I think we need to keep in mind that Blackwood spent significant chunks of his pre Covid career considered one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. He was approaching Shesterkin levels of hype in late 2019 and early 2020. That’s some time ago now, but I think that’s what the front office is hoping to capture again.
I don’t mind him being the nominal starter as long as Vanacek is getting close to 50% of the starts and they make him the #1 quickly if Blackwood falters. Which, sadly, I think will happen.
I don’t think Blackwood now is the same player as the guy that was dominating two and a half years ago.
I don't really remember Shesterkin levels of hype in 2019 or 2020. I don't know where that hype was coming from.
He was certainly a breath of fresh air over Kinkaid (who washing out of the league and did shortly after) in 18-19, as well as the declining, duct taped and crazy glued hip of Cory Schneider in both 18-19 and 19-20.
He certainly showed shades of being a good starting goalie for us, but I don't ever think he was getting anywhere near the hype of Shesterkin.
Actually, after his 2017-2018 AHL season, morale for him around here was possibly at an even lower low than it is even now. It was close, maybe not quite so much. My personal morale was not lower at that time for him than it is now. Then he unexpectedly came to the NHL, where he played much better than he ever did in the AHL and morale was way up. Not Shesterkin levels. I mean, there were absolutely fans of ours that thought he'd be better than Shesterkin at THAT time, if that's what you mean, but there was never a league wide hype over him.
And I certainly don't ever remember him being considered one of the best goaltenders in the NHL, outside of maybe some of our fanbase. Especially between his red hot end to 2020 and his red hot start to 2021 (like as in the first 5 games and he's been an .893% in the 55 regular season games since), but I can't remember anything more than that.
In fact, I remember a decent sect (if not a majority) of this place already having Cory penciled for the starter in 19-20 (Remember his SMOKE AND MIRRORS end to 2019? I certainly do and I remember everybody who made me feel stupid because of it, as well as people who remember me for now being a HATER of Cory Schneider, despite the fact that pre-decline I was one of his biggest fans here, even before we acquired him) and I said no way. We need to hope Blackwood is the starter this year if we want to be any good, because Cory's no count anymore. In fact, we should have done away with him this offseason.
Now Cory did play the season opener that year and got his fair share of starts in October (where he proceeded to BOMB in just about all of them, other than opening night where he left the game early due to cramping), but Cory also had a HOT preseason that year (Wasn't it like .950%? And I know he had a shutout in Columbus too) and Blackwood had possibly two of his WORST games of that season both in October, which kept Cory's leash a little less tighter.
