I’m not convinced McDavid was playing injured, he might’ve just been in a bad funk along with 80% of his teammates. He was off his game even before the hip injury.

But we all knew he would be back to his dominant self eventually. The time has come and I would be surprised if he doesn’t finish the year as the points leader.
He had 8 points in his first 5 games. The following 9 games coming back from injury he had 5 points in 9 games. That's his worst stretch his entire career, including his rookie year where he had 6 points in 9 games. Scoring this year is 3.16gpg, in '16 it was 2.71, the lowest post lockout.

Quite sure he was injured.

Either way he was on a 131 point pace over 82 games.

He was supposed to be out for 1-2 weeks but instead (rightly or wrongly) decided to play through it.
Nothing was ever confirmed by anyone with knowledge. The exact injury, the length of time he was supposed to be out for, etc. Everything has been speculation. I refuse to simply assume that he was playing injured, but I understand that he might’ve been.

Gotta love Hfboards. McDavid was holding him back huh?
He was elevating him, but not to some insane level. The guy went from being on the first line on a bottom feeder to being one of the most valuable 3rd liners in the league on teams that win cups. I don’t think he missed being on McDavid’s wing, and his paycheck wouldn’t have been bigger.

Since you refuse to assume, I presume you have an alternative explanation to suggest that makes more sense than an injury to you?

Confirm it with your own hockey watching eyes. If you couldn’t tell that something was physically wrong with McDavid, that’s on you.

But that requires actually watching the games and studying a player intently, knowing what they looked like before, during, and after.

15 points in his past 5 games.

5 days ago, he was 64th in league scoring and 41st in PPG. Just 3 games later, he’s now tied for 10th and is 8th in PPG.

Creeping back up on Bossy for career PPG; 1.4973 for Bossy, 1.4932 for McDavid.

No that is pure conjecture. It can’t be stated as a fact. As I said he was playing badly from the very beginning of the year.
No Colour guy (Louie) tonight that travels with the team said he was def hurt and only 2 games off was shocking.

Says he’s getting closer to 100% and you can start to tell.

So as much as you don’t want to accept a fact it’s a fact.

McDaddy got his smokes and came back. He’s back baby!

The injury theory is viable, but you are correct, he wasn’t right to start the year before any injuries happened.. there’s no definitive way to say it was all due to injury for that reason.

Most things can't be stated as fact, but you can reasonably infer on the balance of probability. Can't state that aliens exist, but with trillions of planets in the universe, it seems like a foolish hill to die on to think we're alone.

He grabbed his back with a few minutes left in the third and missed the overtime. Didn't you see that game? It was against the Jets. Then he mysteriously misses two more games before the heritage classic.

If that's not due to injury, your supposition is what? The best player in the world gets benched for overtime and then healthy scratched for two games? Or your supposition is that he was injured but was immediately 100% after 2 missed games and instead just played poorly?

Neither of those takes seem supported by logic when you consider the the proverbial KO count to 10 was at about a 9 during the eight game losing streak... Sometimes Occams razor is enough, we're not trying to prove rigorous theorems here.

He had 8 points in the first 4 games before being injured for sure in the Jets game, lol, this is total "parent who is upset their child brought home an A- report card" syndrome.

And looked like crap while doing it. And now he’s looking amazing and has what 15 points in his last 3…. I think he was off to start the year too, i saw it in his game, many saw it, I thought you did too.

Oiler fans are ridiculously spoiled when they are down on him for "only 8 points in 4 games + 2 periods".

Yeah he was a bit down because the goaltending and D looked like hot shit to start the year and there was a bit of a "aw, goddamnit, I gotta do all the heavy lifting", but even then he was still putting up dream numbers for just about any other player.

This guy is the best athlete in team sports IMO. Dude has been playing with probable a torn hip for the last 5 weeks and still is in position to win the scoring title again, lol.

He just turns it on for a week and right back in it the mix, it's f***ing ridiculous what he can do. He's a video game character.

People should appreciate what they're seeing, this type of an athlete does not come around often. This is like an NBA player dropping 50+ points in 5 straight games and throwing in a 60 point game in the mix too and he's probably still not at a full 100% right now.

Hey no one appreciates captain like I do. I’ve watched every minute of his career. But there was cause for concern with what we were seeing to start the year. Forcing passes he would never do in the past, shinning a lot of shots, not connecting on simple passes, stuff like that. He’s amazing enough and the Oilers are built around him enough where he can still put up points. But he just didn’t look like himself by eye.

My theory is it was mental at first… and yeh probably disappointed in what he was seeing out of team… and how the captains skates didn’t really make them more ready than ever. Whatever it was, we may never know, but something was off in those early days this season.

We haven’t seen a hockey player this automatic at piling up points for this long since Gretzky and Lemieux. He’s been averaging 1.63 PPG over his last 420 games played, while missing just 15 games along the way. That’s over 5 full seasons now and just a month away from 6 years of real time having passed. Crazy how people can love those guys and not appreciate the modern iteration doing it many years later in today’s game.

McDavid was clearly injured against the Jets, missed two games then felt good enough to play. Whether he played through injury for a while thereafter or not is up in the air. No one knows for sure.

It doesn’t matter now. He’s clearly on top of his game.

Why do we need an explanation for everything? The injury is obviously a possibility, but no one here knows for sure. Players can go through slumps for a variety of reasons, and the whole team outside of maybe Hyman, Kane and Nurse were going through it until this latest stretch.

I think these kinds of athletes are more revered towards the end of their career, and then their legend grows even larger afterwards.

During their prime, all of the guys in this echelon have been called soft, or whiny at one point or another by opposing fans.

Pretty much everyone who has watched this guy his whole career could tell he was still playing hurt. And it has been considered a given in the Oilers media. So even if it was never confirmed I personally think it is pretty obvious.

Occam's razor also supports injury as the main reason.

And it was not just McDavid slowed by injuries. Ekholm was as well. The play he made on Eichel last night may well have ended up in a goal against three weeks ago.
