What can we do to get Keefe fired.

I guess Bettman said no to coach Q at this time. That was the plan. Time for plan B.
Now at Allstars break. They decided to let hom go 5 days ago. He is simply on borrowed time.

It is impossible to have sustained success in this league without properly developing and integrating young players. This aspect of coaching has and continues to be one of Keefe’s biggest flaws as a head coach. Got Gio on PP1 with Rielly in the box, and why? Because he never gave Liljegren a shot in that spot despite the fact he was drafted with offensive skills, he instead gave that time to Sandin and when he soured on him he didn’t bother giving Liljegren a shot. I get Liljegren has had a bad game tonight and the puck is bouncing all over for him but maybe if time had been put into that aspect we could’ve had someone with actual decent legs on the PP instead of a 40 year old geriatric.

Knies is struggling because this season has the most amount of games played in his entire career. Robertson is doing nothing but warming a seat in the press box. f***ing switch them out every once in a while if you don’t want both of them in at the same time. Give Knies some rest and get Robertson playing time. These two have the exact opposite problem (Robertson hasn’t played enough in recent years due to injury, Knies is playing too much) so do something proactive instead of letting both guys fail.

Jones is turning back into a pumpkin. Would’ve been helpful to see if Hildeby was capable of playing up here. Now this decision may have been done more by committee so blame may not entirely fall on him, but it’s brutal watching Jones flounder and knowing Samsonov isn’t trustworthy.

NYI - Dec/Jan record 10-8-5 - GM says "“Watching our team play, I felt that the inconsistency that has been going on for some period of time was not going to end,” Lamoriello said on a video call with reporters." - January 20, 2024 - They fired their coach today and hired Roy.

Toronto Dec/Jan record 10-8-5 - GM says "To me, we've been hit and miss," Treliving said following his club's practice on Monday. "There's been some inconsistency in our game, which is a little concerning. It’s an area we’d like to clean up and improve upon." - November 27, 2023

One coach gets fired - the other coach gets two more months, to allow inconsistency to continue for quite some time....

How is the situation any different? Oh yeah NYI on paper are much less skilled , I guess the standards are just higher elsewhere.

Old man Lou had the cajones to pull the trigger. He had one man in mind to get his team on the right track and to play the way he envisions.

Here we just watch the ship slowly sink. The tendencies/habits/style of this team shows the trouble we are in. These guys don’t battle. Find someone who can help inspire that change.

Old man Lou puts the team first. He once sent Mogilny to the minors because he needed to save money on cap. Team always must come first

His track record does speak for itself. Wasn’t a fan of some of his moves here but he isn’t afraid to make changes. And he demands a lot from his players.

Let’s get Berube in here. He won’t baby these guys

The Panicking Peter's need to chill. Keefe is doing a great job and the Leafs are on track for great things this season. The Core 4 are happy and healthy and playing great. They are resilient. They don't give up. The Power Play is deadly. They are one of the best with the goalie pulled. And too many ppl forget, they are doing this all without their #1 goalie, the brick Woll! He will be back when it counts and lead them through the playoffs. Nothing to worry about. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the great coaching and performances of Hall of Fame players.

What have you been smoking?

Keefe has a built in excuse because we're playing a third string goaltender

No one expects Jones to be good so when he's ass what is Keefe supposed to do?

We need Samsonov to find his game or Woll to come back ASAP. Jones has gave up 5 straight bad goaltending performances.

His save percentage is dropping rapidly with every game he plays

I’m not a Keefe fan and I would have got rid of him last season but when every scoring chance against go in, wouldn’t matter who was coaching. He does a lot of things that don’t make sense at all and I feel there’s better options to coach us. If Brad doesn’t figure out the goalie issues why bother getting rid of him now, won’t help imho.

I said at the beginning of the season anyone who thought Keefe was going to integrate the young players into the roster was out to lunch, and got absolutely hammered here by fans who insisted that Keefe wasn't afraid of young players... And so far it's happened as I expected. Keefe STILL instinctively goes to the not-good-enough veteran mid-tier guys over any possible young guy, and he STILL puts young guys in positions to fail way too often...

Everyone was calling for Knies to be moved up from line 3 early in the season because he was playing so well. Keefe's decision? Run him straight up to line ONE, play him way too much, and then when he starts to show his age and inexperience, blame him for it and push him back down. This is NOT how you develop a young guy. Robertson's handling has been almost equally as bad, but I think the worst has been Keefe's handling of Sandin and Lilj over the last few years. Now Sandin is gone so Keefe could continue to play Gio as if he wasn't 40 and clearly showing his age, and Lilj is STILL playing scared because Keefe keeps yanking him all over the lineup with a leash few other players on this team have...

It just feels like Keefe will never be fired and I know this is an old mans take, and bear with me but I kinda hope we miss the playoffs, maybe that way Keefe will finally be gone and Shanahan fired. Maybe? I mean it seems the board of directors is happy with the way the team is, tickets sold out, jerseys sell and they make their money, but playoffs make a ton of money too and maybe if they miss that revenue heads will roll.

Hard to fire the coach when you can’t get a save.

I think that is a fair point but ask yourself how many of those goals are systematic and how many are on the goalie? There are easily 4 goals last night that dont even become a SOG with better systematic play. Ask yourself honestly how do the Leafs look without the puck in their own end? Organized and composed or scrambly and chaotic?

I hope, hope Tre brings in a coach who stresses tight defensive play away from the puck and then makes player decisions afterwards. Trading a guy like Robertson to plug up coaching issues would be disappointingly short sighted. You could trade for Pasta/Marchand/Mcdavid and Draisaitl and this team would be the same one sided shitty no thought about structured defensive play .500 team.

Where did you see this?

Another big issue is how little patience he has for certain line or pairing combinations that don’t catch fire immediately. The LW spot beside Matthews has been a merry go round all season, with Jarnkrok being the latest guy there, getting time up there against Vancouver since Holmberg was having a poor game. Bertuzzi was penciled in there but he “lost” his job there. Now I’m not saying Bertuzzi would be thriving up there or anything, but Keefe gave that line exactly 5 games before he broke them up and has never tried Bertuzzi there since. Calling it quits on that experiment when you’re paying the guy $5.5 million and you didn’t even give them half a dozen games to find chemistry is ridiculous, and now we’re back to the same problem we’ve had with 1LW, not knowing who to play there.

Rielly-Liljegren is another one he’s briefly tried that he doesn’t let breath, though that ties back into his shit handling of young players. Brodie is floundering out there with Mo but God Forbid you try anything else.

Looking at the difference between our home and away record, I would suggest the coach is a huge part of the problem.
I remember reading that if your road record is much better than home record it's because, on the road, the matching of lines is taken out of the coaches hands. So, if your team does well when you are tying the coaches hands a bit without having last line change...you know he is a major problem.

Again I have nothing personal against Keefe and his team. I think there is a decent coach there.

But after repeated playoff failures (which if we're honest did involve being out coached) and a current season of struggle including (but not limited to) awful special teams, a roster that generally refuses to play like an actual team and an egregious amount of bench minors, it's time.

The Islanders are three points behind us and pulled the trigger.

Yes the roster is flawed, but we aren't going to fix that mid season with a broad stroke. There's no cavalry coming to save us right now.

Take the L, fire the coach, and see what this roster truly has before re-evaluating the off-season.

It's time.

If Keefe is fired, I think we should put Boucher as interim coach and re-evaluate the coaching position in the summer. There is a good chance John Cooper would become available and he is my #1 preference.

I wouldn't want to jump on Berube or Coach Q right now. I'm not opposed to them, but the team is a tire fire right now and is missing a lot of pieces (esp on D and goaltending). I think a decision on who the new permanent HC can wait until the summer especially with a retooled roster for next year.

With coaching, you have two general buckets: tactics and people managing.

Let’s say he gets a pass in tactics cause the Leafs roster is in shambles in net.

Well, his people management is still extremely poor, having created an NBA starting 5, a handful of randoms he trusts and a bench full of extras he has no trust in or any interest cultivating trust. Plus stunted young players.
