Speculation: Roster Building Thread : Part XVIII ( TDL is March 7th)

Save a rehaul of the coaching staff or doing what the third reich did and spiking everyone's sports drink with methamphetamine I'm not sure what the solution to a 'culture problem' is

Between Spring of 2004 and Fall of 2005 we had a massive roster reshape, and that seemed to do the trick.
We added Jagr, Nylander, Straka and Henrik. That was basically our whole team that year.

We often talk about why the defensemen are making poor decisions leaving a player alone in front of the net, or getting lost on the play, but way too often it has been because there's too many players below the circles and no help. And funny enough when they do help, they're so far below the circles that players just walk in with open lanes.

The forwards do a terrible job allowing players easy zone entries, and then the Dmen do a terrible job backing up and getting tangled up, allowing players to walk in way too far. On the dump and chase, forwards are nowhere to be found ,so our defensemen just wrap it around the boards, or get pinned and hammered. Of course, having defensemen with a quicker step to retrieve the puck and make faster decisions would help, so it's not all on the forwards.

It's just a terrible job all around by everybody and whether it's players, structure or a combination, there's no support.
The amount of reversals where 1 forecheckers completely bottles up 2 defensemen with zero forwards in the frame for 12 seconds is absurd. It looks ridiculous. They look like bozos. Every other team in the league has a center wander back after a while to see what's up and if he can help.

That Center will be completely free because teams that have 1 forechecker have the other 4 guys set up in static places in the neutral zone. He won't get followed. At least make your own blueline!

And yes, after last night I expected Lav to be fired. Must be waiting to the end of the year or until we're truly, deeply out of playoff contention.

Then watch us bring in Toews and Quenneville so we can really be the team everyone hates the most
Just say no to Quenneville

You are 100% correct. All 3 have slipped this season. My disappointment is I predicted that Bread and Vince would decline from career years in their 30's but I had thought Laf would be the guy to take a step up at his age. I really do not know what happened with Laf. He looked ready to take that next step early in the season. Looked like he was in playoff form if not better. Just a strange season where all our warts were not only exposed but got much larger.
Put Laf at LW and put him with Miller as some have said. Maybe he can put up 50 points consistently.

Soucy is a guy who can play down the stretch. He's a big guy who skates pretty well. I'm okay trading Lindgren for assets (2nd + Parsinnen) and then adding Soucy for a 3rd. He can be traded at a later time and the team needs depth and size on the back-end honestly.
thanks bold is good to know

Every defensemen on this team is playing below where they should be. Everybody is saying we have Fox and 6,7 3rd pair guys. Schneider and especially KAM should not be playing like scrubs. They are 1st round picks. So before trading them, how about we get a better defensive coach and a better system. It has to be dawning on everyone by now, not one defensemen has grown under this regime.
Yes, but the other thing is their partners, specifically chemistry
ya, we need to optimize the whole roster, but chemistry is a big deal

we had a fully functioning kid line
dealt KK. got Borgen +
admit Borg has been fab, but was there zero other assets we could have used for him?

We had Chytil
had to go for miller.
Again, were there no other options?

so now Cuylle is finding out his new line

gotta find complementary matches that blend and let them develop synergy!

KAM + Schneid have potential to be great with correct partners
need to identify and develop

I’m playing with the numbers for next year, they need to move Kreider and either Panarin/Mika or they’re totally f***ed lmao
chris is cheaper than either
If he's healthy he is a better value
If he's not, he spends time ltir = cap savings

bread has to understand he's not getting renewed, let alone at anything near 11.6+.

zib we can do better

This offseason i would would move on from
Kreider
K’andre
Panarin
Whole coaching staff

If u can find a taker for Zib, then so be it. But otherwise he has been playing pretty well lately. I woulndt sell him for nothing though.

I think next year is a big punt year for us again. Hopefully we strip it down, suck and end up with Gavin.

Bc there isnt enough in free agency to get us really good. And Drury cant make trades for big players.

I'm still irritated, but more clearheaded. My plan forward is still

1) Kreider to Boston for Hampus Lindholm with a little retention, or a pick back.
2) Sign Matt Duchene if he's available to play a hybrid 2/3C role with Trocheck. Duchene's north south puck lugging we desperately need missing Chytil.
3) Run out Panarin's contract so that we don't waste the cap, but the money is free and available for the mega-shopping spree that will be summer 2026.
4) Re-sign Cuylle, 5x20 or 8x36
5) Look to trade Mika if you can, but don't freak out if you can't. He's frustrating but the versatility has value.
6) (Big one) Lafreniere, Othmann, and Schneider to OTT for Brady Tkachuk

Tkachuk-Miller-Zibanejad
Panarin-Trocheck-Perreault
Cuylle-Duchene-Berard
Edstrom-Carrick-Rempe

Lindholm-Fox
Miller-Borgen
Soucy-Vaak

Maybe none of that can happen. But that's a roster on paper that I'd actually look forward to watching try to win a cup. it has a real #2 defenseman in Lindholm, gets tougher and more competitive upgrading Laf to Tkachuk, rolls 3 solid centers deep. What we have right now doesn't cut the mustard with me.
I'd rather just hold onto Kreider at that point. Hard pass on Hampus Lindholm for five more seasons even with retention. The guy is always hurt and that's a long contract.

I like the defense of management from some being “every GM stinks”

Like yeah, I’d like something different than just the norm. I know that’s asking a lot

If the best defense of Drury is that he’s replacement level, why shouldn’t he be fired?

I understand the thinking but 3 things come to mind.

1. Laf has already been floating to the left side a lot in neutral zone. Not sure why.

2. Laf tends to stay to the outside and get squeezed on the boards on the left side. Id be okay with LW if he drove to the middle more.

3. We will likely need more than 50 points out of Laf and any 1st line players to succeed.

He's pacing for just under 50 points. If we have to move Lafreniere to accommodate a better fit for him, he better bring back more than 50 points. Otherwise we're just getting the same player for the most part.

Why for example was Laf good last year and as soon as he signs a new contract starts to suck. Why is Igor after signing a new contract also starting to suck. Why also is Kreider a shell of his former self. Why is Mika afraid of his own shadow. Why cant our power play score ever. Hate to say it but must be the coaching is horrible.

Chytil is production pacing the same for Vancouver right now with 3 more minutes per game. I love Chtyil and he was a fan favorite, but he was injured a lot, and not exactly looking like the replacement for when Zibanejad is gone, or pushed down even further. I don't think we had other options for a JT trade. Chytil had to go.

The bottom line is the team just isn't that good. Even the last few ECF teams were carried by goaltending and hot powerplays. Last year up 3-0 to Carolina i was shitting myself and we were close to blowing that too until Kreider pulled the team out of the shitter and became a god. Even in the good years, this team is never a threat and you never truly feel like a game or series is over. Need to cut the dead weight and start fresh. Sick of seeing the same shit every year

Or it could mean that some players are stubborn and stuck in their ways.

Though I am not against moving on from the current staff, because I think the defensive issues are related to coaching, I am doubting all the coaches will be gone. After firing Turk, I don't think Drury will want to explain to Dolan why he has to pay another coach to not coach. I would bet, to save face with his boss, that any changes will be with the assistants and not the head coach. Regardless, whatever their system is, the players seem to either ignoring it or confused by it because the D is horrid.

could be. But its clear how badly coached this team is
The players don't listen to the coach. The coaches say the right things, pretty much everything we've been saying all year, during the Giannone interviews going into the 3rd period. Get pucks in deep, clear pucks out of the zone quickly, don't turn it over in the neutral zone or at the blue lines, don't overpass when you have a good shot, crash the net. The players haven't done what the coaches ask all season.

It's certainly Laviolette's fault for not getting the message through, but we're also already three coaches in with the Panarin/Fox/Zib/Kreider core. Ultimately, the leaders on this team need to hold everyone accountable. Except they're the main culprits! Mika overpasses all of the time, Panarin flees the d-zone before the puck is safely out all of the time, all of the core turn the puck over in horrible positions all of the time. Enough is enough.

You cannot win in this league with a "cheat for offense" mindset. Cup winners generate much of their offense by playing strong defense.

NHL coaching isn't about strategy. Its is all about vibes.

Lav has no rizz, no aura, no fire. he used to , back in the HBO days, but he's beyond washed. He just stands there like a putz with his thumb up his ass.

Move on from him.
