Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Comtois/Crouse - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - NKA
Holmberg/Gaudette/Malgin/Anderson - McLeod - Bastian

Mo - Brodie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Giordano - Sandin
Schenn

Now this requires teams willing to trade Comtois/Crouse/McLeod/Bastian/Schenn... which doesn't seem likely.

Goalies... umm... I mean what's been available hasn't been great, or signed to contracts that I don't particularly like. I had hoped that Markstrom or Hellebuyck would shake loose, but that didn't happen.

Would have made a pitch for Talbot and went with Talbot/Samsonov. Try to Sign ZAR or Motte as well as one of Heinen, Donato, Milano. Trade Holl for picks.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - JT - Nylander
Engvall - Kerfoot - Heinen/Donato/Milano
ZAR/Motte - Kampf - NAK

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Liljregren
Gio - Sandin

Talbot
Samsonov

I try to imagine how that week must have unfolded for Dubas. I am sure he had lots of trade discussions in regards to adding a starting goalie and there were a few free agent netminders of interest.

Just hypothetical…(not saying this happened but how would we know)

Gibson doesn’t want to come to Toronto

Lou wants Nylander for Varlamov (or something ridiculous)

NJ won’t move Blackwood unless overpayment

Then within days…

Georgiev traded
Fleury resigns with Minnesota
Husso traded and signed
Campbell wants more than Dubas is willing to offer

Dubas needs not one but two NHL caliber goalies and the options are…

Kuemper
Comrie
Murray
Reimer (I assume he will be odd man out in San Jose)
Talbot
Bobrovsky (reports were Florida would retain 50%)
Jones

At this point nobody thought Samsonov wouldn’t be qualified by Washington (but I could be wrong. Can’t remember the timeline and if we acquired Murray before Washington announced Samsonov would be a UFA)

I think Kuemper was a long shot at best

Comrie would have been a nice addition but no guarantees he signs here as a free agent if our goalie circumstances were different

Murray was the only goalie was guaranteed Dubas could acquire

I don’t think we would want to roll with Reimer again

Talbot would have been a good stop gap but I don’t think we had a young goalie better than Gustavsson to send back

Dubas wasn’t going to be handcuffed with Bob even at 50%

Jones isn’t an NHL starting goalie anymore

Imagine if we didn’t do the Murray trade when we did and Dubas swung and missed on Comrie and Kuemper and Washington qualified Samsonov?? We might have Murray at the full cap hit with Kallgren/Woll as the backup.

Or we might be overpaying for a 1B/backup such as Allen, Korpisalo, Khudobin

I just think the way things fell Dubas was boxed in looking for a couple of goalies and I am happy with what we got.

I think I would have matched Kuemper's contract after ditching Mrazek. It's only 500K or so more than Murray's.

I would have moved Kerfoot for picks and matched Domi's contract.

Those look like the easy fixes to me on paper.

I'm not against Samsonov/Murray I actually see some potential in that tandem but I'm surprised he couldn't beat a 3rd for Husso's rights

Still would have signed Samsonov

Would have taken our second or our 3rd plus to get Husso but if he was at the top of our list along with Fleury, it might have been worth it.

Both Murray and Sam are risky. I mean Sens paid us to take Murray at 4.68m and Caps were happy to let Sam go for nothing. Soup/Mrazek were a safer bet last year and that went downhill fast.

Trade Marner, Tavares, Nylander, Muzzin, Holl, Sandin, signed Copp, Chariot, Campbell and Husso, fire Dubas, Keefe and tank for Bedard

No need to fire anybody if tanking for Berard. Get Bunting off top line or you won't be able to afford him after next year. Play Robertson with 16 and 34.

Keep Mrazek, sign Sparks. Trade Kerfoot, Tavares, Nylander, Muzzin, Holl, Brodie. Trade for Chychrun and Crouse.

Fire Shanny, Dubas and Keefe. Hire Trotz when he is ready to return.

Sign Matty 12.634x8.

I’d like to think we would have just paid Campbell 5x5(which he was open to with the Leafs according to the media) before taking on Murray at a full cap hit and Kalgren as a backup. Despite the rumored tampering with Jack, he probably would have been open to it given his attitude about the team and he’s more of a sure thing than those options. Even at that cap hit I’m still on the fence as to whether I even like Murray more at 25% reduction. I’m ok with it because of the upside and term…but it’s still close.

Trade Kerfoot and Holl at the Draft for futures

Still Move Mrazek

Sandin for Hayton (+ sign cheap bridge deal) still have Niemela coming up at LD

Sign Comrie 2 x1.8m

Sign Samsonov 1 x 1.8m

Sign Perron 2 x 5m

Sign ZAR 2 x 1 m (if possible)

Sign Subban to a cheap 1 year

Sign Dronov (currently on PTO from Arizona?) to help replace Sandin

Resign Engvall on a cheap 1 year

Bunting Matthews Marner
Perron Tavares Nylander
Engvall Hayton Robertson
Clifford ZAR Anderson
Simmonds, Steeves

Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Liljegren
Giordano Subban
Dronov

Comrie
Samsonov

Would still have cap to make some moves at the deadline. Add some depth D if needed and bring in Knies. Goaltending is still as risky but cheaper and more flexible.

Matthews and Nylander are pending UFAs after the upcoming season ends.

Marner and Matthews have full NMC after the season ends (yes marner got 2 full years of NMC)

Nylander has motified NTC after the season ends

-> No way Leafs are going to be able to afford to keep Nylander and Matthews whent ehy become UFAs on top of Marner and Tavares.

We are going to let potentially one or two of the best assets Leafs have (Nylander/Matthews) for nothing.

And what do we have to show for it thus far since the rebuild, overpayments and BS management from dubas? nothing but first round exits!

Trade Kerfoot, Holl for added cap space -sign Evander Kane
Trade Muzzin for added cap space- sign Zadorov

Swapping a top pair dman for bottom pair dman is an interesting choice.
I just feel Big Z can lay out a lot of bodies without getting injured compared to Muzzin and gives us that type of edge/dimension we could use on D imo. Like Lybushkin only bigger/meaner (and probably the same foot speed lol) but he checks off that stay at home old school defending type that leeps the oppositions heads up coming into our blueline. Plus it also puts Gio as the #3-4 d man for our 2nd line making Z our bottom 6 if we needed that type of option to mix and match pur D-men pecking order.

There is absolutely no way to know who would've signed for what - just because player X signed a certain contract with whoever, doesn't mean they would do that with the Leafs (or another team). Way too many variables at play to even speculate or attempt something like this. It's kind of like when a trade is announced, and people trip over themselves on here asking why GM (whoever) didn't make that trade for their team and how stupid they are, etc...
I know someone who was asking why the Leafs didn't sign Lybushkin but Buffalo did. How do we know they didn't try or make an offer.....

I probably would have waited out the Matt Murray situation a bit longer, and forced Ottawa's hand. The Senators might have bought him out, and if they didn't there probably would still have been a deal on the table if that's the direction they wanted to go.

If they waited long enough, they might have ended up with Talbot at a lower cap hit instead.

I think there were other options.
