Speculation: What do the Oilers need to do to take the next step?

They need to apologize and offer a sacrifice to "The Human Rake" God if they want to see the playoffs again...since his departure they were cursed.

What I would do:

1. Larsson is starting on a whole new team, partner, and system, Klefbom is a huge unknown because of injury and inexperience and therefore Sekera is desperately needed on the left side. If Fayne starts off poorly again, the Oilers need another option. I'd explore trading Nurse, Davidson, or Reinhart for a similar developed RHD. Maybe add a pick to push things. At least if Klefbom falters, Sekera and Davidson should be able to hold things together in the top-4 while Klefbom/Nurse/Reinhart/etc.. are the bottom pairing. If you move Sekera to the right side and something happens with Klefbom, you can't be having Davidson as your #1 guy on the left.

2.Look at upgrading Gustavsson throughout the season. Can't rely on Talbot to carry the season on his shoulders when the stakes are this high. Jonas Gustavsson is an alright option, but I'd want more of an established guy given the situation.

3. Hall for Lucic might be fairly "lateral" and Purcell for Maroon might be equal, but I don't see an overall upgrade in the Oilers forward moves this year. Overall they need to get tougher to play against they need some more depth. Yakupov is the obvious guy to move. There is absolutely an overpaid two-way RW on someone's roster that could be freed up and would fit the Oilers better than Yakupov. Then I'd spend the season combing through teams looking for another depth RW.
1. Can't argue

2. I'm not a fan of the Gustavsson signing at all. Why can't the Oilers rely on Talbot? He was amazing for the Rangers when Hank was out and the pressure was on. He started out poorly last year(probably in shock of the terrible defense in front of him:laugh:) but pulled it together and ended up with a .917 SV% over 50+ games

3.Maroon brings an add element that the Oilers have been sorely lacking for years. When Matt Hendricks and Darnell Nurse are the only regulars who will drop the gloves its a problem. Oh, there's that Puljujarvi kid that might be an upgrade on RW and the Yakupov trade winds have died down to non-existent this summer so I would bet that he's an Oiler opening night.

of the top 299 goal scorers
27 are men who score 212 goals

272 fwds score 3040 goals.

Comparing the level of #9 or #10 Fwd scoring you get from a Dman is a complete waste of time.

Ohhhh barrie is soon much better as a Dman cause he scores like an upper #9 forward as compared to larsson who scores like a bottom #10 forward.

Most on here base the value of Defensemen on the difference in bottom 4 Fwd level of scoring.
LMAO!

Dmen have zero to do with elite scoring in the NHL.
the only 2 above League average in EVG play part of the time as forwards.

the more the puck is away from Dman pocession the better chance a goal will be scored.

so minimal affect on EVGF/60.

But you do know what Defensemen have a Primary affect on?

The DEFENCE of the net.

The reduction of HSC shots that get 75% of the goals.
resulting low EVGA rates.

the #1 D in the game are Dmen who face
1st comp
Defend HSC area low HSCA/60
low SA/60
Top end EVGA/60

there are 15-17 of these Dmen each year.
the best the last 2 years.
A. Larrson

The only offensive ability I want from my D is getting the D..... puck to the 272 forwards who score 93.5% of the goals the top 300 score.

that elite Dmans #10 fwd scoring rate makes such a difference!
:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

Klefbom #28 EVA/60
Larsson #39 EVA/60
that is elite offensive d play.
Pass the d...... Puck!

Can anyone explain what the above even means? In English?

She's 38 in two weeks. I think the oilers should be looking for someone younger.

I could picture it if MacT was still GM.

IDK, but since he says that Larsson is literally the new Lidstrom and Karlsson was one of the worst defensemen last season, I wouldn't care too much.

E: And apparently Girardi is carrying McDonagh. Wow.

So reading this thread, Larsson is a top10 NHL D, Klefbom and Davidson in top30. Sekera is top40.

This is exactly everybody though this Larsson trade was completely useless. So many allstar defenders in the roster already, according to this thread...

On more serious note. If you have 2 top30 D on the team and you dont make the playoffs, might want to check how you interpret the stats.

If you believe the guy who vomits out poorly formatted screeds claiming that Larsson has taken over from Doughty as the best all-around defender in the game based on a single questionable metric, then the Oilers are going to be great.

Meanwhile, if you care to judge defensemen by other metrics like possession and shot generation, Larsson's value may be a little lower than that of a top 5 D in the league.

Personally I think the Oilers should have signed Demers, not that it matters.

Da Big Apple
to Oilers
Klein, Lindberg, Fast

to Rangers
EDM 2017 1st, Yakimov, Yakupov

Oil gets productive RD 2nd pair guy who can/has provided relief at top pair, on cheap contract for 2 years, should be good another 1-2 years after, plus also on NOW, depth C and versatile W.

NY gets futures in pick and Yaki, who has potential based on size, but is really green. Yaku, is a dump who could not command a 3rd at the draft, a crapshoot project.

Dude you already had one of those and your team traded him for a third.

schultz needed a change of scenery to even remotely remain in the nhl in any capacity. he was dreadful for us. awful. there are a number of oilers who were struggling because they were asked to do too much. schultz fit that bill as well. doesn't mean he wasn't brutal though.

FINALLY the answer to the OP is found!!!

Trade everyone off the Oilers so they get a fresh start somewhere else, then trade them back to Edmonton to assemble a solid hockey club. ...Yakupov & RNH are next to get the fresh start, Hall and Schultz need a year before they're ready to return while Cogliano and Dubnyk are ready to make Edmonton better now.

Yeah I agree. The Oilers do not have 2 top 3 dmen...
Maybe one of them is between Klef and Larsson but time will tell.
Larsson is widely considered a #2, Klefbom is made of glass so I don't even count him, and Sekera is a low end #3 defenseman. The rest are bottom pairing guys

Better off waiting until mid season to see how the new lineup performs. Then move RNH and/or Eberle to fill that void.
