My biggest concern when it comes to Kopi is the drop in his shots. He's far more effective being the shooter than defaulting to Gaborik.

Kopitar was overpaid for several years of his second contract since he didn't sign a bridge. Unfortunately ,from the sounds of it, Brisson wants that to continue in the final years of his deal instead of of taking one for the team

How was he overpaid ? Every year since he signed the contract he was Kings leading scorer

Anyone catch NHL Live today? Eliott Friedman was discussing the contract and said it was inching closer. He didn't believe the Kings or Kopitar would walk away.

You can see the segment on NHL.com and click on the NHL banner half way down. It's listed under the Elliott Friedman discusses NHL rumors section.

Also mentioned LA has a very good chance at the All Star game, as Toronto bid on the Jan 1 outdoor game, All Star game, draft, and all GM and owners meetings. He said no way Toronto gets the laundry list of wishes.

Hw was making more than several players that were better than him. The Kings were paying for potential.

Got it, thanks.

Anecdotal but I do remember a lot of trepidation when he first signed it. It was a 'holy ****, THAT much money?' type of deal at the time, though most of us hoped he grow into it and it would become a bargain.

Idk. I thought Kopitar was the best player to wear a Kings jersey since Palffy as early as his sophomore year. Kid had 77 points as a 20 year old on an absolute **** Crawford team.

Kopitar wasn't overpaid or underpaid on his second contract. He was paid exactly what you should pay your 21-25 year old Number one center.

Kopitar's second contract, is EXACTLY what you do, in the cap era. Lombardi should have done it with Toffoli as well, that's going to cost Lombardi millions.

You give bridge deals to someone like A-Mart/Pearson, guys you don't know what you have. Toffoli is a core player, legit scorer in this league.

That was a bit out of his control once he didn't buy out Richards last year. He was kind of forced to give Toffoli a bridge deal since he didn't know what impact Richards was going to have on the cap.

That most likely means no Lucic.

Lombardi can't position the pieces on the chessboard exactly where he wants them like he used to anymore. All the pawns have already been moved. The knights are in the middle. He did the king/rook thing. Now it's which pawn do you sacrifice for the greater good. Do you use the bishop to take their queen, even though it's going to cost you your own queen?

Another good point...

I know people have talking about re-signing Lucic but I think that was an “all in†move to take one more shot at the Cup before some more moves have to be made. I’ve said this before but that was essentially a deadline deal done in the summer time. It’s going to be hard to re-sign Lucic and I’m not sure they should give him the money and term he likely wants with the impending Kopitar contract, Brown’s deal and Gaborik’s (to a lesser degree). We’re stuck with Brown and Gaborik already and Kopitar’s deal is going to happen.

Exactly, here is the deal with it.

What would you rather have, a 29 year old Lucic making 6-6.8 million with 5-6 years left on his contract ?

Or a 24 year old Toffoli making 6-6.8 million with 7-8 years left on his deal ?

You can't have both, with Brown/Gabo making their due, and Kopitar making 9.5+ million.

You let Lucic walk after the season, unless he signs for really cheap (which he won't do). That way you have space for Pearson(if he breaks out)/Toffoli when they need more money, and term.

400,000 AAV isnt really much to complain about. its not like Kopitar was making 2-3 million more

Regardless, examples of better players who were making less money than Kopitar at the time

Let's start with Patrick Kane. Same with Henrik Sedin

Kane isn't a good comp. Kane's second contract was only 5 years. Kopitars 2nd contract was 7 years. Effectively, the Kings bought out extra years of free agency.

Here's how the two stack up (Kopi is older, so the contracts don't align perfectly):

Year Kane Kopi
2010 6.5 6
2011 6.0 6.4
2012 6.0 6.5
2013 6.5 7.5
2014 6.5 7.5
2015 13.8 7.7

When they got Lucic, it became a full roster again. There was no room for someone like Mersch. If I had to guess today, I'd say Mersch is where Lucic is this time next year. King becomes a UFA after next year, and then Kempe takes his spot on the roster. If it could even be that linear.

They're just at the point where some of these young guys will have to make the roster, but not just as filler like Andreoff last year, and Weal this year. I don't see Lombardi dealing anyone that's been part of the winning, that doesn't ask out(like Bernier, Gagne, and Jones). He'll let guys go as free agents, but look how long he held onto Richards.

I agree, Lucic is a let's go for 3 in 5 shot. The 2017 1st rounder isn't going to do much in a trade this far away from that draft day. If they don't win it this year, then there's no topping the Hawks, and so the pressure to go all in maybe diminishes a bit. Get a little more time to reset the deck.

I don't know who it is, and I'm glad I'm not the one that has to make the decision, but SOMEONE is coming off the books. I mean, I think we often forget about them since we haven't had them all year, but King and Greene will return sometime, then we'll have roster redundancies--and that's before a guy like Mersch.

Do you mean roster or salary cap this year (or next year)?

For roster, we're only carrying 22. King can come back without any movement and Forbort can go to Ontario.

With regards to salary cap, neither King nor Greene is on LTIR, so they are both counting towards the cap currently. Nothing needs to be done.

Sorry, I didn't mean by sheer roster numbers/moves, I just mean in terms of actual playing spots. Who sits when King comes back? Does Mersch stay down all year? Are we just going to sit on weal all year? I feel like at least a forward has to go at some point in order to shed salary and a spot for Mersch...and if not for Mersch, maybe not, I guess.
