Curious as to what you guys would have done this free agency period and how different your teams would look compared to the actual.
Is Crouse RFA?Whether we like it or not we need a Crouse type to play top 6. I'd dump Kerfoot and Holl. Sign Sandin and play the kids.
Absolutely, although it's surprising how many aren't.Your fictional team with no constraints or opinions from players involved should always be better than a GM competing with 31 other teams.

I'm not against Samsonov/Murray I actually see some potential in that tandem but I'm surprised he couldn't beat a 3rd for Husso's rights
Still would have signed Samsonov
Trade Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Muzzin, Holl, Sandin, signed Copp, Chariot, Campbell and Husso, fire Dubas, Keefe and tank for Bedard
I’d like to think we would have just paid Campbell 5x5(which he was open to with the Leafs according to the media) before taking on Murray at a full cap hit and Kalgren as a backup. Despite the rumored tampering with Jack, he probably would have been open to it given his attitude about the team and he’s more of a sure thing than those options. Even at that cap hit I’m still on the fence as to whether I even like Murray more at 25% reduction. I’m ok with it because of the upside and term…but it’s still close.I try to imagine how that week must have unfolded for Dubas. I am sure he had lots of trade discussions in regards to adding a starting goalie and there were a few free agent netminders of interest.
Just hypothetical…(not saying this happened but how would we know)
Gibson doesn’t want to come to Toronto
Lou wants Nylander for Varlamov (or something ridiculous)
NJ won’t move Blackwood unless overpayment
Then within days…
Georgiev traded
Fleury resigns with Minnesota
Husso traded and signed
Campbell wants more than Dubas is willing to offer
Dubas needs not one but two NHL caliber goalies and the options are…
Kuemper
Comrie
Murray
Reimer (I assume he will be odd man out in San Jose)
Talbot
Bobrovsky (reports were Florida would retain 50%)
Jones
At this point nobody thought Samsonov wouldn’t be qualified by Washington (but I could be wrong. Can’t remember the timeline and if we acquired Murray before Washington announced Samsonov would be a UFA)
I think Kuemper was a long shot at best
Comrie would have been a nice addition but no guarantees he signs here as a free agent if our goalie circumstances were different
Murray was the only goalie was guaranteed Dubas could acquire
I don’t think we would want to roll with Reimer again
Talbot would have been a good stop gap but I don’t think we had a young goalie better than Gustavsson to send back
Dubas wasn’t going to be handcuffed with Bob even at 50%
Jones isn’t an NHL starting goalie anymore
Imagine if we didn’t do the Murray trade when we did and Dubas swung and missed on Comrie and Kuemper and Washington qualified Samsonov?? We might have Murray at the full cap hit with Kallgren/Woll as the backup.
Or we might be overpaying for a 1B/backup such as Allen, Korpisalo, Khudobin
I just think the way things fell Dubas was boxed in looking for a couple of goalies and I am happy with what we got.
Trade Muzzin for added cap space- sign Zadorov
I just feel Big Z can lay out a lot of bodies without getting injured compared to Muzzin and gives us that type of edge/dimension we could use on D imo. Like Lybushkin only bigger/meaner (and probably the same foot speed lol) but he checks off that stay at home old school defending type that leeps the oppositions heads up coming into our blueline. Plus it also puts Gio as the #3-4 d man for our 2nd line making Z our bottom 6 if we needed that type of option to mix and match pur D-men pecking order.Swapping a top pair dman for bottom pair dman is an interesting choice.
They had a second suitor. It was take it or move on.I probably would have waited out the Matt Murray situation a bit longer, and forced Ottawa's hand. The Senators might have bought him out, and if they didn't there probably would still have been a deal on the table if that's the direction they wanted to go.
If they waited long enough, they might have ended up with Talbot at a lower cap hit instead.
I think there were other options.
