I don't know how anybody can watch this game and pin the blame squarely on Blackwood.

At least in terms of the on ice players.

Ruff blows, we know this. His system is making a solid core of defenders look like headless chickens.
It’s like pointing out that a guy out punched his foe 14-1…when the guy with 1 punch knocked the guy with 14 out cold.

and in this league 1 or 2 bad goals generally costs you.... and also when you give them up... we score on the pp and gives up a garbage goal right away
He constantly did the same thing last year.

He'd rarely make it to 10 shots without getting scored and many times it was one of the first 5 shots.

When he'd go above .900% for the game, he'd promptly allow another one to sink us. He did it in the season finale against Detroit, which was pathetic.

I think he got beat on the 2nd or 3rd shot on goal tonight. He got bailed out by the post before he even faced a shot (post shots normally aren't credited as a goalie save unless the scorer thinks the goalie saved it first). I think he made it to 12 shots before allowing another goal on shot 13 and then another on shot 14. I think he allowed his fourth on the 20th shot or maybe even earlier.

I don't wanna hear it anymore. I don't wanna hear that he's got long covid or that his foot is hurt. I mean, by all means if he is still suffering from long covid (I'm not saying he isn't) then he may NEVER be right again and if he is then we certainly don't have the time to wait for him to completely recover from that.

He almost definitely needs to be Samsonov'd after this year, which means let him go to UFA. Don't extend him another year like we did to Wood just because he's an RFA. If he has anything less than a league average year he can't be here next year and certainly not for $3 million.

Nice to finally see we have a reporter who actual wants to do their job and asks about Bratt's ice time. Lindy got in a huff and walked out right after. Can we get this losing fossil off this f***ing team already? I can't believe we entered the season with pieces we knew were f***ing broken.
Someone here asked for Ryan to "pick a side" earlier on...

...He did. It was ours.

It would be hard to have an NHL game much worse than that, but it should be interesting when we play the yotes.

The Devils lose to the Flyers 2-5. shots 37-25 in favor of the Devils.
The fifth goal was the empty net.

For the first two periods, the team was tried to keep the puck, but did not raise the pace, did not physically press. Holtz scored the first goal, catching Hart unprepared to the shot.
As a result, Philadelphia tried harder in the forecheck, due to the pressure on the forecheck and screening of the goaie, flyers scores three goals. And the fourth on the PP
The Devils scored one goal in the third period, Try to push on the flyers, but either Hart helped out, or Provorov, or the forwards - Tatar, Mercer, Sharangovich, Smith and others did not use their opportunities.
Blackwood missed 3 goals from 14 shots, he had no chance to stop the third goal, but he did not stop"shots" that Hart stoped.

The beginning of the season, Bratt and Sharangovich seemed to be absent for the first two periods, for some reason Bahl and Zetterlund, who showed themselves in the preseason, did not come to the game, and Blackwood played in the goal, although Vanechek looked better in the preseason. Raff has yet to shake up the squad and the lines. And if situation will not changed, the coaching staff will shake a little. The first game is far from being judged, but in several moments the defensmenwere cut off, Severson and Graves in defense did their defensive shifts badly.

And forwards should score 3-4 goals, not 2 from 37 shots. Hart made some great saves, especially the save on Mercer at the end of the game, but there were also situations where Hart just closed what he could, and the puck just went into him - it was enough when they could at least catch othe race of the game.

On the positive side, most of PP looked intelligible. But it's too early to judge one game either.

Philly were play for Torts game and present the coach at the opening game W at home. Devils played a fairly typical game from last season - they had more possession of the puck, had much more chances, but missed opportunities, defensemen were critically cut off, and Blackwood did not help out and made positional mistakes. His problems - controlled rebound, the ability to control screens, playing against breakaways - have not gone away. We are waiting for Vanechek and see what he is worth, and what the team with him is worth.

My quick and dirty initial thoughts on the players:

Severson: Had a bad pinch early on, but it lead to nothing, and then at least scored a goal at the end.
Dougie: Looked a bit like the 2nd Doguie we saw from last season, not the 1st great Dougie. Not concerned yet but mildly worrying.
Siege: Looked reasonable. Had some good plays but did get walked once.
Marino: Liked a lot from the first game. Want more
Smith: Seemed ok until he didn't come back. Hard to say, but seemed servicable in the short shifts.
Graves: So-so. Offensive shot still too slow to get off. Hope he finds his game

Palat: OK, obviously he seemed a bit cautious for half the game, but warmed up as the game got along. I thought he'd be a little more shot aggressive, but I think he was deferring to passing more to Hughes and whomever. Excited at the prospects of how he will warm his game up.
Hughes: Wasn't alone here, but started real quiet, but warmed up by the 3rd period. Looked closer to what we expect by 3rd, but was a little late overall.
Bratt: Same story. It's like the team woke up and realized the season started by 3rd period. He got a little more lucky getting the assists down.
Mercer: Looked like Mercer from last year, just new number. This is great news. Hard board play, fiesty getting pucks, good offense instincts still.
Shara: Looked invisible during first period. Got his legs going in some of the PK attempts.
Tatar: Up and down, not bad, but that wipeout was most noticable. Had a decent game. Same old.
Haula: Nothing bad. Seemed to be sorta like some guys we have already. Will need to see him for more games.

Holtz: Good to get that monkey off his back, looked decent in the 1st.
Wood: Good to see him back, but he is still a doofus. Hoping he will find that edge and offense he had 2 years ago.
McLeod: Can we swap him for Zetterlund/Mango/Boq instead. Mango is better than him or I'd rather see Zetterland be a bulldog out there. He's the only guy on the roster i feel we don't need to hang on to. We already got our likeable Wood and Bastian
Bastian: Fine, status quo.
Boq: Didn't see much of him. He was good to end last season, i feel he probably is better than McLeod at this point.

Blackwood: Ehhhhhh. Meh. Those 2 quick succession goals were a back-breaker as per last seasons Devils. If he plays like this same way, we will not have a good season if we rely on him. Maybe one of them was not his fault, but its just that he can't stop the shots when the team needs him to be a wall. Such as a tie game, or recent goal scored (on our side, or their side)

We definitely need NIco back, anyway.

I'll leave my coaching comments for a few more games into season :)
What are you smoking? Graves was brutal and Smith shouldn’t be in the NHL. Severson, Marino and Siegenthaler were decent.

Hamilton wasn’t good and needs to be way better for what he’s getting paid.

Sorry, I only read the d part and then got really pissed when I read the Graves part. Even after 1 game I’m already sick of him. I’ll be pretty sick of Hamilton soon if he doesn’t start looking like an actual top pairing dman.

Agree on most of the forwards.

Overall at all strenghts, NJ had 14 high-danger chances. Philly had 8.

This idea that we are giving up tons of open chances but not getting any is not true.
yeah i didn't see that thanks for backing it up with stats.... i will go back to what i have been saying until you get .910 goaltending on most nights you don't know if your team just sucks or what... what i saw though is we obviously got out tendered... and tortorella's teams block shots and play hard in the middle in the D zone and our forwards didn't want to pay price in front

Jack created a lot. His commitment to defense zone positioning still leaves a lot to be desired. The whole team is also so eager to fly the zone and stretch the play before we even have solid possession of the puck.
He’s was quiet for a large portion of the game.

I dont even know what this means? They lost, so that means the team just sucks overall and nothing that goes into that score should be discussed?

Bratt was great. Hughes was great. Marino was great. Blackwood stunk. McLeod stunk. Haula wasnt good.

These are the intricacies of the game. Not just "TEAM LOSE THEY BAD"

Did you watch the game? Because Bratt was terrible when he was on the ice, and he wasn't on the ice much. In fact anyone named Jesper was frigging invisible the whole night. Hughes was a step off his game and didn't generate anything.

Marino was terrific except on one of the big defensive breakdowns.

Overall the whole team stuck and Blackwood was pretty awful.

TEAM LOSE, TEAM BAD!
TEAM WIN, TEAM GOOD!

got it. Have a wonderful evening!!!
Generally speaking, good teams win more often than they lose. And bad teams lose more often than they win.

Unfortunately for this team, wins are measured in goals for and against. Not pie charts and questionable assessments of what qualifies as high danger chances.

Hockey is a game that is part skill and part luck, too.

The thing is though that whenever he was on the ice, the ice tilted in the Devils favor more often than not.

People like to call Jack Hughes a "game-changer" but I think Bratt may be the low-key "game-changer" here.

piss off.. lol I'm staying toxic

dude way too generous.... the whole 4th line stunk.. graves was a goddam train wreck... smith is not a good NHL regular.. he is 7th guy... serviceable at the best.. no point in bringing in mango... just another undersized dude we got that guy. and plenty of them.... agree like to see zetterlund grind it out there..
its one game... but i think we are all freaking out because we saw this movie last year... played mildly better than our opponent and basically got blown out..special teams and goaltending were sub par again

That's why i'm saying they need to forget about McLeod. If we must play Wood because he is more sentimentally important and has a bit more of an X factor (in speed and goals), then fine, but lets keep Zetterlund or Boq as an option and get Mike McLeod outta here finally.

With Smith, we only saw 10 mins TOI, i can't say make much of one game and that TOI. Of course he is a 7th guy, but he didn't look out of place for a 7th guy.

PP was better not marginally, not giving up a shortie was awesome. Hard to say what the PK is.

Yeah we lost out mainly due to subpar goaltending at the wrong times. Blackwood made some decent saves but then craps the bed when you need him to be a wall. After momentum changes, most importantly.

Hughes was the best forward.. Marino was the best defenseman. but i thought on the whole the defense was dreadful... the forwards were not much better and Blackwood
Marino, Severson and Siegenthaler were all okay. Hughes was invisible for a large portion of the night and we need more from him.

Keep in mind this Flyers team is absolutely horrible, what the hell is going to happen when we play a team who’s best forward isn’t Travis Konecny

Bratt was not terrible... neither was Bovquist he is a third/fourth line player that doesn't make a ton of mistakes out there....

yeah but a home opener and they are terrible on paper but they do have a good coach ... and they played the clog it up style torts is known for ... you are always in for a game against his teams i don't care how bad on paper they are.... the devils on the other hand are the polar opposite...

Smith is a bum. Isn’t even a better skater than Geersten. The only summer addition I have a problem with. Like what the others bring but he is a waste of a roster spot and shouldn’t be in the NHL anymore IMO from what I’ve seen so far tonight and in preseason.
