Well... if we move Murray, (not bought out) we have $2.256 mil to sign Samsonov, which frankly isn't enough.

Though they really only need a few hundred thousand more after that. Potentially replacing Jarnkrok with a 1-1.5 million player could be enough.

Is a return to Nashville for Jarnkrok in the cards? Maybe BT could get a 4th for him. Still this only gains $1.3M in cap space at best being that he has to be replaced by at least a league minimum forward. He is workman like in the regular season and not frustratingly soft like Engvall as he doesn't resort to only reaching flybys. I wouldn't exactly call him a liability in the playoffs but definitely considerably less effective and we probably could score a better playoff performance from a league minimum player. But remember he's 15-20 goal scorer.

Here our options, essentially:

1) Trade Murray by parting with some sort of sweetener
2) Trade another large contract like, say, Nylander
3) Treliving already knows that Murrary is unfit to play, so they Robidas Island him and bank on LTIR and a couple of small roster movements to squeak by
4) Buyout Murray. Now, we passed on the initial buyout window, so the only way to do this is by unlocking the second buyout window by entering into salary arbitration with another player on the team. The only player eligible is Samsonov. Also, the team passed on the Club Elected arbitration window, so it would have to be Player Elected. So technically there is a non-zero chance that Treliving's plan is to refuse to negotiate in good faith with Samsonov and his agent and hope they choose to go to arbitration and actually go through with the hearing, so that they can buy out Samsonov's own goaltending partner 😬
wow...and here I thought that Leafs already f***ed Samsonov already every which way just from the way his available salary $$ leeway is drying up, with the Leafs wringing their hands and saying "there just isn't anything left!".

that is complicated. it's always gonna be tough to be a smaller fish in Toronto (or maybe just the last fish?), big fish have eaten everything in sight

Murray gone for picks.

Samsonov 4 millions per .

Nylander swap for Pesce... Boom, 2+ millions in cap left.
So no draft picks? No players with term worth trading away?

So how on earth does the team rebuild if they go through a calgary situation?

Isn’t the arbitration window July5-6 for team elected?

Aha! Yes!
That's the second window. I forgot there was a second Club Elected window. The first was within 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final.
The second is one business week after Free Agency - July 5-6.
Good catch!

So they need not depend on Samsonov choosing arbitration, necessarily, but they would still need to choose the arbitration route themselves to buyout Murray

I really hope we don’t move Nylander, he’s damn good, and still pretty young. One of our few consistent playoff performers. Get him locked up at $8.5-9 mil AAV long term.

Pay someone to take Murray, trade Timmins, use the ~$3.35 mil to sign Samsonov, and roll with a 20 man roster (12 F, 6D, 2G). Sign a bunch of serviceable depth guys for the Marlies, who can fill in when there are injuries. D will be a little questionable, but otherwise a strong roster, and if necessary we can make trades mid-season to improve the D.

I'm imagining this team we have now with Nylander on it and it's hands down the best forward group in the league. I wouldn't complain if we got a really good defenseman but I don't think there is any available that will be worth it in a trade. People have mentioned Pesce and I don't think that's a good idea.

It’s an interesting option to keep an eye on, good call highlighting it. There’s a bunch of conditions on the 2nd buyout window but triggering arbitration on Sammy having qualified him and then settling seems to meet them. Pridham level stuff.

Or maybe AM is leaving bc they can't agree on terms as he is asking for too much.

Jarny would be easy to move, but right now he's one of our only forwards capable of playing consistent, solid defence. And is capable of potting 15-20 goals himself.

Really all the Leafs have to do is somehow ditch Murray cleanly and get Samsonov for below $3 million, which if they play hardball they should be able to do. Skinner's new contract is paying him $2.3 million, no reason Samsonov should be making much more than that. Squeeze him to $2.5 million and we're golden.

Brodie and Liljegren will probably be moved... Jarnkrok would fetch a pick for sure...
Would be bad to move Robertson (low trade value right now/low cap/potential for breakout year if he gets opportunity and stays healthy...

Maybe Nylander wants out too .
Maybe he thinks he is the best of the core 4
Until Ryan O'Reilly owns up to the rhetoric and confirms or denies a problem I'm the room we have no idea
Everybody gives him the benefit of the doubt
Maybe he didn't fit toronto
Or maybe he wants to raise his family in the US

Obviously a trade is coming. Either Nylander, Tavares or Brodie.
If Nylander's deal is not done by now he’s all but gone. The term in dollars have been set by the market and if he demands too much above that, wish him well.

The sad thing this shows is how terrible Dubas screwed things. We have to move WN to survive and other than Knies, no one, NOT one player from Marlies or Jr. are ready to challenge for a spot.
We gave an aging 2nd line center at 11m who may now be a winger who should be paid 5m
We have a 2nd yr goalie (maybe), no second goalie signed, 1 overpaid goalie who gets hurt putting his pads on.
Could be a great year, but sure looks like 57 is coming!

The "plan" to offset the signings is likely a combination of a few guys getting moved out like Murray and Jarnkrok. Maybe someone like Timmins, ect, Gio retires or even a Brodie trade. Or they could get creative with a 20 man roster and see what happens over the first few weeks of the season.

A Nylander trade could potentially happen eventually if the extension negotiations aren't successful, but i doubt it's immediately the plan to move 40 goal guy to make room for 1 year of Domi.

It is indeed enough to sign samsonov, I believe the max he can make in arbitration is 2.135mish, or he takes his QO at 1.8m
Leafs have all the leverage by having Samsonovs RFA rights. Not sure what that number is exactly, but should not be an issue in getting Sammy on a 1 year qualifying deal, Those who want to trade Jarnkrok, want the Leafs to have the worst PKing team in the league. Acarii and Kerfoot were excellent PKers and both Domi and Bertuzzi are defintely not. Take out Jarnkrok and all you have is Marner/Kampf/Laff.
