I don't want to hear this tbh.

Just because you are big doesn't mean you should play more minutes. I want to play the best players possible. Get Zetterlund in there over turds like McLeod and Bastian.
Thats not what i said at all... I said they need some bigger sized forwards in their top 9. was Hart screened on any shots tonight.. this has been a problem for 5 years with this team...

Nice to finally see we have a reporter who actual wants to do their job and asks about Bratt's ice time. Lindy got in a huff and walked out right after. Can we get this losing fossil off this f***ing team already? I can't believe we entered the season with pieces we knew were f***ing broken.

This almost certainly isn't the final nail, but it's certainly A nail for Ruff.

And it was well-earned tonight, between the Blackwood start (which was blind, as far I'm concerned) and favoritism, along with the low Bratt usage.

The only goal I don't think I'd nail Blackwood on is the third goal.

@BurntToast didn't like it, which I certainly respect, but I can't nail him for that one.

Goal 2 is a tough one and not terrible, but it was a stoppable one.

Goals 1 and 4 were just straight up BAD.

If you're getting screened by what happened on goal 4 then just either get another optical plan or just put on some goggles like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar used to wear. I'm pretty sure he only wore those for protection, but you might be able to find someone who can fit your a pair to help you see those pesky pucks from well out that Blackwood seems to get beaten on more than most NHL goalies.
and in this league 1 or 2 bad goals generally costs you.... and also when you give them up... we score on the pp and gives up a garbage goal right away

Hughes was the best forward.. Marino was the best defenseman. but i thought on the whole the defense was dreadful... the forwards were not much better and Blackwood
Jack sucked tonight...he was invisible for the majority of the game.

And Ray Ferraro said it best on the second goal..."Marino was checking air"

It was a terrible team performance.

My quick and dirty initial thoughts on the players:

Severson: Had a bad pinch early on, but it lead to nothing, and then at least scored a goal at the end.
Dougie: Looked a bit like the 2nd Doguie we saw from last season, not the 1st great Dougie. Not concerned yet but mildly worrying.
Siege: Looked reasonable. Had some good plays but did get walked once.
Marino: Liked a lot from the first game. Want more
Smith: Seemed ok until he didn't come back. Hard to say, but seemed servicable in the short shifts.
Graves: So-so. Offensive shot still too slow to get off. Hope he finds his game

Palat: OK, obviously he seemed a bit cautious for half the game, but warmed up as the game got along. I thought he'd be a little more shot aggressive, but I think he was deferring to passing more to Hughes and whomever. Excited at the prospects of how he will warm his game up.
Hughes: Wasn't alone here, but started real quiet, but warmed up by the 3rd period. Looked closer to what we expect by 3rd, but was a little late overall.
Bratt: Same story. It's like the team woke up and realized the season started by 3rd period. He got a little more lucky getting the assists down.
Mercer: Looked like Mercer from last year, just new number. This is great news. Hard board play, fiesty getting pucks, good offense instincts still.
Shara: Looked invisible during first period. Got his legs going in some of the PK attempts.
Tatar: Up and down, not bad, but that wipeout was most noticable. Had a decent game. Same old.
Haula: Nothing bad. Seemed to be sorta like some guys we have already. Will need to see him for more games.

Holtz: Good to get that monkey off his back, looked decent in the 1st.
Wood: Good to see him back, but he is still a doofus. Hoping he will find that edge and offense he had 2 years ago.
McLeod: Can we swap him for Zetterlund/Mango/Boq instead. Mango is better than him or I'd rather see Zetterland be a bulldog out there. He's the only guy on the roster i feel we don't need to hang on to. We already got our likeable Wood and Bastian
Bastian: Fine, status quo.
Boq: Didn't see much of him. He was good to end last season, i feel he probably is better than McLeod at this point.

Blackwood: Ehhhhhh. Meh. Those 2 quick succession goals were a back-breaker as per last seasons Devils. If he plays like this same way, we will not have a good season if we rely on him. Maybe one of them was not his fault, but its just that he can't stop the shots when the team needs him to be a wall. Such as a tie game, or recent goal scored (on our side, or their side)

We definitely need NIco back, anyway.

I'll leave my coaching comments for a few more games into season :)

Overall at all strenghts, NJ had 14 high-danger chances. Philly had 8.

This idea that we are giving up tons of open chances but not getting any is not true.
The second goal against is a textbook example. Yes, was a bad turnover that created a chance against. But Blackwood still gets beat clean from 50 feet out. Stop the god damn puck.

Sabres:

2.43 xGF (4 GF)
2.86 xGA (1 GA)
I’m going to say this as nicely as possible.

I don’t give a f*** what xGF shows. This is one of those analytics that people take as gospel without questioning if it’s truly and objectively measuring what matters most in determining what qualifies as “high danger” chances.

I don't know how anybody can watch this game and not pin the blame squarely on Blackwood.

At least in terms of the on ice players.

Ruff blows, we know this. His system is making a solid core of defenders look like headless chickens.

Jack created a lot. His commitment to defense zone positioning still leaves a lot to be desired. The whole team is also so eager to fly the zone and stretch the play before we even have solid possession of the puck.

That's fine. I usually like it and I find it paints a decently accurate picture of the performance in net.

no game is ever 100% on one player

But tonight I would say it was at least 80% on the goalie.

Was feeling a bit sad about this game earlier but now I got two beers in me so it's time to get the positive vibes going! Lets smash the Wings Saturday!
piss off.. lol I'm staying toxic

dude way too generous.... the whole 4th line stunk.. graves was a goddam train wreck... smith is not a good NHL regular.. he is 7th guy... serviceable at the best.. no point in bringing in mango... just another undersized dude we got that guy. and plenty of them.... agree like to see zetterlund grind it out there..
its one game... but i think we are all freaking out because we saw this movie last year... played mildly better than our opponent and basically got blown out..special teams and goaltending were sub par again

The score speaks louder than words.

I dont even know what this means? They lost, so that means the team just sucks overall and nothing that goes into that score should be discussed?

Bratt was great. Hughes was great. Marino was great. Blackwood stunk. McLeod stunk. Haula wasnt good.

These are the intricacies of the game. Not just "TEAM LOSE THEY BAD"
