I thought I read somewhere that he would be playing on Saturday. How did that morph into December 18?

Because they spoke too soon.

Pittsburgh Penguins ‏@penguins
Coach Johnston on when Kris Letang should be back: "I’m looking at probably about 2 weeks.

We should have expected this when they were going on about how minor it is. But, hey, they've got 3 players on a 2 week injury timetable so they're being consistent.

Why are the Penguins such weasels about injury updates?

If you don't know anything, don't say anything. If you do know... don't lie.

I know it isn't that important for fans to know. But it just comes off as slimy.

Slimy? Why because there giving his groin more time to heal?

Did the team ever say he'd be back on Saturday? All I remember hearing is people in the media saying because he was just put on IR, the earliest possible date he could return would be Saturday.

No.

Because they consistently seem to jump into the breach with these platitudes about "minor injuries" before promptly putting the player on the shelf for weeks.

Like I said... if you don't know just say you don't know.

I think that was only the media. They speculated that he could be back Saturday and at that point the Pens were saying it was minor so people assumed it would only be a few games.

Missing 2 weeks with a groin problem isn't major either and for the Pens it probably is minor since it's not a stroke, cancer or a blood clot.

It's not like it'll hurt them to rest Letang anyway. He's never been an ironman in the first place. Give some of these younger guys a longer look to evaluate possible trade scenarios.

They are minor injuries and there giving them plenty of time to heal fully. There strains or slight pulls which can crop back up if you try to return to early and become even bigger problems. 2 weeks isn't a major thing.

Yeah. Luckily bodies on defense isn't a huge issue for this team.

Sucks. Letang was playing some great hockey. Oh well.

I definitely see where BWM is coming from.

Johnston tries to be transparent, but far too often "minor injury" has turned into multiple weeks.

He needs to find some middle ground between where he is now and Bylsma's obnoxiousness.

It's a minor, fan-ish complaint. But at least lie well, ya know?

One way or the other... at least it isn't "Day to day" -- for three months.

Yeah, they'll be fine and Letang isn't exactly durable so it's not a surprise. What I hope they do with this is use it as a chance to see some more of the young D. Dumoulin and Harrington should see some time and Bortuzzo should too once he's back, use it to assess what they have with these players and who that makes expendable.

They need to learn "We're still evaluating it at this time but it does not appear to be serious." If anything minor means it's not blatantly awful or it just means 2 weeks and under because I can't remember if minor has gone over 2 weeks.

Definitely at the point in the season where you can't even keep track of who is in and out of the lineup on a nightly basis if you have anything that resembles a life. :shakehead

They aren't any different than any other NHL team when it comes to giving out injury information. No team likes to fully disclose anything anymore.

The Stanton hit was gorgeous, just like the Bortuzzo hit. Both good, clean, hard hits.

Wonder if Stanton's gonna have to answer a call from the player safety dummies. I doubt it.
