Speculation: What do the Oilers need to do to take the next step?

I couldn't believe Hall was traded for Larsson. Just a bad trade trading a 1st overall all-star for a decent but not elite level defenseman. Really feel for Oilers fans and if I were GM I'd have gotten rid of Eberle & Nurse + pick for Larsson. This Hall trade is going to bite them in the ass when Hall lights it up in NJ.

I'm of the opinion the Oilers need to acquire either Shattenkirk or Barrie and somehow package Eberle/Yakupov/Draft Picks even if they have to over pay. Their defense is still their weak link. I think if they get a top pairing D man they'd easily be a playoff contender.

And that's your problem right there, when you consider that the offense (minus Hall next year) wasn't that good either !!

If all their top players are healthy, they are probably a playoff team.

Still not sold on their #1 goalie though.

Probably just wait and see.

A healthy McDavid, along with a revamped D corps and a good coach with a good system... Should be able to do some nice things.

That being said, there is so much parity in the NHL nowadays, that it takes such a small thing to go from mediocre to really good.

And everyone is looking for it.

Wasn't it Hall or nothing for Larsson?
They are a better team now and longterm after that trade.

I doubt,

Lucic-McDavid
RNH-Eberle
Dra-Pulju
is going to be weak forward group.

Can anyone explain what the above even means? In English?

Really pretty simple . Of the 299 top scorers in the NHL only 27 are defensive men

Those 27 D men score 212 goals . Breaking it down to 6.5 % of goals .

While the 272 fwds score 3040 goals. Breaks down to 93.5 % of goals .

He is saying he does not care about a D that scores . He rather them just to have a 1st pass that is good enough to get it to the forwards who do most of the scoring anyways . Hew also has stats that show Larsson is the best D at defending in the game . He posted that a few times . .

I understand what he is saying and I understand the stats and numbers he post .

Just be clear understanding them and agreeing without checking the numbers are totally different . I have never checked his sources . I also seen him post stats before on other Oilers D that if someone did not know or watch hockey would lead you to believe the Oilers D were tops or one of the tops in the NHL when it comes to defence . I guess they are like any other stat , they need to be taken with a gain of salt .

Eberle can't be moved. Especially this late in the off season with no viable free agent replacements. The Oilers right wing depth is not good. Also teams that have assets the Oilers covet cannot take on the nine million dollars worth of salery that comes with the players you mention as an alternative. Then comes your complaint about apparently over paying in the Hall for Larsson trade while stating to do just that with other players. :handclap:

Good job. You have created an unrealistic scenario and even if it were to happen, managed to make the team worse in the process.

Nuge & Eberle + Pick has much more value than Hall straight up... not to mention this would make us a worse team...

I don't think Cam Talbot is the guy to win them a cup I think, like Buffalo the Oilers need to pursue Bishop

gonna have to teach your forwards that there are 2 ends to a rink and if you dont play both ends you will never be good.

I am a Flames fan, but the Oilers have had a great offseason. On the surface, the Oil lost the Hall/Larsson deal based on value, but it's a deal they had to make. They have been criticized for years for not making that tough deal and dealing a core piece. So guess what, they finally do and they get criticized for it, go figure. Chia had no leverage in that deal, the entire hockey world knew he had to trade for a dman. Also, what young top pairing dman was availabile? I was actually surprised they got Larsson, I had no idea he was available, I think that's why it happened because they had to overpay to get him.

Bottom line is, Edmonton is a better team. I wouldn't say Hall was expendable, but they have enough depth upfront to fill that void internally. Also, get the culture change going. This sends a message to Eberle and RNH that no one is untouchable and losing is no longer acceptable.

Lucic was a huge add, his presence on and off the ice will really make a difference. People will hate on the Oil just because, but that bloody team is going to be scary as hell, especially with adding Pulju at the draft.

I think the Oilers are a playoff team all day.

Its actually your problem.
1) The Oilers defense couldnt get the puck out of their own zone so that suffocated the offense
2) McDavid, RNH, Pouliot, Klefbom, and Davidson all missed 25+ games last year. Having them somewhat healthier and the addition of Lucic, Puljujarvi, Larsson and even a full season of Maroon will more than make up for Hall's departure

A stud offensive dman on the blue line and a great shutdown center with improved bottom 6.

I think they improved a lot already. Internal growth, plus their additions this summer could be enough to get them to the middle of the league.
