Traded Vladimir Tarasenko (1 year, 5 million)

Unless Staios tells other teams, or Tarasenko outs himself which is a bad look any team trying to get that info could be dinged for collusion.
Then you'd have to punish the entire NHL because every team tampers. You think those contracts are all negotiated within 10 minutes of free agency?

It's not a good look to give away Tarasenko for scraps.

Let's other team's GMs know that Staios will compromise and settle for a bad return.

Doesn't bode well for a potential Chychrun return.

Tarasenko didn't sign a month after free agency with Ottawa because he wanted to be here lol. He signed because it was the best offer he could get after his agent fumbled free agency. He got a NTC and the ability to decide his future at the deadline if the team stunk.
Yes thats all true, but holding him hostage likely diminishes any possibility he comes back. By all accounts he probably likes this market more now than he did when he signed here.

The NHL is not the CIA. People talk.

If there's record of these conversations, could that be tampering?

What would constitute as tampering then, if not getting information about whether a player wants to or doesn't want to play for your team while they're in another organization.

Hunh?

Do you actually think with or without Taresenko Ottawa is beating that florida team over 7 games let alone making the playoffs. Their chances are less than .2 %.

I will take the assets over no assets any day.
Do I look like a guy that isn't sarcastic?

Things fall through all the time. Also, Florida wouldn't know you're lying if Vegas actually offered that.

I think GM's posture a lot more than you think. I would think a GM saying "I have a better offer" has been done 100s of times without actually having a better offer and they're never branded as liars.

It's a two-way street. Staios could have said, "I have a better offer," and Zito could have replied, "Oh, okay then, we'll move on, thanks."

What makes you think Florida had any interest in paying more for him, even if Staios hinted at other offers?

Again, the NHL is not the CIA. GM's, agents, players don't care enough about things like this.

If it was a team trying to talk to McDavid? Sure.

But Tarasenko? Nobody would care.

How does a team know whether there's only 1 team in the mix vs 3 in the mix without tampering? Did Tarasenko announce anything anywhere? Why would he purposely screw Ottawa's return by putting it out there that he only wants to go to Florida (I haven't seen this report published)
All he has to do is tell Staios he isnt going to waive anywhere else. I mean players talk, Bobrovsky and him are close from everything ive heard. And Frankly Florida is quite easily the best team in the league. He has won a cup and he has a young family. Its a direct flight from here to there in under 3 hours with 3 different airlines. So if his family wants to go back and forth its one of the easiest places to travel. Same time zone etc.

Do you think he cares about Ottawa's return on futures? Thats not screwing Ottawa thats using the leverage he negotiated.

I'm still glad they dealt him, bad return or not. I don't agree with the sentiment of just keeping him. I'm sure this was essentially promised to him from day 1, and I'd rather have a 3rd/4th than nothing with how badly this org bled picks to save $'s or make poor acquisitions. In general, we need to start going the opposite direction on that.

We got a bad return on a rental with an NMC. Dorion started by trading up for Logan Brown and then trading Zbad, likely in part because of drafting Brown. This isn't in the same realm as that.

In fairness, it was Florida negotiating against themselves. No other teams on his list.

Giroux also insisted on going to the Panthers with his NTC, yet the Flyers were able to get Tippett and a 1st from the Panthers.

Did they lose the negotiation to themselves? Or rather did the Flyers insist on a fair return and tell the Panthers they wouldn't trade him unless they got it?

I'm tired of excuses for objectively garbage trade returns. I've heard this crap for almost a decade now.

For the record, I don't think him picking only Florida is him screwing Ottawa. That's the right he had when he got his NMC.

What I said was the screwing was if he went around telling everyone he would only accept a trade with Florida. That does nothing for him but screws Ottawa.

The value of Giroux, at the time, was in a different stratosphere than Tarasenko's is today.

Even if he had no trade protection, the max I could see him going for is a 2nd. That's his upper ceiling value.

When he can control his destination? And his desired team has already traded away most of their picks? This is what you get.

People will say that he's better than Mantha. And maybe? But Mantha is bigger, younger, and more versatile. A playoff team could easily see him as a better fit. He can play both wings. If he doesn't work on your second line, he can easily fit on the third or fourth as a guy who forechecks and takes up space for 13 minutes a night.

Tarasenko? He needs a much more specific situation to be useful.

Anyone blaming dorion is out to lunch. This is not on him. Same scenario last year Kane. Better return.
People fine with mediocrity around here

Habs got paid a first to take on Monahan then got a first

They got a first for pylon Chiarot

Kane return last year

Not even asking for a first but that return is just straight up pathetic

Staois waiting patiently all season long, studying the team, gauging the market…finally making a move and it’s this lol

Tarasenko got a 1st and a prospect last deadline!

And apparently he only wanted to go to NY last year?

What's different this year?
