It's funny to see some of the same people who refer to Dubas as Dumbass and bad-mouth all of his contract signings are the same people wishing Lou was here. If Lou was here, he would've run out one of Matthews/Marner/Willy out of town and replaced them with "character guys" like Matt f***ing Martin. And those character guys would be making high $$ while playing on a team with a system run by Babs that isn't suited for those types of players.

Yup Lou is winning in NY because he signed Matt f***ing Martin and ran Barzal, Lee, Baily, Eberle, Leddy, Pullock, Dobson etc. etc. etc. out of town.

Even more important is to assess the “floor” of each GM.

You know Lamoriello isn’t going to make an asinine move that destroys a franchise with a bunch of boat anchor contracts. His floor is very high.

Dubas likely has the lowest floor of any GM in the NHL. Aside from his complete lack of experience, he’s desperately trying to implement a system - - focusing exclusively on speed and skill while completely ignoring size, tenacity and toughness - - that has never before been successful in the history of the NHL.

That Islander roster managed to knock out the Bruins who we sadly could not, twice, once with a 3-2 lead and home ice in game 6. No reason why they are not successful in blue and white as long as Shanny and co. are not in charge.
The current Isles GM was at the helm of one of those teams that couldn't knock the Bruins out. I just don't think anything is so simple the way NHL hockey works. In the short sample size that is the playoffs, nobody knows what will happen until they have the benefit of hindsight, and good luck having that reflect in future results trying to replicate it. Similarly, would anybody be remotely surprised to see any of the Leafs' stars be key leaders on a cup run on another team? And surely that too would be spun as some fatal misstep.

I don't blame people for looking for a narrative, but I do think it's a mistake to assume there is a concrete answer that is a be-all, end-all to disappointment.

I think we need to get more comfortable with the idea that there is no easy solution even in theory.

I don’t know about that…….Lou’s current team is doing pretty good and has been the last 2 years

One thing about Lou too, he knew how to contain Babcock and work well with him / had similar vision. Another misfire by Shanny

Something is not right...I remember Shanny came out and talked about when he played in Detroit, the players took reasonable salaries in order to build a championship team...and then he let's Dubas sign Marner to that ugly contract...something is rotten there.

Did Lou run Barzal, Eberle, Lee, etc. out of the Island? Or did he help them advance to the Conference Finals two years in a row?

The problem is, Shanny said this publicly AFTER we signed Tavares on the open market for the 2nd highest cap hit in the NHL behind only McDavid. It's hard to sell your emerging young core on "taking reasonable salaries" when you literally just gave a very good, outside player (although one who never accomplished anything at the NHL level) the 2nd largest cap hit on the planet.

Interesting that you mention violins. Lou said in an interview I heard that you need different types of instruments to build an orchestra. So Lou is building an orchestra on the Island while Dubas built a string quartet that is fiddling while the Titanic is sinking.
Playing the violin while Rome burns, didn’t that already happen once before?

The same people that are waiting for the airlift coming are the ones who raved about Galchenyuk and what a great reclamation project he was. I was under impressed by him. He played on the top 2 lines for most of his tenure and didn't really score much. If they consider that a success where they get a guy who was thought to be totally useless and he is just somewhat useless...we are in trouble. The only guy that has worked out in the bargain bin shopping spree's is Spezza.
I’m lumping Bogo in with Spezza, but lets not kid ourselves, Spezza could have made more money elsewhere last year if he so chose, just like Bogo will get offered more than the Leafs can afford elsewhere next season.

Maybe that’s what’s needed to make the Leafs a contender, whatever Dubas is trying isn’t working, yet Lou just keeps winning.......

Would that really be a bad thing?

Remind me who’s in the final 4 again and who’s been eliminated in the first round 5 straight years?

Not only that -- Shanny chose Dubas (and ultimately Keefe) over Lou and Babcock. So he put the Leafs destiny in the hands of two children with no track record instead of two hockey men with Hall of Fame resumes filled with accomplishments. At this point, Shanny must double-down on Dubas because if he doesn't it's he who looks like the ultimate fool.

You just described 'Cognitive dissonance' to a T. He will double down just like Flat Earthers double down with excuses when they are shown proof that they are wrong. Believe it or not...I know a flat earther and they act the same way as Shanny and Dubas are acting now that their ideas are falling flat (sorry for the pun....I couldn't resist)

One thing about Lou is he is good at going to organizations where he knew a coach was coming, so he could be an awful GM which he has been with the Islanders, but it won't matter because an elite coach could cover up his bad moves.
Good decision by Shanny to cut ties at the right time.

Good post. The Lou cult is in full force though.
I could just imagine the responses if I referred to him as Lolaraillo, but I won't do that because I'm not childish like some of the Dubas critics.
