Friedman:

Closing in on Friday’s 3pm ET trade deadline with a quickie blog for a Wednesday night.
According to multiple sources, the Carolina Hurricanes are doing their Mikko Rantanen due diligence, checking out potential returns as either a rental or with an extension — assuming he’s willing to sign anywhere before July 1.
Among the teams believed to be very interested are Toronto, Dallas and Los Angeles — although that’s a ridiculously incomplete list. Who wouldn’t want him at a $2.3 million cap hit, if Carolina retained 50 per cent of Rantanen’s salary. But, a trade return would be much better for the Hurricanes if Rantanen agreed to extend with a new team, something else everyone’s trying to determine.
There are teams willing to step up in exchange for long-term security.
If Carolina does not like the offers, they can keep the winger and make a run. But they have opened the door and we will see where this goes.

He's flat out playing himself out of some big $ with how bad he's been with Carolina. Of course, if he does go UFA, some jackass will pay him anyway.

If he turned down 100+ I’m sure he realizes other teams ain’t topping that so he isn’t worried about playing himself out of money

If he extends here reasonable cap hit give the canes what they want. Would be 3-4 pieces

I think it’s all about the money. Can’t blame him. With the cap going up I can see the Rangers making an offer.

Doesn't even have to be all about the money - he was in the Colorado organization for nearly a decade and the reports I've seen seem to indicate he was completely caught off-guard by the trade. He's gonna make bank on his next deal no matter what and has already pulled in $55M on his previous contract.

Carolina is a good landing spot in general, but he really doesn't owe them any loyalty just because they traded for him without talking to him or his agent ahead of time. I can understand Rantanen wanting to test the market at this point and I wouldn't blame him. He's going to be in high demand and the cap is going up so he can have his choice of just about any market and still pull in a very good salary.

I think that's particularly true since he was shocked by the trade. He probably felt there was a relationship built with Colorado, and if they could trade him, what real assurance does he have anywhere else? Better to go negotiate the best deal he can - in all ways: location, money, trade / movement protection, etc. No use just trusting someone else with your future.
