Hopefully he plays the way he did on team Canada and we don’t have to worry about this next year
He had is worst shooting% of his career this year despite a high number of slot shots. Assuming he plays the same way the results should be better.

Mitch doesn't understand just how grossly overpaid he is, he hit the jackpot when he schooled Dubas for that deal, highway robbery.............
At the time he was signing he "might" have been overpaid, but he certainly isn't now. Since he entered the league only Pastrnak and Kucherov have scored more points than him as a RW.

Kucherov signed his deal at 25 after hitting the 100 point plateau for the first time after a season of 85 points with two 60 point seasons before that.

Pasta signed his last deal at 21 after hitting 70 points with two seasons where he point up 26 and 27 (40 point paces) respectively. He now makes more than Marner.

Marner signed his deal at 22 after hitting 94 points with two seasons of 60+ before that. He might have been overpaid by $2M at the time of signing but he is definitely worth what he is making now.

All of the players that Pittsburgh traded away are easily moveable this summer and even moreso at the deadline. He could've tweaked the team and seen if some players bounced back and built their value back up. Instead he destroyed that team's future in one summer. It's like he learned ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This is the Marleau trade all over again, probably worse.

The trade pieces now stand like this:
Petry, 1x6.25
DeSmith, UFA
Granlund, 1x5
Ruuta, 1x2.75
2024 1st (14th overall)
2025 2nd

• Detroit traded for 2 YEARS of Petry at 50% retained, trading 1 year is nothing.
• Wennberg just got traded as a deadline rental (2.25 cap hit 50% retained) for a 2nd and 4th, Granlund is much better at the same price retained.
• Ruuta is a big depth D with 2 Cups of experience. Any playoff team would trade assets for him at 50%.

It would take one season and a half MAX for them to pad their cupboards for the future or a trade that would ACTUALLY help. Instead they lost good picks and jammed the team up while now allegedly trying to get younger. 🤣 Never mind the cap flexibility this would give them to take a contract on in return for picks.

There really needs to be a study on these Dubas fanboys.
The Kadri trade says it all.

Dubas is out to lunch. I think its the way he speaks. Clearly some Jedi mind trick action there.

Regular season assists (playing with the best goal scorer) is the only argument in his favour.

If he was overpaid when he signed (he was) and hasn't improved since (he hasn't, in fact he's gotten worse, especially in the playoffs when it's most important), how is he not still overpaid?

He hasn't gotten worse since he's signed. He's actually been remarkably consistent. Hence the scoring more points than all RW outside of two guys.

Per 82 game paces since signing the contract:
93
100
110
101
101

Eventually these guys figure it out in the playoffs. Tkachuk did once he got traded.

Wish we could move him out, but that will not happen.

However, if we signed Lindholm and bumped Tavares down to 3rd line, that would give us really good center depth.

Honestly unless he takes an outrageous discount I would let him walk. Thanks for the years, but we haven't done anything with him here and he is getting older and slower. Get younger.

His production in the regular season has remained constant, while his centre's has gone up. And if course you'll ignore to playoffs.

Tkachuk improved playing with better players. Mitch has already been playing with the best scorer.

Tkachuk has been playing with Bennett and Rodriques. Definitely not better than Lindholm and Gaudreau of two years ago.

endless rumors on Marner but barely nothing about what the teams planning on doing with our biggest issue which is Captain Mumbles , whether they trade or re-sign Mitch the most important move is getting rid of Tavares so why so quiet ?

People really need to prepare themselves for the overwhelmingly most likely result: that the leafs cannot make core changes until a year from now

Yeah, time will simply run down on the Marner and Tavares contracts. Change needs to happen but this might be an awkward transition year.

He's still an effective player who held up his end of the free agency deal he signed with Toronto. He's also got a full NMC, the captaincy, and has a young family that is very happy here - I understand the need to be ruthless, but you still have to treat people properly.
JT only earned that salary in his first year. He's been massively overpaid since

What's going on with Tavares? He's enjoying an early vacation (again).
