doesn't need to be Samsonov

They are able to play a roster larger than the 23 max because they are so good at managing the cap, that's impressive for a team in "cap hell".

I am not sure you have a good grasp on how the cap works, but lots of teams have played a man down (Colorado a lot last year), we took a calculated risk in a nothing game to allow the most flexibility moving forward.

Toronto managed to significantly improve the roster at the trade deadline and still have room for Knies. Toronto maximized and leveraged every part of the cap guidelines to the fullest. That’s exactly what you want to see a competitive team do year in and year out.

As fans we gotta give credit to the management team for that.

I'm talking about playing someone back to back. Earlier you said we could play Murray or Woll back to back but there's no need to do that to anyone.

Boston is playing without Taylor Hall for the remainder of the season due to not having Cap room, even though he's been healthy for 2 weeks.

......... but I understand that won't support some narratives here, so I will just say I'm looking forward to having Knies signed and seeing this young man's future as a Leaf.

I am also eagerly looking forward to finishing these meaningless remaining games with no injuries (fingers crossed).

Gotta feel for the kid right now. So close. Perhaps that bad taste in his mouth will light a fire in him if he signs and suits up for the Buds in these last few games. That’s what I’m hoping anyway.
He's gna fit like a glove with the big team.

No points and losing in spectacular fashion is on brand lol

I am sure I have a decent grasp, maybe not perfect. Just because someone else dies worse does not justify our position. Most everyone was looking forward to Knies debut, now as a result of cap issues that is unlikely, even with a no charge goalie.
The issue starting by digging Murray....big mistake.

"I'm still in shock about [the game], I really don't know what's going on," Knies said. "But once it settles in I'll probably start talking to people."

Can’t imagine the emotion of being that close. Didn’t even get a chance to hit the ice in OT. He’s gone back to Minnesota to let things settle. That said, it’s highly unlikely things get done in time for tomorrow’s game. Probably looking at a practice and a game later in the week.

I know there are some knowledgeable people on this site about NCAA rules and agents.

Few years ago, I heard they permittted a representative to be allowed, but not an agent.

Not sure if they could have discussed contracts or not, but we've read they can fit him in for this year, but not with performance bonuses?

So what are the odds, he'd earn a performance bonus next year?

On the other hand, if he can burn a year by signing now, he could hit free agency a year earlier.

If he were my kid, I'll tell him sign right now, but I'm probably more fiscally conservative than others who might tell him otherwise.

The No performance bonus part seems odd to me.

I thought teams can exceed the cap when performance bonuses are accounted for and the cap impact is deferred the following season after the bonuses were incurred.

I honestly think he's just using this loss as an excuse and he really doesn't want to play for the Leafs.

you have to have room to account for the possible bonuses under the cap ... it is the reason sandin got called up before liljegren ... lily had bonuses, sandin did not .... could not fit lily under the cap

They can sign Knies to a max contract... what are you talking about?

Fun fact Dubas was Hymans "representative" for a period of time

Is Knies stalling?

He's a young guy whose team just went through an absolutely horrible loss. He probably just needs a day or so to let things sink in. I can see him emotionally not necessarily wanting to sign the next day and then have to sit on a plane with all your ex teammates...

He'll get back to Minnesota, have a good talk with his defacto agent/advisor and then will sign. Ultimately as a guy who wants to make hockey his career, he'll do what's best for his advancement in that. He's NHL ready - and his family/agent know this

Performance bonuses transfer over to the following year. It has nothing to do with his cap hit.

Capfriendly has given a path, which was why Woll wasn't playing... Simmonds down -> Knies signed -> Woll up on an emergency basis...

Agreed, nothing to do with the cap...

I don't think you need room to accommodate bonuses, but it does change the way you accrue cap space- which is a non factor at this point
