When does Zibanejad sign, and for how much?

2 years 4.5 mill

I originally was clamouring for an extended contract, somewhere around 5×7 years. The more i think about it, is there is NO guarantee he will be affluent in a 1c role that we are wanting him to be. That contract would be worthy and a good contract for the Rangers......but if he is nothing more than a capable 2c then that might be too much. Sign him to the above and let him PROVE he is worth more.

And if he does prove he's worth more then in two years we're screwed, because he'll be wanting a deal with length (at age 28) and probably money in the $7M+ range. So going short term is a big gamble. Hell, even if he DOESN'T take off, in 2 years when he's UFA he'll probably command more on the open market than what we could get him for now.

5 years at $5.2M or so and call it a day. He's worth that based on his current production (according to the precedent set by other contracts) and it could end up being a relative bargain.

Ideally a short contract is great so we know where we have Zib the next couple of years.

I'd be happy anywhere from 3-5 years.
Under 3 years is too short.
Over 5 years is too long.

We have to be careful that we do not pay top dollar for what we hope a player might be instead of paying the player based on what he has been so far. 4.5mill-5mill for a guy who was a second line center seems pretty reasonable to me.

Like I said earlier, if we go with a short contract and he really steps up then he'll command a ton of money in free agency. A two year deal takes him to UFA status and would be terrible. Even if he maintains this 50-ish point level of play during the next two years he'll still command well over $5M on the open market, plus he'll want term and will be two years older.

You buy out a few of those free agency years now with the RFA years at the front keeping down the cost. You get the player for five or so years at an affordable number.

There is zero chance Zib gets a 2 year deal. The contract would end at the first possible moment when he can become UFA. The Rangers never offer contracts like that. They always ensure that the contract either ends with RFA status or they buy 1 or more UFA years.

The only way he gets a 1 year deal is if he goes to arbitration or they agree on a 1 year deal right before the hearing to avoid it. I think that's extremely unlikely as well.

So the contract will be a minimum of 3 years, with I think 4 or 5 years being most likely.

We have to remember that part of the reason Ottawa traded him for Brassard is they couldn't work out a long term deal and liked the cost certainty that Brass' contract provides. Anyone expecting him to sign another bridge deal is fooling themselves

Forget expecting another bridge deal. Why on Earth would anyone want that?

Maybe I used the term a bit loosely, but I'd imagine part of the reason he was traded was because he was looking for a 6+ year contract extension from the sens, not one of these 3-4 year deals everyone is hoping he finds

4 years @ 5.2m for Zibby is my guess. He can cash in again on a 4 or 5 year deal at 30 and our prospect centers will likely be ready for a larger role at that point

Oh I totally understood what you meant. I was just speaking to the fact that a few people have suggested a 2-year deal for him, which would be a bridge to UFA and would be insanity. That's what I'm incredulous over.

Similar to the Palat deal? Could also seeing him get a little under 5 million and maybe 5 years.

That sounds fair. Tyler Johnson got 5 mill but he has had a 72 point season and a 29 goal season. I would hope for somewhere in the 4.7-5 mill range. 4-5 years works for me as well.

The asks from the players and the team has tweeted by Elliot Friedman 2 days in advance so we'll get the deets on the asks by Sunday morning.

The second Stepan got traded, in Zib's mind, he became the teams 1C, and is probably asking at least $500K more per yr, probably causing the delay in signing. He has more leverage than he did before...just my thought.
