When does Zibanejad sign, and for how much?

Why is it concerning? He is Mika's agent.

Because he's inexperienced in contract negotiations and arbitration hearings. Maybe it has nothing to do with anything. But consider that this is his first representation, and it's the first time the Rangers have gone to an arbitration hearing in 10 years. They have shown a tendency to avoid going through the actual hearing, yet here they are.

Exactly.

If he was just negotiating a contract, that's one thing. Still not great for a rookie "agent" with no support system, but fine.

However, an arbitration hearing is a different animal. That's like representing yourself in court.

He may or may not be an issue. But the fact he's involved is concerning, and likely a mistake on Mika's part. Especially for an arbitration hearing.

None of us know his training or experience. If he is well prepared and fair than it is not a problem at all. If he is unprepared with little to no experience in the writing or legality of legal contracts than it may complicate the process. It also adds a personal connection. That may or may not be a factor. Since we are not in the room we can only speculate. Hopefully it is a non issue but we probably would not have this discussion if he stayed with the Meehan group.

Done. Both sides should be reasonably satisfied with this deal.

Good for the agent - got a nice deal for his half-bro and avoided arbitration.

Nazem Kadri (the natural comparable) makes $4.8 million per season, so the AAV (for me) is disappointing. Five years is fine, until the organization trades him in two years.

Anyway, welcome back Mika!

Not a fan of that AAV but term is fine.

I hoped for 4.8-5.1mill but I'm so glad it is a 5 year deal not a 6-7 year deal. That was my primary concern. I have had discussion after discussion about the need to limit our deals to 5 years for no elite players. Well done Gorton!
