Confirmed with Link: Devils trade 2nd rounder and Herman Traff for Brian Doumilin

I guess their thinking was lachance and traff are similar players? Why pay a 2nd for retention when we have fricking 13M of cap space?

The payment for retention makes me think Fitz is cooking up something for someone pricey.

Maybe…maybe based on the retention, there is something bigger and better coming that might make this look better in the next 24 hours.

Maybe.

Why did we sweeten the pot to retain?

One plausible answer: retention wasn't optional.

If Anaheim was ready and willing to retain to increase the trade return, and there were other teams interested in acquiring Dumoulin with retention then the Devils would be bidding against other teams with retention included.

Once again, you all know this is clearly not going to be Fitz’s only move, right?

They’re in a playoff spot right now. The team has made the playoffs twice in 13 years. At a certain point, they just need to make the f***ing playoffs and stop worrying about the future, especially when it’s a draft pick that’s is likely never going to develop into an NHLer anyway.
That’s not exactly the selling point you think it is.

Of course Fitz is going to do something else cause it’d be even a higher level of moronic to burn one of our few actual forward prospects just to have the Ducks retain on the deal if we don’t then use the cap.

Anyway you slice it, this is a dumb trade. A 2nd and a FWD prospect just drafted and with some potential from an already barren prospect pool. Don’t want to hear any “seller’s market” crap. More proof that TF has no idea how to get value in trades.

Not sure if this is worse than the McPunchy trade.

I’m officially done for the year.

Noooooo! They even got to one of our most positive posters

There is no way the organization can make any move without it hurting.

We don't have much in terms of assets so anything we spend is going to be too much.

It's very simple. You either sit idle and watch the season go down the drain or you try to salvage it with what little you have...

Either scenario the pitch forks would be out...."paid too much" or "sat on his hands"....pick your bitch adventure.
Or we could have dealt Kovy and maybe Allen and a bum or two from the 3rd and 4th lines. Maybe even found a foolish GM and retained on Haula or Palat. Instead, we will waste assets that could have been used in the future for trades when we actually have a chance to do something in the playoffs.

I gave a like to this but I cannot imagine Pat Verbeek (or Tom Fitzgerald for that matter) grasping this.

So, team currently in a playoff spot just rolls over and dies? Not sure what type of message that sends to the rest of the team and any players around the league

The other thing I forgot about is that we can't trade our 2nd or our 3rd this year because the conditions on the Allen trade for last year haven't been resolved. So this pick has to be one of EDM's or WIN's
As I understand Allen should play 17 out of 19 games? And Markstrom is already playing.

His indecision all year last year while Jack was healthy and the team was getting "worst in a decade" goaltending was excused by this entire forum repeatedly saying "why trade for rentals? the window has just barely opened."

Now that Jack f***ing Hughes is out for the season you want him to make moves, "make the f***ing playoffs" and "STOP WORRYING ABOUT THE FUTURE"?

I'm going insane. I need a padded room. What the actual everloving F*CK

You do realize that it takes two to tango, right?

How many in season trades happen before February? Hint: not too many.

In the very real world we shouldn’t be buyers but I don’t think Fitz can say (when they’re in a playoff spot) that they’re selling / standing pat.

Just was never going to happen and it rarely ever does.

I'm not singling this post out and I'm guilty of it myself, but one line of argument on this forum that needs to go away is singling out a post and then accusing 'the board' of saying something that contradicts it. The forum is not an entity, it is composed of many people almost all of whom have different opinions. There can be a board consensus on things but there will always be several people disagreeing with that.

You all cherish picks and prospects way to much. I know this has been said before but still.

Our Core forward group (Jack Nico Bratt and Timo) is signed and young, we have L Hughes Casey Nemec and Silayev on the defense still coming or already here. Lenny and Grits coming soon for the forwards. The fact remains the picks aren't anywhere near that important for the next little bit.

YOU MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! You don't just give up on a season because Jack Hughes got hurt or Dougie is a banged up. Once your in the playoffs anything can happen. We have all seen goalies carry teams in the playoffs, we have seen random guys step up and become stars in the playoffs.

The market is always different, retention of salary cost more at times then others. Id much rather be working toward a playoff spot with a 3rd parking of Dumoulin (+2 on a terrible defensive team btw) and Nemec or Casey then Casey and Nemec, one of which is playing on his off side.

Like it, don't like it, whatever, I am on the side of making the playoffs.

Maybe I am not as overreactionary(did I just make up a word?) on this thread because I expected a crazy market this TDL with the amount of buyers vs sellers and with the caveat that Toms job is on the line (IMO). So I have been prepared for some wild moves

I don't even think this is all that wild. They have been saying they wanted depth D even before Siegs got hurt.

Traff is a nothing prospect. 2nd feels steep but it's not all that much in the end.

Thankfully it appears that will be a 3rd going to Montreal. Allen would need to play 17 of the last 19 to hit the 40 game mark.
