I'm not going to sit here and say Tatar is good or anything, but I think people here were a little too quick to write him off after last year. He's a 10 year vet that's scored nearly 200 goals and over 400 points in the NHL, I'll give Brunette the benefit of the doubt for now with regard to powerplay time.
He looked more determined this preseason but it's hard to know what to take from that. Beyond that I'd say he's not too dynamic anymore and he appeared somewhat pedestrian to me in terms of his skill last year when I focused on him. He does a bunch of stuff ok but he's small and didn't look to have much burst in skating. He spent too much time dipsy doodling on the perimeter and didn't generate enough that way. Just my eye test. Hopefully he keeps up what we saw in preseason.

I think we need to keep in mind that Blackwood spent significant chunks of his pre Covid career considered one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. He was approaching Shesterkin levels of hype in late 2019 and early 2020. That’s some time ago now, but I think that’s what the front office is hoping to capture again.

I don’t mind him being the nominal starter as long as Vanacek is getting close to 50% of the starts and they make him the #1 quickly if Blackwood falters. Which, sadly, I think will happen.

I don’t think Blackwood now is the same player as the guy that was dominating two and a half years ago.
I don't really remember Shesterkin levels of hype in 2019 or 2020. I don't know where that hype was coming from.

He was certainly a breath of fresh air over Kinkaid (who washing out of the league and did shortly after) in 18-19, as well as the declining, duct taped and crazy glued hip of Cory Schneider in both 18-19 and 19-20.

He certainly showed shades of being a good starting goalie for us, but I don't ever think he was getting anywhere near the hype of Shesterkin.

Actually, after his 2017-2018 AHL season, morale for him around here was possibly at an even lower low than it is even now. It was close, maybe not quite so much. My personal morale was not lower at that time for him than it is now. Then he unexpectedly came to the NHL, where he played much better than he ever did in the AHL and morale was way up. Not Shesterkin levels. I mean, there were absolutely fans of ours that thought he'd be better than Shesterkin at THAT time, if that's what you mean, but there was never a league wide hype over him.

And I certainly don't ever remember him being considered one of the best goaltenders in the NHL, outside of maybe some of our fanbase. Especially between his red hot end to 2020 and his red hot start to 2021 (like as in the first 5 games and he's been an .893% in the 55 regular season games since), but I can't remember anything more than that.

In fact, I remember a decent sect (if not a majority) of this place already having Cory penciled for the starter in 19-20 (Remember his SMOKE AND MIRRORS end to 2019? I certainly do and I remember everybody who made me feel stupid because of it, as well as people who remember me for now being a HATER of Cory Schneider, despite the fact that pre-decline I was one of his biggest fans here, even before we acquired him) and I said no way. We need to hope Blackwood is the starter this year if we want to be any good, because Cory's no count anymore. In fact, we should have done away with him this offseason.

Now Cory did play the season opener that year and got his fair share of starts in October (where he proceeded to BOMB in just about all of them, other than opening night where he left the game early due to cramping), but Cory also had a HOT preseason that year (Wasn't it like .950%? And I know he had a shutout in Columbus too) and Blackwood had possibly two of his WORST games of that season both in October, which kept Cory's leash a little less tighter.

Right, agree with you on all of that, but a lot of that stuff still plays with the man advantage is all I'm saying.

I haven't paid too much attention to what he did in Sunrise, but it seems like Brunette would rather have two balanced PP units instead of overloading on 1 based on what we've seen so far here. If that's the case, Tatar getting time there is the most likely avenue for him to contribute if he's playing.

That's fair. I'm just a bit skeptical of relying on preseason for anything but you do have to start somewhere. At least they have viable alternatives if Tatar isn't a good fit.

I don't think it ever got to Shesterkin levels but there was considerable talk about him being one of the three for the Olympics, one of the top up and coming stats, etc. Hopefully he can get back to close to that. I don't want to give him the benefit of the doubt but I'm willing to for this year.

Yeah there was some pretty considerable leaguewide hype even up until like a year ago

Look, to each their own but whether playing or in the team box he needs to show up in public dressed.

I'm not buying into Nico possibly playing on Saturday. Shortened practice the other day as a precaution, then a full practice and he's a no go for tonight. Nope. Not buying into him being available any time soon.

Any I idea of what radio station Or app I can listen to the game on? I downloaded the 104.5 app and there’s a Yankee game on tonight but I’d like to be able to listen to the Devils game any idea thanks

Thought I read Yankees postponed tonight due to weather.

My beef with Tatar is that he is too weak on the puck, loses board battles often ( if he engages) . Way too often we would get hemmed in our own end with him having opportunity to win a puck battle or get the puck out and he failed. It’s not due to lack of trying , he does try most times when he does engage but he simply is not good at some things . Reason #1 why he probably is scratched all the time during the playoffs on his past teams.
He is not defensively sound enough or do anything else when he isn’t scoring , and he doesn’t score enough ( for me) to overcome his short comings.

Yes, he was on the list for Canadian goalies for the olympics last year, He had only had the one poor season to that point and I remember thinking Canada's goalie depth was a bit weak (or old) relative to the past. And Carey Price was also hurt and they figured he wouldn't be available (and he wouldn't have been, he didn't make his season debut until April) and then you had an old Fleury, who may have even declined the invite.

I forgot who was on the list. I think Carter Hart was another name on the list. Kuemper had to have been. There was Jarry and he was fresh off the choke job playoff series where half the goals he allowed were bad.

Matt Murray was already 2 years deep into shit play by that point, despite his two cups and the ''Only goalie to ever win the cup twice as a rookie'' bullshit meme.

Excited for the start of NJD season 40. I do notice many of you laughing at Philthy and not taking this game seriously. Let's hope the NJD players don't do the same. They'll be hungry to prove they aren't the laughing stock of the league that many here think they will be. And Torts WILL have them ready to play, you better believe that. Torts doesn't allow any passengers or those not giving 100%, but he may make exceptions and allow guys to do that on Saturday when VAN comes to town. He won't tolerate such slacking against a division rival in the NJD.

Very excited to see Carter Hart and how MBW29 responds when going up against Carter Hart, a netminder that came up at the same exact time and that's been superior in every facet over the last two years, as well as in their respective careers. Also excited to watch Konecny, a very underrated player in the NHL. What an outstanding pick in the first round of the 2015 draft, just like the NYb and their pick that very same year. It must be nice not striking out and having to already sell off a disappointing first rounder like PZ.

This game will be a very tough test. I see so many of you laughing and taking this game as an easy and guaranteed 2 points. I see nothing funny here and this will be as tough of a 2 points for the NJD as we'll see all season long. Entering a building like Philly where it's always tough to play.

And just remember, Torts absolutely REFUSES to lose to the NJD.
Don't you disrespect Pavel, he's a PPG player so far this year

Let's go boys!!!

Since we're in Philly I have to give a shout out to Pointing Man. To this day no one knows who he is but he bravely wore our colors in an extremely hostile playoff environment and was captured here celebrating a goal on camera. What a legend.

The rain is holding off here, so I'll be taking a nice long lunch stroll around center city in my Hughes jersey.

If anyone is on the fence about making the trip down tonight, just do it. I want tonight to be as demoralizing as possible for these assholes.
And like that the Devils have been Mush'd!

gonna take a loss to the flyers for us to learn the Blackwood lesson (again), huh
I think we’re right at start of 19-20 expectations for the organization. Maybe not yet for Fitz, but blatantly for Ruff like Hynes that year.

If we really have a bad season (like below .500) Fitz will certainly be on the hot seat. Especially after his proclamation about how our time is now and why wait? We also have serious 19-20 vibes with highly questionable goaltending like we did that year. And we also have a head coach sitting on a much hotter seat than John Hynes was sitting on to open that year. Considering the Frankenstein life support project that Shero put Hynes on with sending Fitz down to the bench about 2 weeks into the season instead of just firing him then.

If that happens this year the only person being sent to the bench is maybe one of the assistants that isn’t on the bench to start this season or a new assistant brought in to replace Brunette’s vacant spot on the bench, when he moves to Lindy’s spot.

I don’t think they’re gonna f*** around this year.

Ruff can't afford to let Blackwood find his game (he was supposed to do that in the offseason) by gifting him starts or he's outta here quickly.

I know everyone just wants to pay for one way to watch TV like 15 years ago, but if you like sports at all it's tough to imagine not getting your money's worth out of ESPN+.
and for Verizon customers in the US just get the unlimited data package and you get Hulu/Disney/ESPN+ included. I switched last month from medium data plan and my bill went down $5 because I canceled the separate subscription and got a loyalty discount.
