When does Zibanejad sign, and for how much?

Tampa: city tax + state tax = 0%
NYC: city tax + state tax = 12.696%
New York Burbs (except Yonkers): state tax only = 8.82%

Now you're looking at the expense side. I think it's fair to level the playing field on the income side. What players do with their take home is at their discretion but they have no discretion in how much a city or state takes away, which leads to a massive competitive advantage for teams like Tampa

If it goes to arbitration, do they have to sign that if he is going to play for NYR next season or can they agree on another(longer than 1 year) contract later?

they can sign him at the price for one year, or they can waive him

all other options for 2017-18 are off the table after the decision

The due diligence comment is not meant as an insult, to me this is the job of the front office and what they get paid for. They should consider the many variable I previously listed, and many more I didn't think of. I just believe they shouldn't constrain themselves for philosophical or principal reasons.

5 year deal is good for Zib, 6 years wouldn't be terrible either. I'm not debating that.

Regarding Haglin, I don't think for a second he was left unprotected because he isn't a good player. Lots of good players got exposed including Lindberg, Raanta by us. Sometimes role players fit a system better than on other teams, they are worth more for one team and less on another.

Nashville is killing it with their resignings, they've been doing that for a few years. Do you think they regret Josi, Ekholm, Ellis all locked up thru their prime? Same case for many of their young forwards now too. Sometimes you just need to take a page out of someone else's playbook.

They absolutely are......doing it the right way. Only thing is......you have to HAVE those type young players, seemingly they have done it within 2 years, the Rangers have been doing it, here and there. They haven't lost players that are "killing it" on other teams, they have just kept the wrong players for too long.

I would much rather have paid Dan and Marc 7mil for just a 3 or 4 year contract.
I know, I know......cap space and all, and it doesn't work that way, but you know what I mean. Getting stuck in long term deals that don't work out is worse than overpaying for a short term.

Let's not forget that Tennessee is a state with a very favourable tax-rate of 6% on stocks only. That makes it easier for kids like Arvidsson to sign for a lower AAV.

He wants what, $5.2M for 1 year, and then hopes to get a $6M/6Y deal after that, right?

That would be a total of $41.2M... However he also is taking an injury/down year risk, so the Rangers will probably compromise with a $5.7M/6Y Right Now...

It's more than I wanted but it's doable.

If that's what happens then they are absolutely buying out Staal. They're going to need the cap space

Can someone clue me in a little? I haven't paid attention to cap space (every dollar) but I know we had some room. Why did we have to wait to sign Zbad and THEN possible buy out Marc......personally, I don't think we will this year. AV needs his baby blanket. Already lost his blue one.

Is it purely because of numbers? We have an approx. # in our heads for Zbad, so if they were going to buy out Staal, why did they wait? Okay, call me stupid, but it just isn't that cut and dry for me. Thanks.

Depending on what other moves they want to make after they sign ZBad (say...Bozak), then they will likely have to buy out Staal.

ZBad signing makes the cap a lot clearer.

There is no need other than to free up a roster spot. As of today we have $8.4 million in cap space this year before signing Zbad.

It really doesn't make a lot of sense to buyout Staal right now, but the board has to discuss something in the summer, I guess.

Not surprised at all...

Who is representing Mika in the hearing? Must be someone with some kind of experience besides his bro, right?

Because the 2nd buy-out window only opens after the arbitration cases are settled

Even after the hearing ends, the team and player can still come to a deal before the decision is handed out.

Sssssssssssshhhhhhhhhh don't say that. The narrative of NYR being the only team to mishandle their assets and go to arbitration hearings seems to be gaining steam. Don't stop it! :D

Ha - where does this stuff even come from?

Well. I'm annoyed, but for different reasons.

Team has no problem overpaying B. Smith by a 'couple of hundred K', then have the stubbornness to take Zibanejad, their 1C-elect, to arbitration over the same 'couple of hundred K'? (Assuming that the numbers given to the arbitrator are different than what is likely being thrown around in negotiations for a long-term deal).

Arbitration is an ugly process. I remember when Avery went through it that Sather called him a 'detriment to the team'. Sather was Avery's biggest backer in those days. Resurrected his career after Dallas. And still, the arbitration process got ugly.

According to the New York Post, the Rangers referred to Avery as "a reasonably effective player as well as a detriment to team," in a brief given to the arbitrator. Management also said "Avery is not a mature player. He plays, at times, like an individual rather than a member of a team," the newspaper reported.

"I have no idea what to say," Avery told the New York Post in an e-mail. "I don't know what this was about. I'm shocked."

Ha - where does this stuff even come from?

From people who think going to an arbitration hearing is the worst thing in the world and absolutely ruins things forever. And people who forget that a deal can still be reached before the arbitrator gives their verdict.
