When does Zibanejad sign, and for how much?

I care way more about refusing to bundle RFA/UFA years on a player you are counting on to be your 1C.

That is how "Stepan is overpaid" memes start.

No evidence that Gorton is unreasonable or handling Zib badly. I do wonder if this contract would be done if Zib was still with Meehan Sports.

Ugh. Was counting on an early morning 5 x $5.5MM deal. Don't like that they're actually in the hearing.

Who the F hires their half-brother former mediocre player as an agent? I worry he's running the risk of poisoning the relationship between the team and their 1C in an attempt to prove what a badass agent he is in his first negotiation.

Hopefully I'm wrong...

maybe the coffee machine is broken and arbitration hasn't started yet and they're banging out a contract. This is sure an odd spot to be taking your 1C to arbitration over a few hundred thousand buckaroos. I am going to still guess that the number of years is far apart that the additional money for more years cannot bridge the difference.

I feel like it's not $$$ that's the problem here, but term and clauses (in regards to a long-term deal being made)

This is always a wild card. If the "agent" doesn't know what to expect and what is reasonable, things can go south real quick. There are a lot of things that you might use a rookie agent for, arbitration and RFA contract negotiation is generally not one of those things. At least Mika's camp gets an extra 5 minute for closing statements.

I feel its more likely his half brother, who we'll call Clownboots. I don't know the guy, and Mika is as much as fault as he is, but you don't throw an amateur into contract negotiations. Mika should have never offered, and his brother should have never accepted.

Arbitration makes this potentially worse because from what you hear, the teams job is to downplay the accomplishments of the player so you need a thick skin. That's what you have a professional agent for. A guy and his brother aren't likely to have a thick skin when the Rangers start listing all Mika's flaws.

Yea the moment he hired an amateur I knew we were in trouble lol

Yeah, I agree. I still don't know why he hired his half-bro for this.

Smart move by Mika. He is the Rangers top center. He is much better than Hayes and Miller who is more of a winger. He is going to get lots of pp time and will put up alot of points. He has all the leverage with stepan traded.

Next year, the Rangers must resign him and he will likely be coming off a career year. He will have even more leverage and be only 1 year away from ufa with arbitration rights. From Mika's pov, it is a smart move.

I think most players don't do it because their agent directs them toward the lower offer to avoid arbitration so the agent insures his salary. For the agent, the risk of getting fired is not worth the additional money that could come his way in the future.

There are always exceptions but sadly in pro sports when a brother/father/etc are hired things do sometimes get overly complicated. Zibs was with the Meehan group. They have worked well with the Rangers in the past.

I don't think we'll see any bad stuff come out of the arbitration hearing like we did for Avery. They'll mention Mika's injury and being cautious, but I can't see what else they'll say.

They could pull up two weeks of clips before his injury where Zibs could not handle a puck. It was like his stick was playing hot potato with the puck. Arbitration can be pretty messy. The team wants Zibs. If Zibs wants to be here then reasonable folks should be able to come to an agreement.

lmao really? we're blaming Zibanejad going to arbitration on him hiring his half-brother as his agent?

I can't post here anymore.

I don't think it helped avoiding arbitration. Probably not the main reason, but I don't think it's helping him.

I think the anxiety is saying "all we're saying is this rookie non-agent background agent negotiating a contract for the first time is negotiation a difficult arbitration RFA negotiation and now going into arbitration against NYR brass could be a curve ball."

There is no way for us to know if his agent is an issue or not. It was just speculating.

He may or may not be an issue. But the fact he's involved is concerning, and likely a mistake on Mika's part. Especially for an arbitration hearing.
