What happens to Timo Meier now? (10M Qualifying Offer)

So Meier turns down a presumably solid offer to take his QO to sign where exactly? What team has his Swiss buddies and is really good? Oh I know he can sign with NJ. If he gets a fair offer he can get paid well and play on a good team with some friends. Isn’t that the point of going to UFA?

The Devils gave up 2 1st round picks for Meier. He underperformed in the playoffs and now has a 10M qualifying offer. Giving him that qualifying offer would make him the highest paid player on the Devils next season. The Devils still have to re-sign Bratt (or trade him), and basically half of their forwards.

He can take that 10M qualifying offer straight into UFA and is under no obligation to take a discount or re-sign with the Devils. It's a similar situation Tkachuk was in last year with the Flames, but a higher qualifying offer.

Can we see Meier moved this offseason?
Chicago got 6 1sr round pick in the next 3 years
Concerning they rebuilding and pick Bedard
I really can see meier traded for TBL 2023 1st rnd and 2025 Tor 1st rnd pick
Does NJD Acept

The Devils are built to start winning now with that young roster we have, I don't think they went out there, paid the big price to acquire him just to let him go. Draft picks won't do much for us right now in the direction we are headed.

But your offer is not a bad one say they were to take picks, maybe add Chicago's 2nd this year

They identified him as someone that belongs in their main core…they wouldn’t have traded for him if they didn’t. There is no doubt he was a major disappointment, anyone saying otherwise is rationalizing. I think you stay the course and extend him and let him bounce back to his awesome self.

BUT, I think it would be foolish to at least not reevaluate him as a piece of your core before committing to him. Just make sure he fits the team. Giving up a package like that for a rental would be a big mistake. But it would be a worst mistake to then commit to him if doesn’t fit your team and you extend him merely because of what you gave up for him

Obv an underwhelming playoffs for him but he can have a huge impact on a game when he's not scoring. If he priced himself out of $9.5M I'll be happy.

Someone on the Devils forum said that the rumor is that Meier wants $9 million and the Devils said $8 million. Bridge the difference at $8.5 Million.

The Devils have 3 of his countrymen playing on the team and the team is one of the few teams that is on the rise and can fit his contract.

This offseason is about shopping Bratt and trying to find a more complimentary player to fit Hughes/Hischier and figuring out the goalie situation.

It was reported when he was a Shark that he was looking for a long term deal that started with a 9. If us Sharks fans knew this then New Jersey management did too and before they traded for him. I expect them to sign him for 8 years at roughly 9.5. People have always made too much about his QO. It won’t matter.

The Devils are up and coming and shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

It’s better to have a near-game changer than not have one at all.

Source: fan of a team that hasn’t had a game changer forward in a very long time.

I guess whatever helps them sleep

If I'm NJ I sign him long-term. QO is irrelevant if they agree to a long-term deal and I don't see why they wouldn't. The captain is a fellow Swiss and the team is on the rise, so it's an attractive destination for Meier. The Devils has a good amount of salary coming off the books with Haula, Tatar, and Wood all UFA.

The Devils did not straight up give up two first round picks. They needed to make the conference finals either this year or next year. They didn’t this year, so one more to go.

Both have been really underwhelming in the playoffs, but I think they try to trade Bratt and sign Meier.

At least Meier is big (220 lbs) and has shown the ability to provide some grit in the past.

Bratt was pretty clear the way his last negociations went he has no desire to commit long term in NJ. He is also small.

Not sure they'll find a team willing to give a lot for a small winger like Bratt... I think they'll try to get the DeBrincat deal, but they end up with a mid to late 1st + prospect for a signed Bratt. DeBrincat was scoring a lot of goals vs Bratt.

The Devils literally have 4 forwards signed for next year.

Hughes
Hischier
Palat
Lazar

That's it. That's their entire forward core for next year. Of course, there's a bunch of RFA's and UFA's they will re-sign, but lots of players had a great year on that Devils team and will be seeking raises - so although they appear to have a lot of salary, they have to sign a lot of players. The entire forward core could look a lot different next year.

Keep
-Haula
-Meier
-Mcleod
-Bastian
-Boqvist

Holtz finally has room for him in the lineup and can see if he is going to turn into something
Gritsyuk is having trouble with getting a contract in the KHL so there is a chance he comes over

Trade
-Bratt
-Sharangovich

Potentially walk (needs to be a good deal for the Devils
Tatar
Wood

Sign UFA's

I think DeBrincat is worth more, but Iet's just say don't think he'll ask for less money than Bratt! :)
Well at least Debrincat has a shooter/sniper mentality instead of a Finesse/Pass first style like Bratt which the Devils have enough of.

Devils need to Differentiate their weapon load-out.;)

never thought id see you come around my my side. only a month or two ago you were very adamant that the devils would and should re-sign bratt. for what it's worth i think trading him is the way to go.

Fiala's contract( 7 x 7.85) should be a gauge. I don't see that Meier is a better player.

It seems pretty logical to wait until you see the player play in the playoffs before making any decision about him.:dunno:
